I have an 8 month old Jack Russell puppy who is brilliant in every way except he just can't get the hang of toilet training.

When we are not at home (and overnight) he goes in his crate and there are no accidents. As soon as he is let out of crate I take him straight outside.

When we are home he is allowed out and 'supervised' in the house. Ever since we got him home we have taken him outside as soon as he starts to circle, sniff, squat etc and he does go toilet outside, but he still trys to go inside.

It is though he does not understand inside from outside...but i'm not sure why ? How do you train them to ask to go out?

I'm not sure what I have done wrong as I thought by the age of 8 months he should of got the hang of it by now?!! Help!!

Now I don't know much about JR's but I think they are quite an intelligent breed.

You said that as soon as he starts circling/sniffing in the house you take him outside. Becouse of this he has probably learned that this is the way that he needs to tell you that he has to 'go'.

Personally to try and break this habit I would take him outside every hour and say 'we we' or poo poo. Then give a titbit and lots of praise as a reward only if he does 'go'.

Then if he tries to go inside give him a firm NO (say his name first to grab his attention) and take him outside and give him a treat and praise only if he 'goes' out side.

Not sure if thats much help??? but I am sure someone more experienced will be along shortly

Exactly what Herbie says. Also, is it all toilets he does inside or just wee - he could marking his territory, in which case you definately need to make sure you clear up all the urine, or he'll mark again in the same place (something like Simple Solutions is quite good). Never clean with bleech as the smell of amonia will just encourage them more.

Yes it is all toilets!

I have also been doing what Herbie said and only rewarding him when he goes outside. He knows the 'go pee' command very well as soon as i say it (outside only obviously!) he will squat down & do his business!

Oh dear. He might just be "going through a stage". These things sometimes take time, although JR's are usually very good.

Unfortunately for us, we have Iggies - and they are not reknowned for being easily toilet trained - so we often have accidents. Ours clearly know right from wrong, but when its cold and raining they will do anything to avoid stepping outside !!

You can train dogs with a bell. Place a bell (like a sleigh bell) by the backdoor and everytime you take them out and give them their toilet command (ours is "go busy busy" !!), ring the bell, then start taking the dogs paw to ring the bell as you open the door. Theory is they will soon link ringing the bell with going outside. Just make sure you don't ring the bell when you are just going out normally, otherwise he might ring the bell everytime he wants to go and play outside.

Hopefully Cayla will abe along shortly (if not then might be worth pm'ing her - I'm sure she won't mind) she gave me some excellent advice the other day about my BC.

One of my dogs were like that, all of my dogs got the hang of using the garden really quick (about 1-2 months, but im with mine almost 24/7) except one of my bitches it took her about a year to get the hang of it. I used to get up real early let her out when she went she would get a treat and then whenever i saw she needed to go and at the same time tell her 'go wee'. sometimes i think it takes longer for some, i used to think she was just lazy, but shes got it now, she refuses to go out in the rain so i have to carry her put on a wetsuit and stand with her whilst she goes lol. Good luck, let us know how you get on :-)
