Yesterday I lost my best friend. Lost is a silly word because I know where he is, mum has told me, and I know he’s not coming back.

So I raise a hoof and a glass to you Bertie, I’ll miss you.
I’ll miss you;
Because you were always grumpy in the morning and made me laugh biting people when they weren’t looking
Because you had the biggest yawn in the world.
Because you helped me pull our rugs down to make our mums mad.
Because you shared your hay and stole mine.
Because you always wanted to beat me to the field but called to me as I walked down the lane.
Because no matter how long after you I got there, you always waited for me by the gate.
Because we’d stand together at the drinking trough, shoulder to shoulder and dribble water down our chins.
Because you’d run with me to the gate when my mum came to fetch me
Because if she wasn’t bringing you in as well, you’d hang on to my tail and not let go.
Because even when you were in pain you’d play with me for hours.
Because you were calmer if I stood with you when you were down in the field and couldn’t get up.

But most of all I’ll miss you because you were my best friend and the field is empty without you.

RIP big grey man.
When my time one day comes, wait for me at the gate.

RIP Bertie. Thats is so fantasticly done.

What a lovely tribute. Ive just had to pretend Ive had a sneezing fit in the office hence my eyes watering. I havent read any linked posts yet, but send deepest sympathies. He was obviously much loved by all x

To clarify Bertie wasn't mine.
He had been suffering with intermittant lameness for over a year, had an operation on his stifle on tuesday which found nothing to explain his chronic lameness. On vets advice he was pts yesterday afternoon.

He was stabled next to hovis and was his inseperable best friend. It was heart wrenching standing next to an empty stable this morning and standing watching my boy look lost without Bert this morning.

I know i gave Hovis and Omar extra hugs this morning.

I am in a bucket here at my desk!
That was lovely Hovis & I'm sure he thought you were the very bestest sort of best friend.
RIP Big Grey Man
Hugs to Hovis xxx

What a beautiful tribute, brought tears to my eyes in the office, Hovis he will wait im sure.

Hugs to all involved

I dont usually get tearful but that made a massive lump in my throat. The thought of the two boys standing by the water through dribbling water down their chins - ahhhhhhhhh

sniff sniff and a smile because it was also lovely, funny and well written x
