Re-book as soon as horse done.
Book when horse due.
How much Notice does you farrier need

I feel I'm very lucky as when I need farrier I ring the week before and always get the next Thursday..regardless of it being 1 needs doing or all three..

I re-book when he's here, I wouldn't dream of leaving it until I actually needed him on a regular basis, anyway, he couldn't do it, he has certain areas he does on certain days.
The one time I've had to call with a "come when you are passing and have half an hour spare the new horse is in a shocking state" call he was here within 3 hours. I was lucky that day, he called in on the way home, I LOVE MY FARRIER:)

Same as Martlin, unless there is an emergency, then ring and farrier would come out as soon as he was able. (by emergency I mean lame horse, would also come out for a lost shoe, but not as quickly) :)

We're on a big yard, the farrier comes in every Monday so he gets put on the list for the Monday when he's due done.

when he is with me, I pay (!!) and re-book next visit. hopefully to coincide with either school hols or after school - that's another challenge; how do others cope with farrier/vet when it's difficult to get time out of work? !

I also pay and re book for next time when he finishes off. This way I can book the early morning slot - 7am, and can get to work as soon as poss after, which usually just means being a bit late. He is ALWAYS on time!

I wouldn't dream of booking when they need doing, tbh its not exactly a surprise is it? I take my cue from my excellent farrier - such as 'they will need to be done in 6/7/8 weeks time' depending on hoof growth etc.

He will come out as soon as he can in an emergency and always calls me back ot texts. I give him coffee and biscuits and feel that I have a really good reltionship with him. I am fairly sure most farriers would be harder to get hold of/take longer to come out/be late etc if you mess them about.

I always wonder this! I work Monday - Friday 9-5 and find it sooooo difficult arranging farriers/vets/dentists/saddlers etc etc
My horse has recently has some issues so she been getting vet treatment for her mouth and at the same time saddle/back checked. A full MOT basically.

I have no choice but to take holidays from work. I now only have 3 spare days from now till xmas!!!!

You'd think some people would do a Saturday or evening for you?
Also, I seem to be the only person I know who is restricted like this!

What do you guys do?

My farrier is happy to shoe my horse without me being there. I am equally happy for him to carry on - he's an excellent farrier, and I trust him implicitly.

If my farrier gets to the yard before me he will take the horses out and start without me. I trust him and am sure if needed he would do it all without me there but I wouldn't expect him to do this every time.

Flexi time. Great stuff.

Can you not work later/start early/work through lunch?

I book the next appt. with my farrier at each visit.

Very lucky that I'm only a few miles from where he lives so he usually does me last thing - horses kept at home so no bother to me if he turns up at 6 p.m. or 8 p.m.

I keep them at home and he only re-shoes one - I book the next appointment while he is at the premise as soon as he has finished doing them.

I always re-book as soon as he has done my three, I like the first appointment (8.15am) means I don't have to have alot of time off work. He's also really good if I need him urgent, he came out one Saturday for me and he doesn't normally work them, did it as a special, also has come out in the evening when I had a problem with one of mine, he is a really nice chap.....:D

My farrier shoes most of the horses at my yard (30ish ponies) so I text him a week or so beforehand so can fit them in with any others that need doing.

One of mine is at a big compeition centre where the farrier comes every monday and spends all morning doing whatever we tie up next to his van, no need to book in.

I have my next four appointments booked already! My farrier's wife deals with his diary, and I email her to arrange appointments. I do have a specific shoeing need coming up at the end of the summer, hence working out the appointments so far in advance. Usually, I just book the next appointment a day or so after the horses have been shod.

I book mine back in when he as finished doing the shoes, if I need trims for my others I just ring and book him it,s usually a week to ten days wait. If its an emergency he will come usually that day or the next if it can wait that long.

I send a text to my farrier a week before I need him but without fail he will usually come within a couple of days, so I usually leave it quite late as otherwise I would be shoeing every 4 weeks soon enough. He seems to work every day of the week, I love my farrier and how easy he is.

I always book before the Farrier leaves. The majority of farriers prefer this, as they then know what is coming on any given day, with the exception of any emergencies that may arise.

Am I the only one who rings up when I need him?

I can ring him on the Monday and he will come out on the Thursday. As we all use the same farrier we then let the others know he's been booked and when he's coming and if needed they add their horse to the list. As long as there is someone to hold the horse he doesn't mind if the owner isn't there/ can't get out of work

Our whole yard (full/part livery) gets done over 2 days by 1 farrier. (well apart from one horse) There is always someone there (I think?!) and they are all done every 6 weeks. We are free to use our own farrier and yard will supervise, but we all use this one as he is so good. Pretty sure they are booked in for next time on the day of the previous shoeing.

Nooo I ring when I need him...But he is always in my area on a thursday so best to ring as soon as I know I need a visit :D

Usually I either book the week my mare is due or my YO tells me when the farrier is coming as they shoe quite a few on the yard and all the YOs. But tuesday I got a remedial farrier to treat her and booked in for the next time while I wrote him a cheque. Usually I cant be there for the other farrier as he normally comes weekday mornings but this remedial farrier booked me in for last call on a weekday so I just need to leave work an hour early.

I re-book and pay when he has finished. We have the same appointment once every 6 weeks. This fits in well with my shifts at work. If I cant be there then I have friends who could be there for me. I would never dream of phoning when I need him, I always like to know in advance that the appointment is booked and in both of diaries.

he comes to my yard every friday, so as long as i write it in the book before thursday night (or ring him begging before he gets there..) then he'll do it! :D

I have found another wonderful farrier - how lucky am I thats 2 in a row now!!
I appreciate how busy my farrier is and tend to either leave a message or send a txt message the week before mine need sorting.
When new horse arrived he was loosing his shoes due to bad feet and my wonderful farrier was always here within 24 hours and the best in a hour and a half!
If you have a food farrier do everything you can to keep hold of them.
Good reliable farriers are few and far between.

Mine actually prefers to not book in advance and asks me to give him a ring when I think they are getting close, as of course growth varies quite a bit between the seasons.

If I call or text him he is there within the week, and within 24 hours for emergencies.
