I got a bit about a week ago, was second hand. Anyway, it was normal when I received it, obviously washed it etc. before using it on my boy. I used it and then rinced it off (like I do everytime I ride) and hung it up in the tackroom, like all my other bits.

Went up the next morning and it STUNK. I could smell it from a foot away, it has a really really strong odeur. I can't explain what it smells like apart from sh ! t ?

Brought it back, scrubbed it with fairy liquid, rinced it off and dried it, it still stunk afterwards and even my hands smell very strong when I have touched it to wash it.

Ran a big boiling bowl of water and washing up liquid and left it over night, but it STILL stunk in the morning.

Have just let it soak in disinfectant and boiling watern rinced it off and hung it out in the fresh air to properly dry but it is still smelly.

It is actually making me feel sick and there is no way I'm putting this awful smelling bit in mr neds mouth. I can't think of what it could be. Like I said it was a used bit, but it didn't smell like this when I got it, it was only after I used it once and rinced it off.

This is driving me crazy as I have only used it once and it is in new condition and the horse goes lovely in it but I just cannot bear to go near it !

The spelling in this will be very bad so please excuse but

try the tablets you used to sterlize (sp) babies bottle think they are called or made by Milton

We use them on feed bowls brings them up lovely

Also if you can use on baby bottles sure they wont do horses any harm

is it normal stainless steel or the aurigan type metal?
Other than dishwasher or the sterilisation stuff, you could try scrubbing with toothpaste.

Do you know what brand bit it is, i.e. neue schule or shires or sprenger?

Roody2 - Have no Idea sorry, got it off the internet.

I think it's just a normal stainless steel one, the metal looks the same as all the rest.

Could try scrubbing it with toothpaste.. I don't want anything toxic to ned though

Personally I wouldn't consider using a bit I bought off the internet of an unknown make and unknown metal - especially if it smelt bad!!

Especially after watching this..... http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=475809

There are a couple of sellers I'd use off ebay (and have used) to buy bits off, but apart from that I'm very wary. IMO you'd be better to ditch it and get another.....

you could try soaking it in a strong solution of denture cleaning tablets (like 2 in just enough water to cover the bit.

And Metal will pick up smells if it's exposed to them for long enough (or from strong enough odours). I play brass instruments, and they can soon get smelly if you've got dental problems, or if you just don't clean them often enough. And, the company I work for produce food flavours - if the metal work is not properly cleaned after each product then the metal will pass on taint to the next product, which is partly from residue and partly from the strength of smell that is left on the metal.

That is really weird considering you said it was fine at first, kind of suggests the metal is kind of dodgy and perhaps not made out what it says it is.
But still totally weird nether the less, sounds rather off I would ditch it personally.

Thanks for the replies. Like I said I have no idea what kind of metal it is made of and it didn't smell like this when I got it.

It looks brand new though and was advertised as nearly new. I'll see if the smell goes, although after reading some of the replies, makes me want to ditch it. Shame I wasted 15euros...

Is this bit suppose to be stainless steel? my other half just said put the tip of your tonge on it and if you get a funny taste its not stainless steel ....... I just said to him 'thats if she wants to lick the dam thing' lol lol lol lol xxx

½bucket Boiling water, A real big squirt of Domestos and soak it well for several days. My bits all come up beautifully when I do this, I then rinse well in very hot water and dry with soft cloth.

Just left it over night again with boiling water (from the kettle this time) and a big capful of disinfectant.

Went down this morning and pulled it out of the bucket and dried it off. Doesn't seem to smell SO bad anymore but I have put it out in the fresh air. When drying it off I noticed green gungy stuff (Like mashed grass) coming out of the tiny holes in the loose ring part of the bit, So I held it under the hot tap hoping the water would flush anything out.

Hopefully this is the end of the nasty smell ! :) I asked what others thought the wash and they said bad breath and told me to get some listerine for ned. LOL I'm glad they were only joking :)

It really sounds like it is a hollow mouth gag and some grass and saliva has got inside. I would therefore seriously question the strength of the bit and not be using it!!!

Is it one of those ones with a hollow mouth piece if it is I would have a very carful look to see it there are any tiny cracks or holes in the mouth piece if there are salvia etc could be trapped in there making the smell if so ditch it.
