This is NOT criticising anyone or any 'body' and ALL of the guidelines were followed to the letter (so no one did anything even slightly wrong), just a friends observation

I hadn't really thought about it and of course to all of us it is NORMAL

A quote from a fellow medic, but non horsey person 'you horsey lot are bizzare'

We were covering a mounted games today and she can't believe that any of us never mind children not only 'do' get straight up after a fall, but are encouraged to do so by shouts from friends and family, even when they show signs of being hurt (no one proved to need more than an ice pack)

She said she expected the fallen rider to stay on the ground and all the other competitors to stop and stand still like they do in other sports when someone is injured, not to carry on the competition.

Each time it happened she was just more and more gobsmacked, bless her she went home a bit confused
As I said at the begining this is NOT a critisim and no one broke ANY rules

Fwiw I reckon its other sports that are weird, all that rolling round the floor & fuss. As for kids, even if I wasn't horsey I'd never be one of those mums that runs around screaming & acting like a freak just cos my child's grazed its knee. Fair enough if they're hurt but if a child falls anywhere I hate parents that make a song & dance about it, most kids carry on if you don't make a fuss.
And the main point is that us horsey people are well 'ard!

lol yep we are and it carries over into everyday life too, my poor kids have never been mollicoddled when they have fell over, it's always been 'oh dear never mind up we get':D funnily enough they never bothered screaming and yelling and acting lame for 3 days like some kids do;) and yep my kids get called lame as opposed to injured lol:D

when i hacked out alone once, i got bucked off and broke my finger. I got back on and rode back to the yard, mucked out etc and didnt even tell any one i had even hurt myself until i got home (mum sent me to A&E, spoil sport!)

With horses you just have to get on with it, after all the horse doesnt care if you've hurt yourself, lol.

You should have said " It's coz we are hardcore!" :D

When my daughter was 10 she broke her arm in a riding lesson, she sat out on a block for 5 mins, but as she had gone a bit grey we didnt get her back on, anyhow the lesson was nearly over. We cleared up, turned the horses out and went home for tea. However, it was still hurting 'a bit' so took her up to A&E. The doctor was quite asounded when he came back with her xray showing her humerus snapped in two - Hard as nails

Magicmillbrook, you sound a nice mum, when I broke my humerus and my collar bone, my mum sent me to have a hot bath and didn't take me to the hodpitsl until over 24 hours had elapsed.

I had a bad-ish fall on friday, I don't remember what happened but I've had a nasty headache ever since. Not only did I get straight back up, but I got back on and jumped the rest of the jumps I intended to and even asked for them to go higher! Only after pestering from mum and brother, did I go to A+E to find out I have slight concussion.

The amount of non horsey people that make it out that every fall is a bad one is incredible! One customer who over heard that I'd fallen kept saying how miserable I must be and how brave I was for coming to work :P haha!

When I broke my hand (falling over in the stable!), I finished rugging up, put the bed down and tidied the banks, swept up, emptied the skip bucket and put it way, then went into the office as said "I think I have hurt my hand". The girl that did St John's ambulance asked if I could wiggle my fingers - I could, so she said it's probably just sprained.

By the time I got home it was swollen and immovable, so went to A&E - I was x-rayed and in plaster within 40 mins. Rang the SJA-er and told her it was broken - she laughed!!

However, one of the girls took a fall on Friday - got up and tried to get back on, but couldn't. Turned out she's fractured two vertebrae - so not always a good idea to get up straignt away!

ouch and yep not always a good idea, the adrenalin is going especially in competitions and you can do all sorts of damage.

When I fractured my tib and fib it didn't hurt for around 10 mins, if it hadn't been facing the wrong way I would have got up and got back on too :D

When I broke my scaphoid, I got straight back on (pony was being an idiot cantering on spot and rearing) continued the hours hack, went back, mucked out two, made feeds, rugged up, cycled 4 miles home AND went to college the next day.

Did pretty much the same as above but with broken ribs except I was jumping

When Ted knocked me out and I had a bleed on the brain, I cycled home and attempted to get to college the next day, Only *just* got there

I broke my foot when a horse refused a fence then bolted (I bailed and horse stood on my foot), persuaded my RI I was fine, hobbled across to said horse, jumped back on and carried on jumping.

