How many horses do you have? And what for?

Ok so Im on the verge of saying yes to another horse (well 'pony' ).
I have a 14.1 cob and a little dartmoor on loan as her companion at the moment.
Trouble is Iv grown to love the dartmoor and I simply don't want to/couldn't bear to give him back. (The home he came from was not ideal by a long shot)

So...In theory I would end up with 2 to ride, and the dartmoor as the ever scoffing companion/field ornament. (Hes in his thirties so literally just potters around in the field)

Both are gypsy cobs, live out 24/7, minimal feed just hay really, in terms of 'looking after' fairly straightforward.

I always thought Id not cope having an extra one, let alone 2.
But also in reality I know that the old boy wont be here forever :( and would be nice to have the younger one for my mare when hes no longer with us.

How many do you all have and what purpose do they serve?!

My 21 year old mare who thinks she is two.....she hacks/schools and goes on sponsored rides

My 14 yr old WB who we were going to restart but have retired due to ring diagnosed with KS she will be with us till the end

My sisters 13 yr tb who she plans to compete on when he is better and his retraining is complete

And my brothers 18 yr old appy who was an all rounder xc/sj/dressage/sponsored rides and hacking before he had lami but he is now a hacking and hopefully in the summer back to dressage
 
I have one that I ride, one on loan and a companion (that I look after for a charity). Sounds odd that I loan one out and loan one in, but I had the companion for a retired oldie (who's sadly no longer with us) and when he went over the rainbow bridge I couldn't consider giving the companion back - but with a 2 year old son and second one on the way three was tricky so I loaned out the rideable one.

One retired 14hh mare, 31 years. Easiest thing in the world to look after! :)

One tbx mare, 15.2 and 14 years old. She has had winter off as when I got her she had just been left to rot in a field. Planning on bringing her back into work when we mobe yards, basicly only hacked on her. She is a lot harder to look after and is fussy with everything but I love her.

1 youngster ready for backing this summer
1 ex race companion

I have time to ride 2, but it will be a struggle with 3 once youngster is backed so I will be looking to sell her a little sooner/ less established than I would have done if I hadn't bought a second eventer. I try to either ride one straight after the other, or ride one after mucking out in the morning and the other before bedding down in the evening rather than in the middle of the day so it doesn't eat into your day so much :)

The oldie is so easy its like hes not even there. He simply wants feeding and a quick groom and hes off again!
The other 2 are just happy hacking cobs so theres no pressure to ride all the time, like you say if I do one morning then one evening once its light thatll make it easier.

1 11 year old 14.2 arab mare who is my new, exciting endurance propsect.

I don't really have time or funds for more as I have a ridiculously full-on full time job.
 
I have two

An 11 year old TB mare who's main purpose in life is to look stunning and spend my salary for me on vets fees -every time I start getting somewhere with her ridden work something goes wrong!

A rising 4 year old New Forest x cob who is really too small for me and her aim in life is to get as much food inside her as she possibly can.....

Riding...what's that?

First in was a yearling section A I thought I'd break for my daughter in the future.

Well you can't just have one so when I saw my childhood dream pony a 13.1 palomino at a bargain price I thought I could bring that one on for daughter too, and have fun ride and leading her on the sec A down the line.

At this point I'd been out of horses for ten years. Had no interest other than daughter was keen and enjoying riding a Shetland we had on loan although he was really grumpy and she couldn't handle him at all.

I started riding the 13.1 and lo and behold found myself wanting to ride her every day for hours at a time and take her to competitions etc. however, I am nearly 5ft8 and I felt this was ludicrous :o

Enter horse 4. 14.1 4yr old paint horse in my sig.

Then the Shetland died :(

Enter pony 4b. Mini Shetland, never been ridden just a pet until we got him at the beginning of this year. He has turned out to be a total superstar and brought my daughter on leaps and bounds (including learning to fall off!) so despite not really needing 4, I don't regret having any of them. Will back the sec A at the end of the summer ready for daughter to start riding this time next year.

Went for our first ride and lead today (13.1 and mini Shet) :)

I have 2....
Comanche is a 5 yo ID x Sport Horse...he is coming back into work at the end of next month. He was bought to jump.

Jester is a rising 3 yo ISH x WB who was bought as a project but fell in love so going to wait and see. Would love to jump him but he has extremely beautiful paces sooooo maybe dabble in a bit of dressage...???
 
I have 3. I don't even ride them! I just like to be outside and around them grooming etc. I do love working with youngstock though - it's just the riding I don't like!!

1x 28yr old connie x tb, who I ride once a week normally but havent been out for a few months, due to having a lump removed and recently the weather, hopefully I will get out on her tomorrow if its not too horrid out!

1x rising 3 connie x tb, who I am hoping to back at the end of this summer, just lightly, then start properly this time next year.

1x mini shettie (cow) as a companion!
 
personally, I have two - three if you count my dad's.

B, 7, 17.1 ISH. he's just started doing BSJ and is jumping discovery although I suspect he's finding it a bit small.

