how do you plait?

curious really...
i plait with bands as they are easier, but only a big big shows do i sew... so what do you do? do you plait at all? or are you a showjumper

When I had a horse, I mostly did bands, as I found them a lot easier than thread! Did thread for a few big shows though.

*sharp intake of breath*... young lady - I am surprised she even lets you near her horse

. I am faster with bands, but thread gives you so much more flexibility in terms of what you can do with the mane to compliment the neck. Also doesn't pop out the minute your horse shakes its head, and means you don't have to pull it so often either.

Thread. I find it FAR easier, FAR quicker and they don't come out though taking them out is trickier! Used to use bands as simply didnt know how to use thread but now i know how its SO much better.

I tried with thread and I made a mess. Yeah, they were much tighter and didn't come out but they looked ghastly!

I got told off for how bad they were and had a quick lesson in how to use bands! I do a better job now with bands.

I dont ! I have a welsh D so I leave it au naturel - although I do pull it so it looks tidy. However I am also the type of person who doesn't ride when it rains and doesn't groom much as it strips the natural oils from the coat

bands mostly sewing for special occasions and on the continent we always plait the showjumpers for international classes.

If for some reason I am going showing (doesnt happen very often

) I sew, otherwise I use bands as J hates being plaited for some reason and refuses to keep still, and if I sew them in I am in danger of stabbing him with the needle.

I plait with bands for dressage and low level showing but use thread for county shows etc.

I can normally do a nicer job with bands and when I use thread I wrap it round the plait anyway!

Couldn't plait with bands to save my life!! Never have been able to! For that reason, I could never work on a hunt yard - lol! Agree with TE about flexibility/scope to show off the horses neck etc...

Can't plait with bands very well so usually thread. With bands, they usually ping off or break and plait comes undone. I find stitching less hassle and quicker.

I was bought up on 10 years solid of every working hunter class in the country I'm sure! The lady I rode for would have my guts for garters if she ever found out I used bands! It's thread all the way for me

I have to use thread on Flynn, bands just can't control his mane!!!
Bands for everything else, unless its something VERY special and I feel like tarting them up!

Bands for most things, unless going showing, need to be uber smart then thread. Goddy has a nice mane so looks good either way IMO

I use bands most of the time, but for a proper posh do (county shows and the like!) I like to sew them in. Not that it does me any good

Mum plaits up for me and always plaits with thread - she is much faster and it looks much nicer. I normally plait with bands if I have to

One band per plait for dressage, very quick and easy providing I've remembered to pull the mane recently!

For showing, thread every time, up and down, not round and round.

bands are a lot easier and quicker to take out after sj for the xc, i need to hold on!

I cant plait with bands, I get all fingers and thumbs
But I cant plait with bands in my job anyway - ours are all show ponies/horses so have to be 100% in turnout.
Even for my own for dressage I use thread

For Dressage (which I don't do much at all) I always get guilt tripped into plaiting & I use bands.

bands for everything except 3-day trot ups, when i sew them. i used to sew for advanced too, till i followed Ian Stark back from xc and saw him pulling bands out on the way back to the box... i reckoned if bands were good enough for his horses, they were good enough for mine!

I dont know how to thread so its bands for me! I only plait for dressage. I never jump with plaits left in (ie. at a BE ODE). Luckily, dont need to for the showing I do as the horse is a M&M.

Thread all the way, hate it with bands think it looks much better with thread and I can go much faster than I can with bands.
