My yard is 5 1/2 miles (10 mins drive) and I go twice a day. I'd consider up to 15 mins drive, but above that I think I'd prefer help one end of the day - maybe someone to bring in, in the evening ?
Half an hour and nearly 25 miles - I only visit in the mornings - it is my mothers yard though.
I am thinking of livery closer to home as the driving is getting to me, especially now that I've got two to exercise - I could use the extra driving time to be doing other things. However, not sure I can be with many others and I do have a lot of "stuff".
12 minutes drive from home, 25 minutes drive from work. Times based on a clear run and not behind drivers who insist on 30mph all the way (it's a 60 the majority of the way) or cyclists in their hundreds
Eta - once a day. On full livery. And I have Tuesday's off horse duties.
Twice a day if I'm off work. Once otherwise and someone else does either morning or evening for me. They are just over a mile away, so lovely and close.
New yard (DIY) is 15miles from house so even if I go just once a day it will be 30miles a day will have to pay y/o to bring in/pick feet out/change rug each eve which will cost £3 per day
Currently 20 yards from the back door, so visit several times a day, but in the past have kept a horse up to an hour away, and just visited once a day. I would try to do it on the way to or from work, so the journey one was was shorter as it was partially shared with the journey to work.
For 6 months I had my home, job and horse in 3 different towns. Worth it for the right yard though, and peace of mind.
15 meters from the back door. They're all kept at home, and are checked at least 4 times a day. We have had some at livery more than 50 miles from us at one point, it wasn't ideal, and we could only visit at weekends, however, thankfully, it was only temporary.
Starting to think that I'm far too far away and doing it all wrong! I'm about 9 miles away and roughly 20 mins away. Up twice a day for 6 horses on DIY 7 days a week.
The stables are 30m from the front door and the field gate is 40m. I generally do the horses twice a day.
Before we bought the house we used to keep a pony here and I used to drive 10 miles each way daily. Luckily the previous owners liked dealing with the pony and would put it out in the morning and bring in, in the evening.
I wasn't working then so could do the trip in the daytime when the traffic was easy, I wouldn't have liked to do it in the rush hour.
If you are having a horse on full livery I would be prepared to travel up to 45 minutes. I used to have one horse on full livery when I was at school and lived in London, it was 25 miles away, about 40 minutes as mostly motorway. only ever went at weekends when parents would take me.
Now have 3 horses and 1 pony on completely DIY, rented land, up twice a day, sometimes 3 times a day if off work & they were 2, now 4 miles as I have moved, takes 10 minutes if no traffic, 30 minutes if bad traffic and level crossing is down. up at 5 am beofore work... winter is not fun!
8 miles - takes 20 minutes normally and a few minutes more in rush hour. Depending on work committments I'm normally there 4 or 5 days a week, usually in the afternoon or evening. Ponies live out all year and any feed/haying is normally done by me if I'm there, or by YO if I'm not. This means that often I do all his as well!
Years ago I was in a yard nearer to home, but the livery field was about half a mile from the yard, and needed a car escort if it was dark so instead of walking up and down the road I now spend a similar amount of time driving to the current yard. The hacking is loads better where we are as well.
My current yard is 30mins away from home and 20mins away from work. I work full time and am DIY so I visit twice a day. Realistically it is too much and I sacrifice riding time way too much. I am now moving to a yard 5mins from home on assisted DIY and I am so relieved.
I would always overestimate the impact of journey time.
5 minutes (if that!) drive away from home, same from work and usually visit twice a day on DIY- in summer, I get them in at 7am then go after work and ride/drive, muck out, fill nets etc etc. In winter, usually 3-4 mornings a week (share with my loaner) to turn out and muck out/put nets up then every night to ride/get in/sort nets and feeds etc etc. Currently, I'm 9 months pregnant and loaner and friend are taking very good care of them with Dads help so I pop up three times a week or so and say hello to them- I do pass them daily and stop to field check them while they're out though.
Mine are about 30 minutes away from home, but are 2 minutes away from where I now work in the morning. I am there once a day usually, although sometimes swing by on the way to work too. At one point they were further away from where I work, but I have changed jobs to cut down on driving. Love where they are, and that makes up for the driving.
10/15 min drive depending on how many people I meet on the country back roads etc I go twice a day, before and then after work unless YO is feeding our 2 as repayment for me feeding theirs during the week in the mornings. Normally I find myself going up twice a day even if someone else is feeding them as it just seems odd not to see them twice a day.
Depends on traffic, approx 10 mins, twice a day everyday unless daughter does for me, but I like to see my Po so still go even when I have the chance not to
5 miles drive taking about 10 minutes. My friend does mine Mon-fri because I work away a lot. I usually go up twice a day at weekends and once a day during the week when I've got time. I used to have him on livery 20 miles away which was a 30 minute drive each way. I hated it and lasted a year. To drive there in the winter when it was dark, wet or freezing was horrid. I would never keep him as far away again. The last straw was when he had colic and I couldn't rely on the YO.
Mine are about 5 minutes drive away from my house so I go up twice a day on my days off. On the days I am working I get the yard to turn out for me and then go up after work to muck out.
About 8 miles away or 15 min drive from home. 45 mins or 20 miles from work. Twice a day, every day, they are part of the family. Exercise and muck out before work and bring in and hug in evening. Thankfully OH horsey so duties shared.
Would love to have them at home, but horsey properties in this are are for the mega rich, so I shall have to continue dreaming!
On the doorstep, literally. This was taken from my sitting room, front lawn. I would not have horses if I had to keep them elsewhere now, been there, done that, not keen on it.
The furthest away I have ever had my horses (DIY) was 10 minutes stroll, 2 miles, and that was far enough for me.
How far though is entirely dependent on yourself, how the horse is kept, your mode of transport, hours etc, family etc, DIY with small children in tow is no fun I can vouch for that
If the yard is in the same direction as work I should think that would make distance much more flexible. DIY has to be the most restrictive, unless you are on assisted.
mine are on two yard, one is just over a mile if I drive, as the drive way is really long, if I cycle I can come down the back track at its slightly under 1 mile. the next yard is about another 1.5 / 2 miles further into the village! same distance between them if I drive or cycle! takes no more than 7 mins to get to the furthest yard
oh and in the summer I go to both yards at least twice a day, winter its normally just mornings and my ym/friend do the evening checks when they check their own horses!
