How long to muck out

No including riding your own and everything else you’d be up there for 4/5 hours a day not including travel time. With a job and uni I wouldn’t do it even for any kind of discount.

Probably oversight and mucking out 2 horses after school for years, had to be quick to have time to ride - if i have more time and want it perfect itll take me 45 minutes as opposed to 15!

It takes me 1.5 hours to turn out five. Take hay up field. Water. Muck out five stables. Put straw in. Stuff ten haynets and hang. They have two each. Fill up water trug buckets in stables. Do dinner ready. Feed chickens. Feed cats.

I could do this at my new yard but not at my old. Purely because the distance to bring in, turn out, muck heap and straw/hay barn was all miles away.

it really depends on your set up I think. I thought I was mega slow but I’m not. It was all the extra walking

I have this where I am at the moment. Distance between stables and field, and stables and barn (for hay/ straw) and even stables and the tap, is quite far. Nothing is set up for convenience, put it that way!

I was just thinking that too as it takes me 45/50 mins to do 2 but that actually includes rugging, feed, turnout, mucking out, sweeping down and feeding and watering the chickens. But I’m never in much of a hurry and just potter at a leisurely pace.

Needs must! I ride & do all my jobs before work in the Autumn/Winter so if I want to ride each day, I have to be quick as I refuse to get up even earlier ?

I agree with others saying it's a bad deal, but also have to add- how exactly is that full livery? You are still doing the bulk of the work every day (aside from, I presume, bringing them in and feeding etc at night).

Sounds like overall you'd end up paying £35 per week per horse for DIY/part livery with the pleasure of mucking out the YO's 8 horses?! Pretty cheeky if you ask me ?

Kind of depends on what kind of muck out they require. If just a skip out then not long, but a decent muckout for horses that are not turned out. Not a chance, you would be better off getting a job in a shop or pub for a few hours a week to make up the 70.

Edited to say when I had my horse on a wood pellet deep litter I could do the mucking out part in about 5-10 minutes but pellets are far too expensive now!

Just mucking out or haying, water and turning in or out too? Would depend on lots of things like bedding type and how messy they are, and also how close the muck heap is. Ten is a lot to do around the commitments you have described though. I struggle with three!

If I’m in a perfection mood, it takes me 2hrs to fully muck out, brush mats etc, fresh straw down, redo waters, haynets, make up feeds etc.

If I’m in a rush, I get it down to an hour but this means I’m skimping on the beds a bit (ie not getting 100% of the wet out) and just topping the waters up (assuming their buckets are clean enough for this!)?

and if I’m extremely busy… feeds and nets will already be made up, no wee taken out just a full skip and fresh straw down.

How are some of you so fast?

My horse has a 4 inch or so deep shavings bed.
First remove the poos. Then start lifting the bed from one side of the stable, lifting it to the sides. Keep going front to back like this until you find the wet , take the wet out.
Once all the bed is up , sweep the middle and start pulling the bed back down. Once all down, I use a straw fork to turn the banks over.
It takes me 10-15 minutes to do that.
But if the bed isn't mucked out properly every day , then it will take longer.

I think I do 4 in 1.5 hours. Fed, turned out, with hay put out on floor in field. Stables, ( on Aubiose) water, nets done, ready for bringing in. Does depend how stinky they are.
