Hi

I've just bought a colt. He's about 15 months old and he stands at 10.1 hands (I thought he was bigger than this). He's a riding type pony and in his passport it says he will mature to be about 12.2 however the vet has said he will more along the lines of 14.2.

What do you think?

depends what breeding he is and how big his parents are but i shouldn't think he would grow more than 13hh? They uaually grow another 2 hands after they are 1 as a general rule. he might surprise you though :P

I would say about 12.2hh, my two year old was much bigger then that at 15months and she should make about 15hh.

Certainly not 14.2! My cob was 13.2 at 15months and is to make 15hh. So at 10.1 he'll be lucky to make 13hh, prob more like the 12.2 expected.

Try the following method, it's not 100% accurate but works as a guide on anything over six months old:

Take a soft cloth measuring tape (like the kind used for sewing) and measure from the middle of the knee to the coronet band. However many inches, is how tall in hands the horse will grow. Each 1/4 of an inch is equal to .1 hand.

So if you get 14 3/4 inches, the horse will be about 14.3

15 1/2 inches, the horse will grow about 15.2

16 1/4 inches, the horse will be about 16.1

Try it on fully grown horses too - works on about 80% of them - prepare to be amazed, i was!!!

is 10.1 about the size of a shetland? because I would say he's bigger than a shetland as he currently stands. at the moment I'm having to measure him against me and then measure me for his measurement as he's very nervous!

10.1hh is the size of a large Shetland, their maximum height is 42 inches (10.2hh). If he is to make 14.2hh like your vet said, he should standing around 12.2hh now.

i've managed to measure him more accurately and he's about 11.2 I knew he was bigger than a shetland, he has quite a big head and long legs.
