How long an interval between acquiring two new puppies?

been browsing pets4homes and found a really cute rough coated bitch puppy in alfreton, derbyshire, anywhere near you?

I am near to Alfreton and have JR's. I have had a look on the site and done a bit of searching re the phone numbers and brief info and the puppies at Dronfield will be genuine and not a puppy farming set up.

I was looking for a Lab on this site but after I stopped because of fears about breeders and puppy farming, I'm sure reputable people are on that site as well but be carefeul

I was all set to view a pup tomorrow but the vendor wouldn’t give out their address ‘for security reasons’, I was supposed to meet them at a supermarket and follow them home.
Hmm. Passed on that.

Am instead viewing a 3yo JRT bitch tomorrow, spayed, vaccinated. Sounds genuine, I hope.

I got a cracking lurcher pup advertised in H&H whose breeders wouldn’t give me their address for security reasons - I met them in a layby, they seemed to think I was OK, I went to their house and saw the litter, the mum and multiple photos of the dad/descriptions of pedigree and performance etc etc. Didn’t bother me on the least, I’ve seen far too many stories of pups being stolen by people posing as buyers - and if they didn’t take me to their house etc then I’d walk away at that point 😊

Fabulous friendly dog, loves people. Was very good with the older dog they had, which is also being rehomed (nearly came back with two). Hasn’t stopped zooming around. First vet check booked for this evening.

Town dog, but comes to call, been walked in the Lakes with no sign of inclination to chase sheep.

The plan is to get her well settled in to country ways, and then to look for a pup in the New Year sometime. She’s been for her first walk (all on lead), rolled in cow slurry, had her first warm shower... We didn’t have any dog toys in the house as Toby wasn’t interested, but OH picked up one at the vets.

Thanks all for your very helpful comments about the age gap thing. The new girl is hopefully young (3 yrs) and playful enough to be able to cope well with a pup, but old enough to have some sense. Her previous owners thought she’d relish a young pup for company.

why do you say that as a matter of interest? As I explained in my post, I can entirely understand people doing that with certain breeds- in my case the dogs were very well bred working lurchers and the breeder didn’t want to attract individuals from the travelling community to his house

We had to meet Daisy’s breeders outside a pub and then follow them home. There was absolutely nothing dodgy about it. They were just security conscious.

Re the viewing security thing.

The pup was out in the sticks in Wales. The vendor said her house was tricky to find, the post code wasn’t accurate, so she’d lead me there.

I’m good at navigating, so I said no need for that, I’d save her the trouble if she gave me a Google maps pins drop or the coordinates, which is what we often use ourselves when motorhoming. The vendor thought this was fishy, but as a buyer I thought the refusal to disclose the address was fishy.

She thought I might have been out to steal her pups, and I thought she was out to conceal a puppy farm (I would have googled the address to see if anything untoward turned up).

Not sure what the answer is, really.

How old was the companion? 😟😟

cross posted

If there had been a sob story about the companion, I’d have brought her home anyway! As it is, I think she should be ok to rehome, as she’s calm and easy. But I will check that it’s all worked out and if necessary go back for her!

Hadn’t realised that navigating to Bolton from here, going on the M60 near the Trafford Centre on Black Friday, was such a daft idea o_O.

Bless-you 💓 💓 💓

I’m delighted you got her, OP! We managed a fortnight between losing one and getting pups. We were both looking at the same litter, weird, given the common breed.

Completely agree Lev. If I bred a litter( I wouldn't, all that work and mess ) I wouldn't give my address to anyone. Whole litters are stolen now and it would be a huge risk.

I agree, there’s a risk (I’ve heard of whole litters being stolen not far from me) but then how would a genuine buyer visit the litter? How do people come to see/choose/pick up a pup? I suppose meeting them in advance away from the property is an idea, but if I’m buying a pup, I want to see it first before deciding to go ahead. Plus, to avoid puppy farmers, you’re told not to meet breeders and collect/pay for pups away from the home environment without seeing the mother/rest of the litter.

You meet them at a neutral venue for the sussing out. You don't collect the dog there.