J - 22, 16.2 KWPN, no longer allowed to jump due to injury and now on loan to someone who also can't.
T - 13, 16.3 KWPN. was competing at 1.20 overseas but now bring brought back into work after a bout of laminitis. the plan is to do some clear rounds before aiming for a 1m open around April.

a 14yr 15hh connemara who is used as a general allrounder have had him for 9 years

and a 15yr 16.2hh hannoverian x ish who evented up to advanced but now show jumps and hacks out.

1 x 21 year old 15hh cob who is a quiet happy hacker and then more of a bucking broncho on sponsored rides:rolleyes:

1 x 23 year old 12hh brat pony who I bought for a £1 as he was best friends with cob and was kicked out of 4 loan homes (so essentially a pity buy):eek: An expensive field ornament however I do enjoy lunging and walking him out and taking him to fancy dress shows:D Also gets dragged along when riding cob.

Both ridiculously drain my bank account, have both enjoyed a retired winter thanks to the hideous weather, lack of light blah blah blah. Still, they don't care if they do any work so I feel less guilty about them having a slobbish winter off:o
 
I have a 13.3 13yr old haffy that I just hack, fun rides & bit of jumping with as he not the easiest.

I also have a 14.2 rising 6yr old that I am currently schooling & hacking, but plan to have as my alrounder to do bit of jumping, xc & fun rides with. My mum also has a 14.2 cob that isa happy hacker :)
 
I look after three , two of which are mine.

1) 14.2hh 10 year old native connie type mare- used for unaff showjumping and hacking- take her round the XC courses and teach friends on her. Great fun little pony love her to bits :)
2) 15.2hh 8 year old ISH . 'project to sell on' (as far as my dad is aware ;) ) do pretty much the same with him. Unaff SJ, lots of schooling because he's awesome at it! so probably try some low level eventing in the spring/summer. Take him round XC and stuff :)
3) Not mine, but look after him the same amount as my own two. 13 year old 14hh Connemara. Just hack and bits of schooling with him.

I can easily fill up 12 hours with these three if I want to when they are coming in at night and all being ridden- however they can happily live out and if need be (only really due to injury) can go for weeks without being ridden and be perfectly fine. I love being kept busy !
 
21 year old l/w cob, had him for 16 years, he hacks, a friend also rides him, winter is tough and I think he's been out seven times in three months, not that he cares! He's 14.3hh.

Rising four year old gelding, about 15hh, I adore him. He'll be backed this spring, the plan is that he will replace Harl as my riding horse, I hope to have him for life.

Rising three year old, cousin to the four year old, I was suckered into buying him in September - aiming to spend a fair amount of time with him early spring, pony him off Harl, introduce bridle, saddle, rugs etc etc, lean over, advertise him for sale late spring. He's very sweet, and reminds me of the ponies I knew as a kid, cheeky, smart, wants to be your best buddy etc etc. He and the next one broke into the chicken pen yesterday - Peter jumped back out over a bank and 3foot wire only fence!! He's going to make 14.2hh tops.

Rising two year old Hannoverian/ISH x Knabstrupper gelding, going to be about 16hh, currently just being a baby horse - he's up for sale too!!

Nothing at all wrong with the youngest two - but common sense tells me that two horses will be much more enjoyable than four, and Tinner and Harl have my heart!
 
Three horses

Khan 14.1hh gelding who is my first pony, hes semi-retired now.

Maddie 16hh mare she's my main riding horse now.

Apache 11hh was my sister's pony back when she was like 10. We'd owned from when he was 2 and a half, sold him in 2010 and then a friend came across him last may and the new owners weren't getting on with him and I ended up buying him back because he had been in 3 homes within 18months. He will be kept and ridden lightly by myself.
 
I own 2:

My gorgeous old boy, Palamion cob, 18 years old, is out on loan to a family friend as a companion to their Welsh as he had to be retired last year due to tendon injury. He is exceptionally happy in his new home. :)

My newbie is a 15.2 Arab x Friesian black gelding, 8 years old, absolutely gorgeous!
 
14.2 connie x tb, nearly 24, had her 22yrs since I was 10. Original purpose was comp pony & general allrounder, but mainly jumped. These days I still ride her, but her main purpose is just being her arrogant, wonderful self, & being a schoolmistress.
Rising 6, mini x ?, 11.1 pony. Bought as a sympathy vote yearling, with absolutely no purpose in mind. Now daughters pony, becoming a nice little allrounder 2nd pony type. Will probably break to drive when outgrown, possibly when daughter gets too leggy for normal riding she will do games on her.

Haha :D not sure that I'm a 'wonderful lady' but I have ArabianGem's lovely PBA, one 15hh cob mare, 14yrs, and my 6 yr old TB lunatic. I mainly happy hack but am planning to do a bit of low level endurance and some local jumping and x country, possibly some Trec/Western Trail. Just for fun, I don't compete seriously these days! :)
