Niagara is going on DIY next week, so will have to get up early and muck out, feed etc..
How long do you spend mucking out and feeding ect, in the morning and what time do you get up/leave yard for work?

Thanks - not sure what i'm letting myself in for, as I have only ever been on full livery

I make all my feeds up in the evening and they get left outside their box and then the yard feed all the horses when thye open the yard.
I change her rugs from stable to turnout and then turn her out and muck her out.
With rubber mats she doesnt have that big a bed so mucking out doesnt take long.
I only spend about 30 minutes up there in the morning.

i spend around 45mins in the morning, thats givin him breakie, doing hay nets, water, then muckout (on shavings and dont deep litter so takes longer) then walking up to the field its about half a mile away!!!!! hate it!!!! then soaking speedi beat and making up part of his dinner... leave at 8, finish at 8:45ish 9

hello- i get up at 5am and get to yard for about 5.30am. i skip my two horses out (they are deep littered) and tie up their haynets that i made up the night before. they eat their breakfasts while i'm mucking out. takes about 20 minutes. in summer it takes me longer because they are out over night and come in for the day so i have to trail up the field for them...but obviously i do all jobs the night before....
i leave for work at 7.15

So why does it take me hours! Six neds, out most of them most of the time. Feed. Muck out the odd one or two who might have been in (max ten mins per stable). Don't use haynets any more, so a wheelbarrow of hay and lobbing it over the stable walls is not exactly taxing or time intensive. And my 'hours' doesn't include riding.

Given everyone elses response, I think I need to get organized...

you have SIX!!! lol i have one lol...
i think im slow to be honist.. im fussy tho i have to have his stable perfect every little drop of poo has to go banks all level ect lol eeekkkk

Hi I get up at 5.30, get to stables for 5.55ish. Change rugs x 3 and turn out, 3 different fields, hope to be done that by 6.20ish. Then muck out and do hay and water ready for evening x 3 by 7am, leave to get home for 7.30 to leave for work by 8!! at least when I finish work I know everything is ready.

It really depends though as when I start the winter it takes a while to get into my routine where I can do all three that quick!!!

Everything has a place and everything is usually in it's place. Feeds are easy. Hay is easy. Mucking out is easy. It must just be me...

Ha ha, don't worry about it Mrs M, on a Sunday when I don't have to work, it takes me all day just to muck out etc, I always wonder where the time goes. I'm the only one at my yard at that time in the morning so much easier to get done when not so much nattering going on!

Used to be a perfectionist

But then realized that there really weren't enough hours in the day lol I think with me it is a symptom of the rest of my life, and therefore everything needs a good kick up the doo-dah, starting with getting up earlier (starting with going to sleep earlier, et al lol).

An hour and five minutes for three is impressive

Thanks but I do have to race to get everything done, and there are days when one of them plays up and I perhaps won't get haynets finished! (I always leave haynets till last cos I hate them with a passion)

At the mo he's stabled, but when he goes out during the day -

Turn out, muck out/leave bed up, put hay in stable, scrub out buckets, fill water buckets. Takes about half an hour. I only do him at weekends so I get up at 8, get to the yard at 8.30. YO gives breakfast in the morning.

lol fair play to you! i couldnt do six horses!!!
if i only have the one and maybe another one soon but a youngster i couldnt do more i think...
oh bollox i have to poo pick field tomorrow, i done it on monday think i could get away with another week?

Hi, I usually work from home (luxury) but at the moment am on a contract in London so, get up 5.45, take dogs and walk over to yard. Give some hay to the two ponies who live out. Feed the six that are in (feeds made up the night before, haylage put in their paddocks the night before). Let ducks out, kick goats (!), chuck neds into field. Muck out four of the stables (daughter does the other two on night shift). Leave the yard at 7.30, get home, shower, have breakfast, leave for the 8.29 train. Easy!

I have two, soon to be three
smile.gif

Get up at 6am, have large cup of tea; Fetch them in for brekkie ;
I'm now retired so I can do what I want when I want
smile.gif

4pm, give them tea, turn out ;
Muck out stables, refill haynets ( they only eat 1 slice each if that) fill water. Takes about 15 mins.
Thats it; easy peasy when they are out a lot of the time.

I normally do mine at 7 to 8ish (dependent on whether I have college/working/riding in the morning etc) feed them, change rugs, put the pony that inhales her food out, put horse who eats fast but has huge breakfast in yard to finish breakfast, do water buckets, muck out, empty wheebarrow and leave in hay barn to do haylage in evening.

Put other horse out then scrub feed bowls and put in feed room. Done. Hate it if someone interferes in my system!! Sometimes leave mucking out until evening but hate that looming feeling that follows you around all day knowing you've still got to do it when you get home!!

It takes me about half an hour when I am at work. I do feed the night before and while she is eating in stable I go and fill her hay nets and water bucket up and collect the barrow and tools for a quick muck out.

