How far do you travel from home to your livery yard?

So who has it cushdy and who has a long hard journey to get to the yard? Excluding those lucky blighters who have their neddies at home?

I have my horse just 1 mile from my house and can walk there no worries, but I did once keep him about a 30mins drive away, it was on the way to work but was a right pain on the weekend!

Those who do travel bizarre long distances why?

I'm doing some research for a business plan I'm putting together so really, really appreciate as many replies as possible!

Thank you all

:-)

I travel 16 miles from home to horse it's almost all motorway though and takes me 20mins - the time I don't mind, it's the petrol that's killer.

15 minute drive from home so not too bad. I don't do mornings otherwise it would be impossible for me to keep him at such an amazing place so go thirty minutes over my usual journey home from work direct to the yard ... if that makes sense

10 min drive of country lanes but depending on if the single track with passing places is clear or has a large lorry wedged in it, it can take 40 mins as there is no way toturn rround! I also work at my yard :)

2 miles away, not enough room in my garden! takes 10 minutes max when railway crossing not down. when I lives in west London it was 25 miles! 40 minutes if no traffic on motorway, never want to go back to that (although of course I couldn't go twice a day)

15 mins/7 miles - but on way to and from work :D

Weekends I try to tie in with going elsewhere during the summer. In winter I was getting up at crack of sparrow fart and turfing out and then going back to sleep, then mucking out before getting into stables in the afternoon :D

1.2 miles, its less if I go on my bike coz I don't have the go the long way round!

I kept them about 10 miles away before but it was soo much for me! I like to be in walking distance for that just in case moment, ie snow etc?

but I am on my own, so I can't rely on anyone else to do them for me!

Used to be 20 miles/30 mins each way as it was the closest I could find that ticked all the boxes - as of 2 weeks ago I've halved that as found a new place. Such a relief!

Current loan horse is an hour on a good day from home. From work an hour and a half.
old loan pony ( in the days of unemployment) was 2 hrs.
As they're loans and I'm in london I consider that reasonable.
if I could drive I could get to current yard in 20 mins. :(
Sadly cant afford to play ponies and learn to drive!

Personally for DIY livery I would want the yard to be within walking distance for bad weather, and 10mins max by car. I have a pony on part loan 30 minutes away, and it is just too far, I can't afford 2 hrs travelling a day in either time or fuel. As it is I struggle to get up regularly.

Hence why we are hoping to move him closer. I've found a lovely private yard, owner on site, 5 mins drive away.

I do know of a lady who has quite a few on DIY and her yard is a 30-40 minute drive from her house. I may be wrong but I don't think she works though.

I travel about 25 mins each way twice a day!!

I've found that the further out you go, you get a lot more for your money. Better grazing, smaller herds, better facilities, better hacking etc.

My main priority is that my horses are happy which I don't think they would be closer to home so I'm willing to travel that bit further.

Happy horses, happy me :)

I'm 15 minutes walk or 5 minutes by car yard with turnout but no grazing but fab riding. Which is why potentially moving to a yard 1hrs walk and 15 minutes by car with grazing is going to take a lot of thought. Xxx

Same here.

7 miles -15 mins. I am looking for somewhere within walking distance but no great hurry as the current yard is great so i don't mind the drive.

I'm approx 45mins away from yard & at the I really hate the wasted time driving on rubbish roads. Costs a fortune in diesel & tyres, rubbish roads wrecks the car & have a horrendous mileage in car.
But......I just love the yard!! Really wudn't think of having him anywhere else (& there livery spaces 10mins away from me). Am seriously considering moving house so nearer the yard ;)

6 miles. Being on DIY, I wouldn't want it much further tbh. I looked into better yards further away, but it just isn't viable to be doing there/back twice a day, as well as potential emergency visits.

When i was living at my mums it was an hours bus ride :eek: my mum still lives there but my dad takes her so around 15 min drive.
We live less than a mile away so a 5 min walk.
Building on the field so they will be in the back garden soon :)

3 miles, which is a 10 minute drive. I used to loan a horse that on a good day was 30 minute drive and bad day, over an hour! One of my requirements when I looked at yards was they needed to be 15 mins max drive due to being on DIY and in bad weather still walkable!

About a five minute drive or a half hour walk (its up a big hill - quicker coming home!) so about a mile if driving, a bit less if walking as its a more direct route.

Have been on yards up to 40mins drive away in the past which I would only consider again if it was full livery, I found it was too much for me doing that distance on DIY and not worth it for the reasons I had moved for, and as others have said I like to be as near as possible in case of emergency/snow etc

I rent a field behind my house but annoyingly am not able to rent the narrow strip of land that separates my garden from the field so its a couple of minutes to walk there

I work 60/90 miles (two locations) away from home so if I needed to put the ponies on livery I would choose a stable along the route but the further from home the more likely I would put them on full livery and look for a place with the owner/manager on site just in case I couldnt get there for some reason
