How desirable are white socks on a welshie?

Desirable I think.....From what I have seen in the inhand classes, the most successful cobs seem to have white socks. It shouldn't make any difference at all but I have seen some badly put together yet flashy cobs with white stockings get placed above some lovely examples of the breed that have plain legs!! I suppose the white really helps them stand out.
On a personal level I adore a dark bay welshie (or liver chestnut) with 4 even whites socks - to mid cannon and a nice white blaze, quite how I ended up with my chestnut I don't know!!

Oh dear my boy has 3 white socks two below knee on front and one above hock on hind, and has loooots of white on his face:o:D
I never really even considered his socks when viewing 0 1 2 3 or 4 i would still love him all the same

I personally only like them if they have four or none at all what do you think judges prefer?

i personally don't like them if they have one or three socks i think it detracts from there action and if they have two front/back it makes them look uneven - legs longer/shorter

Any opinions

Mine has 2 whites behind - but he certainly doesn't look uneven, or like his legs are longer?? Mind you I dressage him rather than show and he gets 8's and 9's for his paces so can't look that bad!!

My girl has one white ankle sock on her near fore and.....well.....not sure what you would call her face marking, but she's pretty desirable to me :)

As a 2yr old.....shes somewhat 'larger' now ;)

Generally, if it's morbidly obese, knees itself in the teeth when trotting, and is nuts, it will do well in the show ring. Lots of flashy white and a pretty colour is a bonus!

All of these things certainly seem to be more important than good conformation and a straight action! In a ridden class, behaviour and way of going under saddle are nearly irrelevant.

I've given up bothering to show my non-fat and nicely put together D even at local level, because I can't stand the judging!

Lauraandjack - i know what you mean! I bought my lad to show, but given he has a lovely free, low action i have kept him out of the show ring tbh until he is at least backed. I think he will do slightly better undersaddle but we're not fussed, as long as he does fun things!

My pet hate is welshies with no backs and hackney trots. why would you want to sit on an animal who would give you permanant back problems!?

My lad at 2 (he's now 5)

This is my 3 yr old Parc Roberto.
Never going to be an in-hand show cob but thats not why I bought him and tbh thats the last thing I would want to do with him once I start backing him. Only 1 white sock and a very distinctive star. I think he's true to type which is more important to me.

joking about welsh relative aside lol;) i think some of the breeders think 4 whites is desirable but I'm not sure the judges think so, the stud where i got my welsh B from has produced some champions who have odd number whites and shock horrer one little winner had a white face:eek:

I am right behind you on this one !!

What like this one? Mine in her first season, not fat, minimal knee action, lovely manners and lots of victories under saddle. You might find the judging generally better at affiliated rather than unaffiliated TBH.

I so agree with you on this!!! That's why I stick to dressage!!!

Both his eyes look like this

And his big white face looks like this:

Apparently, this is the Sabino gene pattern..white touching the eyes, blue eyes, belly splashes..very common in Welsh bloodlines...I'm told this would go against him in the ring, but as I have no intention of showing him, couldn't care less. I think he's stunning.

And here is my bigger boy with his tiny back two white ankle socks..same white markings as his famous gt gt grand sire, Nebo Black Magic:

Presumably this would make him more show-able than my other boy, but again, its really such a subjective world...nothing against anyone who wants to show but it all seems a bit nuts to me...FWIW, I was talking recently with a very well-renowned former Sec D breeder and now RW judge...he thought my boys were splendid but did say most judges would mark down the blue eyes, despite him having great confo, presence and hock action (his words)..he did agree that this was pretty mad, but the reality of how people judge..

It annoys me so much when threads like this descend into 'showing bashing' threads.

I'm going to say something now which I have no doubt will make me very unpopular but it needs to be said!!! The average person who keeps horses nowadays knows VERY LITTLE about conformation (most can't even spell it!!!).

I see posts complaining about how badly someone has been judged at a show and I look at their horse to quite often find it is just a bad example of it's type. It may be lovely natured or a super jumper or hack but just not a show animal.

