As in the title really, searching for a horse but can't find anything suitable within a 2 hours radius of where I live (county Durham) am I looking to close to home?
For the right one about 400 miles. For an exceptional one anywhere in Britain or Ireland. For a dressage horse anywhere
Dont do anything much older than a yearling though so it is more to do with shortening the delivery distance if possible to be fair to the baby than distance for me to travel
I am not looking for a superstar dressage horse or anything, I'm looking for something 4-5 years old that has the basics but needs bringing on with the potential of some be90's and possibly the view of advancing a little if it turns out we both have the potential. My budget is not tiny which is why I'm confused as to why I can't find anything
I'll quite happily travel, not really sure why people won't for something they are investing that much money/time into. I am near Edinburgh, first horse bought from Pen Llyn but had previously travelled around Wales visiting Section D studs. Second one bought from Cumbria, 3rd one from Portugal.
830 miles round trip . Being from Scotland it is usual to have to travel pretty far to find the right horse as there are far fewer for sale up here. I was only planning on looking as far as Yorkshire, but ended up in Kent. That is why I think having a video on the advert is really important. I saw my horse's video and I fell in love!
I have had ones delivered on basis of a picture and show results from devon and Shetland. The furthest I went to look at in the flesh was 2 in Yorkshire, on two seperate trips. The first one was totally NOT as described and was lame so ghat was a complete and utter waste of time. The other one was on box rest/walker work, the lad trotted him up for me - well I say trotted it was more 3 steps of trot then an explosion of legs and feet in mid air! Needless to say I had seen all I was going to see of him and took him on He was brought up to Musselburgh races for me on April Fools day and it couldn't have been more apt - he is called Mister Laurel and his big bro is Mister Hardy lol!
While looking I probably did about 900 miles in total, but the one I bought was about 80 miles away in the end. I did drive 250 miles to see one, as soon as she stepped out of the stable I knew she wasn't right
Reg was about a mile from our house! He still lives there now, things could not have worked out better there- Al has the perfect owner, the perfect horse and the perfect yard!
Smokey came from Reading way, so about 3/4 hours in the car. But tbh, for the right horse you have to travel I think. He's pretty much exactly what Al was after though
I didn't leave my house, saw a photo, rang up and brought him!
I will add I had brought off the man before so I knew what I was getting, a week later he was shipped over.
The easiest way of buying a horse as I hate horse shopping.
One came from Ireland
One bought at auction in Holland. Well May be I should say OH did the bidding! and made me sit on my hands so we did not come home with two!
I regularly buy horses in Ireland but it doesn't seem so far away as I'm from there originally. Younger son's 11.2hh was 400 miles and a flight away. If it is the right horse or pony I will always travel.
5 minutes. Strangely enough was owned by someone about 3 hours away. She moved him to a friend of hers to sell. Saw him advertised on horse quest and thought really had to view as so local
My 2 welsh cobs (Cwmesgair stud) and my gypsy cob have all turned out to be my dream ponies. And to think they were 2 minutes around the corner from where I live. I was very lucky. They found me but that's another story. And I've now got a wonderful friend and all the help and support one needs in the horsey game.
When I was horse hunting I was prepared to travel pretty much from one end of the country to another to find "the one" - luckily for me I found her about an hour away and she was the first horse I went to see! x
I started looking within around an hour and a half journey time and I was just about to extend this when I found "the one" an hour and a half away. I had discounted him already but my friend liked him and pushed me towards his advert a few times, I kept finding myself looking at him yet again so I went to view him thinking he wasn't really for me, and completely fell for him straight away!
