How far do you walk?

Have spent a happy hour plotting our usual walk routes on there and the majority are around three miles, giving us a weekday average of six miles and a weekend one of more like seven or eight. :eek: Madam has finally embraced the concept of fetch and probably racks up a few more in the park most days because of it, plus training etc.

Just curious, really, I was amazed to read on a husky forum (admittedly a very pet-orientated rather than working one) that some of them walk their dogs for twenty minutes twice a day, on-lead, and that's it. :confused:
 
I had this very same thought today!

OH has a GPS tracker on his phone, so I know our average walk is also 3 miles. Giving us the same weekday average as you.
Weekends we used to do about 9 miles per day, but since we've moved we haven't had him out for any 'proper' walks yet!

Some people's ideas of 'long' walks really saddens me, surely that's why you have a dog!!
I can't wait to go on holiday with Otto and leave the house in the morning and not come back until dinner time! :D

ETA - Otto probably covers at least 5 times the distance I do!!! :D

That goes without saying, lol! :D Dax is walked pretty much everywhere on a 50ft lead these days and zips back and forth at will, plus I can now confidently drop it in most open spaces to chuck a ball about which has been a huge relief.

I love being able to walk without an agenda, we went hill walking on Monday and I just chose a path at random, took us an extra two hours to get back to the car. :o I did have a map, was just enjoying myself too much! There were lots of tourists in the car park and a man came over to ask what breed she was, she immediately flopped down for a belly rub and he was like "I thought this kind of dog would be manic, she's quiet as a labrador!" which I will take as high praise indeed. Didn't point out that she was just knackered. :p

Come to think of it, the twenty minutes thing would probably explain most of the behavioural problems posted about on the same forum...
 
Not sure how much ground we cover but the 'big' walk of the day (weekedays) takes about an hour and then there are the two mooches they do whilst I am doing the horses (at least 15 minutes each) and they have the run of the garden all day (half an acre). Weekends I try and take them some where different for a big walk which depending on the weather/time of year will be in addition to the normal 3 walks - and they are off lead for as much time as possible so free to cover as much ground as they want.:D
 
:D:D i walk my 2 about an hour off lead in the morning and about half hour in the evening mainly off lead., not sure how far this is but i walk quickly(dont stroll!!) i have a lurcher and a collie cross and they need to run. if i had a bit more energy they would get longer but they seem fine with this amount of daily exercise ....:D:D
 
I cannot imagine Otto having just a 20 minute walk a day! It's actually scary!

Being back at the boarding kennels has really opened my eyes to what some dogs have to put up with, ridiculously hairy dogs that never get brushed (we had a beared collie in that was literally one big mat!), dogs that don't get walked, people that clearly have no clue what they are feeding their dogs (BAKERS :rolleyes:) and the dogs with the biggest issues - Border Collies - poor, under-stimulated mutts :(
 
So true that lack of exercise causes a lot of behavioural problems. My 2 oldies don't walk so far now, Buffy has a couple of miles road work, Saffy just goes for wanders round the field. Evie goes for the road walk with Buffy, then another walk on her own for a similar distance, plus running free whenever I am home. Longer walks at the weekend, and on a Wednesday evening a friend and I try and go for a good walk (5 miles plus) over the hills.
 
Depends so much on what we're doing but 1 - 3 miles on week days and up to 5+ miles some weekends but he's low energy. I have the feeling madam will want more.
 
I don't.:)

Dogs have free run of the place whenever I am outside, they zoom about and do their thing.

Most days (excepting +36C days like the last few) I take the quad around the track (half mile oval) a couple of times, they lope alongside quite happily (with a few detours to chase jack rabbits, deer, butterflies etc)

I do not DO walking for walkings' sake, my hips don't like it, and the dogs never leave the property, obviously the poor things are terribly deprived. ;)

I have one like that too, what goes through their heads do you think? I would be a bored, twitchy wreck if I lay still for as long as dogs do.
 
Weekdays is an hours walk, I think it's about 3-4miles. All flat and Beastie is off lead so does a lot more than what I do! Lol

At weekends she gets the hour long walk as well as about 45minute walk, but it is onlead but is hilly. In saying that, I think it takes 45minutes as I am strugglnig on the hills :D

My shepherds have always been like this, brief run round and then happy to lie wherever I am. Evie however is the exception, in the very hot weather I had to keep her shut in as she never stopped charging round, finding toys to play with etc, until her tongue was nearly on the floor she was panting so much. I honestly think she would have kept going until she collapsed from heat exhaustion if I hadn't stopped her.
 
1.5-3 miles 3 times a day usually. Bit more at the weekends. But then she's a lazy sod who is currently still in bed!
 
ive have just been out with him and (child) was in her buggy...he was like a dog possessed- i found it a struggle to keep (child) safe aswell as try and control him...at one point the buggy was on 2 wheels as he was off on one...

(husband) gives me grief coz i dont take him out during day as he says he aint getting out enough so ive started to go out with him during day and i really am struggling with it...

one day the buggy will end up in the road i just know it!

See this is why I stick to the one forum.....

I see a woman a few days a week who jogs two dogs and a double buggy. Re-spect!
I'd recommend a certain piece of kit. For the person who wrote that!!!!
 
The members of that particular forum will predictably respond "oh, poor doggy, he must be choking himself, buy a harness..."

I bet that woman's got arms of steel. :D Huge respect to her for pulling it off, I see a few round here and I worry for the kid's safety.
 
I very rarely take my lurcher for a walk. He spends all day (7am - 8pm) on a yard mainly sleeping in the office, but also running behind the pick up across the fields and through the woods. If I creep put of the office without him noticing then he tracks me by scent no matter which mode of transport I chose (horse/car/pick up :cool:). He also plays with liveries/competitors dogs and accompanies me out hacking in the fields so he's not deprived in terms of exercise.

Our family dogs just go to feed the horses during the week and they get a big walk at the weekend. They're older dogs and they're very happy sunbathing in the garden whilst we're all out.