I got bucked off another horse a day before my stage 1 exam. I broke my middle finger (and dislocated the DIP joint) and he stood on the inside of my thigh and I had a whopper of a bruise. I still managed to pass my S1 the day after (riding and care) and I had to ride said horse.

I've had loads of falls which I reckon potentially shouldnt have not gone to A&E afterwards (I fell off over a 3ft jump from a gallop, landed on my neck and upper back and although I got back up and carried on jumping, I was in agony, and couldn't walk from the day after for a couple of weeks for example!)...

I had bad fall yesterday, got back on with a banging headache, (little shite aint gettin the better of me) for it to happen again 15 mins later (landed on my feet 2nd time :) ) Figure if head still bad 2moz i'll go to A&E in work time :D Then as my friend reminded me, back of my hoody says 'I do my own stunts' !!!!

Clearly all mental, yes! :D when I fell off learning to jump, my instructor threatened to shove her stick up my a**e if I didn't get straight back on! I did, as soon as I spat out the sand!

A friend of mine fell off while out hacking and broke her pelvis. She GOT BACK ON :eek: and rode the couple of miles back to the yard! She said she could feel the two halves grating together as horsey moved!

I walked around on a broken leg for 9 weeks after a fall (although I did think it ached a bit!) :D

Try the para equestrian scene. Mad!
I have (among other things that make me feel like I'm falling apart most days ) a condition that means any strain and my joints dislocate partially or fully.
We were doing a gymkhana game that involved jumping off and running along stepping stones then remounting. When I got of I dislocated my hip, knee, ankle and big toe (the toe was the most painful!) ran along the stones, remounted and finished the game - 2nd, not bad! Got my mum to 'pop' me back in as best as she could then continued the day, ending up reserve champion for my age bracket

When Dizz slipped on the road I cracked my forearm, but didn't know. Got back on with the Liam of a mounting block and finished rude to new yard, though D had to help me off lol

Broke my back and didn't know. Got back on the Dizz. She was a bit stressed and we did backwards for a bit, but at least I didn't jump

Only time I didn't get back on was the bleed on the brain, and was was either because Friend had me pinned down (I wanted to get to the Dizz), and because I felt so incredibly sick

When daughters have come off its always been a "You ok? Good, get back on then" :D. Did take D2 to A&E when LL dumped her then stood on her in passing...

The only time I was unable to get back up I was still attached to the rusty 8 inch nail and therefore the 12 foot rail I had just stood on whilst removing old post and rail.
Once removed I was fine and really didnt see the need to be admitted for the celulitus I developed a couple of days later.....graphic descriptions from the doctor on what could happen changed my mind for me and I reluctantly agreed to be held hostage for 4 days :D

I'd have lived to see your friends face.
I fell off and broke my leg a couple of years ago. Was three stubble ields from home so climbed back on using a big bale to help and rode back to the yard. I then turned my horse out and drove myself to A&E. Unfortunately they then didn't believe it was broken so discharged it as soft tissue. Diagnosed a week later by X-ray from my GP, absolute agony by this point.
It was the top of the fib which is quite unusual.

Tony McCoy just proves how tough horsey people are - he rode with a broken back for 6 weeks without even realising!

Mind you - I'm not as tough as you lot, I've never broken a bone and although as much as anything hurts it doesn't bother me but if I hit my face I will blub my eyes out for hours! No idea why! Lol I'm a wuss!!

Thoroughbred reared and fell on me when I was riding him, and broke my ankle and ribs. I didn't know this ofcourse, untill 9 hours later AFTER I'd sorted him out, tutted at him for being a wuss and turned him out, drove home, went shopping, went to the pictures, had a shower and dolled myself up, and walked about at a car meet... driving everywhere.

Wasn't until friend confiscated my keys and took me to the hospital did I realise I was broken. I thought I had just sprained my ankle, even though I was dragging it along behind me!

I suppose your friend is right! We are an odd bunch. I used to fall off every week as a child and always got straight back on. I was normally riding in an arena so softish surface, which helps!

However I have got a crooked collarbone with a real kink in it so I reckon that I did probably break it at some point ...

When my kids fall off I just check they can stand up and smile, and they are straight back on too. (They wear body protectors admittedly).
