Evening all,

I don't venture in here very often so please be nice

We get mixed reports about our Labrador, some people say he is very over weight, some say he is fine. His weight does seem to fluctuate depending on how much he has managed to scavenge  and how much exercise he gets. I think he is probably fatter during the Winter as obviously he doesn't get so much 'outside time.'

Anyway on to the piccys, not the best I'm afraid but these were taken today.....

So what do you think.....obese, well covered, Skinny (Haha! :D )?

He looks well covered to me but looks like he's meant to be a chunky chap wouldn't say obese. Can you feel his ribs?

He looks like a lovely boy :)

Hiya.

Ok, so he is quite overweight. But trust me, compared to some labs, he's positively skinny! I would want quite a bit more weight off of him, but I wouldn't say he's "fat".

xxxx

I don't think he looks fat from those two pics. My lab is much fatter and he gets loads of exercise, barely anything to eat yet I am still struggling to get the weight off! Yours looks much better than mine!

Fortunately shooting starts in September so he will lose weight then thankfully!! Unlike you, mine do more in the winter than the summer!

He's a handsome chap! I'd say he was more well-covered rather than fat - but I wouldn't like to see him with any more weight on. You can body-score dogs too, so this link here might be helpful if you're worried or want to keep an eye on him :)

He's a skinny minny compared to the lab that's down the road from us - I'm tempted to steal her at the dead of night and run round the block a few times with her :o

abit over weight but not fat. well looked after and seems fit enough, just cut food a tiny bit and flyball worked on my dog. he is lovely dont worry nothing to worry about. good healthy dog.

I'd agree with well covered:) - they are buggers to keep weight off if the are thiefs/scavengers!!:rolleyes::rolleyes: My sister has the same problem with her lab - who is a chunkier build than Max - Sam looks like he is a squarer chunkier build lab as well.

Just keep his excercise up - mind you if he keeps playing with those cuties it will help!!:D:D:D

I would say def over weight, but not obese or anything, he looks a stocky build, do you know how much he weighs, just to add, im a little obsessed with my dogs being ideal weight (wish I could say the same for myself):o

my black lab isnt a dissimilar build and varies between 28-30kg...

id want yours slimmer if he were mine, I do mike to keep my dogs lean, hard and fit though. I wouldnt say he looks grossly overweight, just carrying a bit more than I would like. Ive seen much much worse.

Not disgustingly fat but I'd want him slimmer. Labs are prone to arthritis in later life and having him lean (i.e carrying as little weight as possible) will quite literally add an extra year onto his life. We have a 15yr old lab who has almost no arthritis (VERY unusual at her age), because she's been lean all her life.

Being a little skinny will do him no harm at all but being a bit overweight will be knackering his joints - I'd slowly get him loosing weight until you start to think 'huh, he's looking very skinny'

Thank you all, he is indeed a very chunky chap, he dwarfs other Labs  Not sure how much he weighs TBH, will have to get him weighed at some point!

I'll make sure his feed gets cut down and try and stop mum from feeding him treats  hopefully then he'll shed a few pounds and start to look a bit slimmer :)

He is lovely, but I would like less weight on him. My old lab has PILED weight on now she is retired. Younger lab is starting to lose her summer belly as we've starting shooting again.

My family have always had Labs - i sympathise!!

In terms of pet Lab size I would say he is at a good weight....in terms of what is ideal and what your vet is probably saying I guess he is overweight. (this all comes from someone who has just been told to get 6kg off a spaniel!! ;) )

BTW - we have just bought "slow down" bowls so our spaniels are taking longer to eat slightly less food which seems to make them feel fuller :)
