We have 13 ranging from a tiny DHP to a 17hh TBx. We had our own land when we got most of them and had loads of room, many were sympathy buys from auction, our situation has changed and it is hard work now but they are all loved and cared for properly. We are just hanging in waiting for our situation to sort out again.
I've got 3
1) my old and now permeantly retired due to Arthritis in his hocks, GP horse.
2) 6 YO sec A who is now going to be a driving pony and a riding pony if my son ever fancies riding..
3) MY New boy who I've had for about 6 months Traddy Cob who is a total sweetheart... but the only one I ride now.
Meg and Penny are mine, and Juno is technically on loan, but has been for years so is kinda mine I guess. We did own her from 1991 til 1995, then got her back in 1999.
Penny is rising 1 and is doing the 'baby' thing growing up in the field!
Just the one, I work full time and wouldn't have time for more. I ride her most days as we have a flood lit school and hack out weekends and once during the week (I have an afternoon off - saved up my annual leave for the winter )
OK! So I'm still the only person between horses! Surely there must be more of us out there? I'm currently riding one of my friends geldings as she has two to exercise.
BTW, those of you with more than five, how and why? I struggle to afford one, surely you must be professionals?
I have 8 ponies ranging from 6 months-27yrs old, smallest is a 32 inch mini Shettie, biggest is a 14.1hh mini TB type I show them but am not a professional, I keep them at home so no big livery bills, they were all bought very cheaply, the cheapest was 32gns, most expensive £500
Three whole ones:
One TBxWelsh D who is my riding horse, an absolute star
One semi-retired, crippled buckskin Welsh Cob used as a very light hack
Small useless ginger pony who is a very high mantainance companion to the above.
Three halves a horse too:
Half of a Welsh C stallion (the middle half, front end bites back end kicks)
Half a ISH, brought as a project horse, still unbroken but has the potential to show out county level.
Half a TBxWB, amazing jump, 5 years old, unbroken was BOGOF with the above, sweet horse though.
Ideally I need to get rid of the three projects though.
Two, a welsh sec d who isnt ridden as i she needs re-backing, but im in no rush to as she has a home for life with me
And a welsh sec a, who im planning to show inhand
When I came in the door this evening I had 10 - of my own.
Hopefully tomorrow, if I don't answer my cell then I will still have 10, if I answer the phone I will probably have at least 3 more.
The population is usually stable at about 9 (two of those are in foal) depends what is up at the stockyards on any given day though.
it seems i'm not the only one who's a sucker for a sad story !!
i have 6 at present, with one cooking, hopefully he/she is already sold
1 28 year old BWB mare - had since she was 3, retired
1 20 year old BWB/Anglo arab gelding - her son, now retired
1 just turned 4 year old TB/Cob gelding, recently broken and hacking nicely
1 just turning 5 andalusian, now broodmare due to field injury, due mid may
2 mini shetlands, rescued as mare with 3 month foal at foot, now 7 and 10, drive me mad but couldnt part with them, should have a label on them, can open feedroom door despite 2 catches, even open the feedbins if given enough time !!!!!
had just two 7 years ago, brought my own land and just kept collecting for a time. was meant to stop at 3 but when andy got hurt in field decided to buy a riding horse, hence the 4 year old.
costs are kept down by not having livery to pay for, making my own hayledge and looking for the best deals with bedding / feed etc, then lots of hard work, and the obligatory well paid job
i am sure how ever many we all have, we love them all to bits and will do without to make sure they have the best care
