My 5 year old border collie was diagnosed with mild hip dysplasia which has caused arthritis. I put in a claim about a month ago for the x-rays, tests and a months medication. We then went back for a check-up and he has been given Rymadil again and cosequin (?) May have got the name wrong but it contains glucosamine. We got a 3 month supply of this so I have now paid out for two vets bills of approx. £250 each. The second lot of medication claim has gone in this week. However, £500 of up-front vets fees in 4 weeks is expensive and I was wondering how quickly the rest of you received your cheques after you submitted your claims. He is insured with Tesco Pet Insurance.
Sorry for the long post!xx

Not all of mine are insured but I have two that are....one with M&S and one with the Kennel Club (g*d help me!!). I've made claims against both of these policies and both paid out within about a week to ten days. Communication is paramount.....I would suggest you call your company and ask if they require clarification on any points and ask for a current status.

Do you know who underwrites your policy?

I have mine with Directline who take 8-10weeks and for that reason the vet generally requires upfront payment for x-rays (have had to fork out £6500 before )

I now have a credit card which is the "dog card" and kept with their papers in case of emergency  :o

PS - we give our Springer Glycoflex II supplement for his hip & elbow dysplasia which is currently only mild...he is 4 :( you can get it online without prescription and it works out a lot cheaper!

I work at a vets. Direct Line are about 1 of the slowest to pay out, it takes about 3 months for them to send money for a claim to a vet, that's why vets don't like doing direct claims. Tesco's always seem to phone up to ask for the clinical history even though we always send it with the claim. I would say to phone them to see how long it will take.

Pet Plan pay out more or less by return of post. I made a claim, I had to pay the vet and then send the receipt and they paid me direct.

As for Tesco, my sister made a claim when her dog was run over. The dog was insured for death and there was some damage to the car. What a rigmarole that was! First they told her to claim on her home insurance and disputed the cost of the dog. The car damage was repaired by the drivers husband and was superficial so no claim in that direction.
Sister had to send them the receipt for the cost of the dog (bought about 6 years previously) and then they wanted the name of the breeder - it took them about four months to call the breeder and another two to pay out so, it was about 9 months before sister was paid.

Thanks all. I'll definitely look into the other supplement. A dog-card is an excellent idea. I don't use a credit card as I don't trust myself!! But, for insurance emergencies that I know I'll get back I think that's a great idea.

I'm not sure who underwrites Tesco Pet Insurance off the top of my head as I know it changed when my premium went up this year but will check and get onto them to find out what's going on.xx