When she is done eating I take her down to the field then muck out – not very well or thoroughly I’m afraid, but it gets done properly every other day. When I have done mucking out I put her feed in the manger for tea time so all I have to do at the end of the day is bring her in.

ive got 3 on diy

i start work at 8 or 8.30 am

so i get up at 6 or half past-yard is two mins drive away.

feed them ready made feeds, check their legs, turn out, put their haynets out in the field, make sure water isnt frozen

muck them out(on mats with full bedding(mixed wood elets and megazorb),do waters, haynets(tied to fence and sprayed with hose and left to drain in the day) and evening feeds +
sweep up. takes 30-40 mins

sometimes will keep one in and lunge/ride them for 20mins before turning out.if i want to ride two i wil get there for 5.40am.

takes me an 40mins to an hour to do them and get back for around 7/7.30

shower, breakfast, wander over to work (30second walk away)

finish around 5pm, have a chill out for 20mins first.

at horses for 5.30-brought in, groomed, feet washed, fed, haynets hung up, fields poo picked (in dark)
usually ride one for 30-45mins (or lunge) in school with lights on.
back between 6.30-8pm depending how long/how many/if i ride.

i get up about 7.30 go and feed my boy, go across the road feed friends pony, change jazz's rug and turn her out, then go back across the road and get joe bring him over and collect pony on the way to there feild, the poo pick, then i either go home at this point or i'll stay and muck out and ride ect.

I have one on assisted diy
Start work at 10am, get to the yard about 8am, am normally the first on yard so have to feed everything, about 20 odd. Start to muck out while she's eating, make up haynet and feeds, water etc and turn her out. YO brings her in at night.
Occasionally if it isnt frozen i'll get to the yard at 7am and work her.
Am home about 8.45am ish.

about 5 -10 mins. my neddy gets chucked out into field, quick check over then out. if its frosty he gets hay chucked over the fence. he's happy.

putting him out in the field for the day of more important than a mucking out a stable at 6.30am.

Only about half an hour...get to his field at 5.30am - he lives out 24/7 with a field shelter. I fill haynets and put around his field, water, poo pick by head torch, check he is ok and then move the fence if it is that day (strip grazed).

Generally i get to the yard for around 6.30am, sometimes earlier.
Feed horses in the barn first.
In winter i give mine a haynet on the yard whilst i muck out, do waters, put haynet in etc.
In summer i turn mine straight out and then do my chores.
Get home around 7.15am ish, shower, eat, get ready and get to work for 9am start.

I'm alot quicker in the week when i have to get to work. i go about 7.30, turn out, muck out, hay, water and prepare feeds. I'm usually home by 8.15 and then shower and get to wokr for 9. At the weekends i'm much slower as there are people to chat to, and i scrub out my feed and water buckets.

I have three at home - 2 in work, 1 retired.
I get to the horses at 5:15.
Tacked up and ready to ride and lead (complete with reflective gear/lights) 5:30
Back 6:30. Untacked, rugged up and in field by 6:45.
6:45 all three straw stables fully mucked out, waters filled and hay chucked on floor. As I can only walk and trot on the roads as it's dark they get no feed only ad lib haylage.
7:15 in shower
7:30 in car on way to work for a break and a sit down!

Suffice to say I resemble a headless chicken getting ready in the morning and I don't think I could muck out at that speed for 6, I'm not unfit and I'm tired by the time I've finished the 3...

Evenings I just bring them in from the field; change rugs if necessary, pick feet, give them general check and if they are getting fed they get one feed at 6pm then one at about 10:30 - I just don't have time to feed in the am too.

i have the one. but there is 2 of us at our yard so i generally see 2 the other one.
i get down the yard before 8:30 it entirely depends if i have college, work or day off.
on a college day for example:
get up at 7. down yard for 7:30 feed the 2 of them.put hay in field
turn other one out. tack up mine and ride for 20 mins.
get back and put turnout rug on and turnout.
muck out straw bed. do 2 haynets, water and do 2 feeds.
leave at 9 0clock and straight to college. if im working then the other livery turns him out for me. so i dont got to work smelling of horse
laugh.gif

i go back down in the eve b4 it gets dark and bring him in. change rug. feed and pick out feet. done
laugh.gif

I'm up for about 10 mins in the morning. I occasionally change his rug which adds on a minute or two. He's really clean so its about 3 minutes to muck out and 5 mins to walk to field gate and back.

I get up at 6am, am down the yard by about 20 past. I feed 5 horses and pust Suni's turnout socks on. At the moment mum has been helping me in the mornings but when she doesn't i start mucking out while they're eating. Turnout Suni and Joe and finish mucking out, do water and nets and soak Suni's ponynuts ready for her tea. Am back home for 7 for a warm up! (Anyone else wear about a million layers in the morning?)
