Dame_Twankey, my very headshy boy has already been introduced to the gun and is surprisingly ok about it and happy to have his head scratched with it. This came about because I was speaking to our slaughterman about how worried I was for the pony, and he offered to go and see how the pony reacted. That man does have a wonderful way with animals. This particular pony would not dare to put his head in a bucket if there were people anywhere near him.

i dont think my horse is going to live forever, however when the time comes, i will apply for permission to bury him or if that is not possible i will have him cremated and his ashes put into a casket to take pride of place on my mantle piece
[/ QUOTE ]Well, I would prefer the lions to eat Thomas up.
Once they are dead then they are dead and just a carcass imo
It costs enough to cremate a human....I'm not paying out buckets of money to cremate a horse...theres a credit crunch on you know??
When the time came for my daughter's first (loan) pony to go, one of the New Forest Agisters came out and shot him, he did it from a short distance away rather than up close. Unfortunately I couldn't bring myself to look at the exact moment the old boy was despatched. But, the pony saw the agister walking towards him with his gun and ear defenders and decided he would get up after all (had been down and colicking for several hours). I turned round to look after I heard the shot and I'm 99.9% certain he was shot from fairly close range, but not point blank. This will sound horrible, but they're very good at shooting ponies/cattle because unfortunately they get lots of practice by having to finish off the job started by motorists driving too fast in the forest. All of them "trained" for this unpleasant aspect of their job down at the buckhound kennels (no longer in existence)
In which case being head shy wouldn't be a problem...
Twitching sounds like a good option to me, as long as you can get the twitch on easily enough. I'm unsure about blindfolding, as you would not really want to shoot through the blindfold should it cover the forehead by accident. Maybe it wouldn't matter?
I know it isn't - that's why I always feel questionable for people spending all that extra money to have their own horse back as ashes; it just doesn't happen like that peeps

[/ QUOTE ]I was wondering about it being allowed to take pot shots as he is grazing but i didnt want to upset the delicate
it disturbs me because my horse is a big part of my life, to think that all people think of their horse is to put a bullet in its head and feed it to the hounds when its old and done is greatly disturbing IMO
also you wouldnt put a bullet in ur granny's head either would you?
this probably sounds so silly but i didnt realise you could give your pts horse or pony to zoo's/hunts, this post has been a learning curve, im glad i read it though, that maybe sounds quite bad but its opened my eyes about things!
I had my horse cremated and the ashes buried along with my old dog. Yes it cost an absolute fortune ( more than my new ponies cost me ) but at the time he was going to be my one and only horse ever, and had been with me 19 years. I couldnt think of any other way i would want it. I couldnt bear the thought of him going to the hunt. ( He couldnt have anyway was pumped full of drugs during colic
)
In my fluffy pink bunny world i like to think his are the only ashes in the casket ( and yes it was huge )
( please dont shatter my illusions on this one
)
However this was personal to me and i understand that its not for everyone. If people want to send their horses to the hunt/zoo why not, they aren't there anymore, its only a body
My horse was cremated and his ashes thrown off a hill up Rivington which he loved to gallop up. I didn't want to keep them, I did keep a shoe and a piece of his tail. Each to their own. I was very awkward and insisted he wasn't winched onto the lorry ;-)

Well, Tanks must have fed Thomas now and again to enable him to live to 30 years of age, so I imagine she quite likes him too.
The last decent thing we can do for our animals is have them put to sleep when they need it, and not keep them struggling along because we are too weak to cope with the bereavement. And there is little evidence that shooting a horse is any better or worse than lethally injecting it in terms of horse welfare, if that's your concern.
Again, what happens to the horse's body after death depends on the owner's wishes - in this case Tanks wants to recycle Thomas; not much different from burial.