I was stewarding at the weekend at a show with RIHS qualifiers and the rings were full of lovely animals but there were one or two that fell short of that standard. The judge said to me - and I quote - "why can people not see what they have got?" It seems that some people are just blind to their own animal's faults.

I'm not going to pretend that showing is never facey and that obese animals never win because sometimes it DOES happen. We show and generally do well BUT we know the limits of the animals in question, we don't look at them through rose coloured spectacles and if we are not at the top of the line we have more often than not been beaten by a better animal on the day and not 'done over' by a facey or ignorant judge!

Can I just say that for me if I passed your first boy in the field he wouldn't scream out to me he is Welsh whereas there's no mistaking what your bigger boy is. THAT is hugely important in showing. Both lovely BTW just one very more 'Welsh' than the other :)

4 whites & a blaze for me, nothing nicer than seeing a pony with 4 whites trotting out.
Obviously type & conformation important too :)
Costs a fortune in chalk powder during the season though lol

Hmm..interesting, thanks..have no intention of showing either of them, as I said..but really have no axe to grind with anyone who does show..first boy is a gangly 2yo in that photo..with much growing to do..second boy was a 6 yo stallion in his pic..so obviously much more 'grown' and they are half-brothers with the same sire..but I love 'em both for what they are anyway warts an' all! ;)

Sorry I can't quote on the old mobile.. I do agree with minesadouble there are some good judges out there and I think it depends on the experience you have had...

I do now feel slightly worried about taking my ponies into the show ring incase I get comments behind my back about my ponies. I show for fun its not the end of the day of I have no rosettes perhaps other people are the same and realise the faults but enjoy the atmosphere and the show :/

4 White socks is more important to Welsh lovers than conformation IMO.

White socks are a must, but white on the face is a no no.

Well that's bombed our boy out... :D A straight bay with a star... Although he's getting 'blonder' between the legs, under belly and chest so maybe he'll grow a sock or four... :)

For myself... I seem to have an abundance of pink socks... :D

My old mare who's Nebo/Derwen lines did well when she was younger, she did start to dish slightly on her off fore randomly so after that she was never placed as well as before but she did get placed wuite a bit,her last class i took her to aged 11 she came 4th out of 20 odd m&m large breed.
I don't agree that white faces arn't liked,my mares relatives have done very very well and they all had a blaze like her.

Havn't got many pics of her on my laptop but here are a few.

Ha ha...he's so laid back I doubt he'd care... The Mr would be highly unimpressed...

Baby Sec D is in the good books tonight though after behaving perfectly for his first proper trim... Lifted on command, held up for as long as necessary and didn't try to sit on/eat the farrier... Sorry, random proud mum wafflings... :o

Tbh my chestnut section D is regularly down the line and he has 4 even whites, and not a lot of White on his face, but then again, he's kept fit enough for HDT and is unsettled in big classes so I've never felt like we should be higher... Instead I've just dropped him out of county level and accepted that a working fit pony (lean and well muscled) will never be placed as high as he should.

This little fellow is so cute but I would never buy him because i know that one black foot would bug me forever - i am a bit OCD.
http://www.dragondriving.co.uk/horseforsale-33495.html

He's owned by a friend of mine! i really like him, but I'd love to whip all his socks off!

Funny how the abundance of white is because (AFAIK) Welshies are the only native allowed a lot of white, so I guess breeders like to indulge to make them 'stand out'. Nothing to me that stands out in a ring full of blacks, bays and chestnuts with four white socks and big blazes, than a nice dark bay with no white!

My gelding has a small star, a snip and a small sock on his near hind. I'd remove the sock if I could. Personally I don't like lots of white. I can accept it on the legs but I can't stand big white faces :o

The D champion at the RW last year only had two hind whites (not very big ones at that) and very little white (possibly no) on her face. She is a beautiful mare! https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.ne...0250344357327_633522326_8100565_7395891_n.jpg (my photo but won't post because of my watermark :p)
