Prompted by another thread, how many of you have had a horse stolen, not someone you've heard of having had one stolen and not put out on loan and disappeared (although I do agree this absolutely is theft!) but interested in how many people have got up one morning and found the field one short !

My theory is that actual, come in the middle of the night box up and disappear, theft is pretty rare - but maybe all the people I know are just really lucky.

My neighbour, who I know well did have a tiny Shetland stolen, he was recovered by her from a location used by our friends with no fixed abode and he did have a habit of getting out on the road and would easily have fitted into a transit van so a theft of opportunity not complex planning

I saw that point in the other thread. I think its a very interesting question, I'll be watching this thread with interest. Personally I haven't nor do I know of anyone in my area who has ever had a horse stolen. I'm in East Yorkshire.

I had my horse Toby stolen from his field. The thieves cut the fence and took him. I have searched for him for 8 years now, but no sign of him.

Aww last two posters how sad. I know if our Connie was stolen I too would never give up searching for him. Funnily enough as I was padlocking gates up this evening that thought crossed my mind as he lives out 24/7 even though it is like Fort Knox to get into! I take comfort in the fact that even if they got in it would be very hard to get him out over 6ft padlocked steel gate but then my mind works overtime and I think of someone getting in and hurting him!

Really hope you find out one day what happened, it's the not knowing I think that's worse than actually knowing they are dead coz at least then can you can move on:-(

Lynnwalker and scotlass - really sorry for your loss - people have no idea how personal they are to lose!

If you don't mind would you share some details so perhaps others can learn from your nasty situations? Were they really valuable competition horses or easy to put in a transit shetlands from a livery yard or private yard, in the day or over night? etc.

I can honestly say it destroyed me .. to the point that I made an attempt on my life (which also struck a chord with me on another thread on the forum). I still struggle to talk about it, but he is (was) a competition horse

I have, two of them together, whilst on a large Estate where we were working for two days. They were taken between 8pm and 7am. Both work in harness and under saddle. They are freezemarked and I truly believe were found within twelve hours due to them. Most definately stolen. Taken on foot.

Not sure I would handle it, I would never give up looking for my 2, loosing B1 would kill me. I feel so bad for those who have lost x

I had two stolen from a field overnight. Fortunately they were found in the early hours of the morning on a road - no accident was caused and they were unharmed.

We had followed the hoof prints from the field - padlock had been cut off and they had been taken up an unused bridleways just by their field (the gate to it had been levered off its hinges as it wasn't possible to open it). The path ended in a layby - where we presumed they had parked their transport but neither horse would load into a trailer so we assume that the thieves gave up and just abandoned them.

Several years ago 3 of mine where almost stolen. I left the yard, horse in stables, kick bolts down. Sorted. 1 hour later my neighbour called, her dog had spotted someone at my yard. By this time it was about 8pm and dark. Hubby and I drove straight there. We arrived to find head collars on the mares only, and kick bbolts up. Phoned the police. Within 10 mins a car came and stopped right by the yard and flashed it's lights into the yard. Saw us, and drove off at speed. Police arrived seconds later, chased and caught them several miles up the road. They had no evidence to charge them, but did say they where known to them.
We where very lucky, if it wasn't for my neighbour we would have lost ours.

CCTV and alarm system was installed afterwards. now we have them at home, and feel much more secure.

We will never forget that night.

Yaaay clever horses !

We once had a pony stolen from from the field. She was out with 4 others one of which had foaled the evening prior. We searched the field thinking the mare who had foaled had injured this mare as she was very foal proud. We found the fence down and immediately went to the local auctions as it was Saturday. We walked in to find our pony ticketed up lot 1. I went straight to he office and demanded to know who had put her in the auction. The owner of the auction who I knew well told me it was him who owned lot 1. It was then that I informed him that she had been stolen from our field sometime overnight, he then went on to say that some blokes had led her through the auction gates and he had bought her from them for £140. I called the police and got my mum to bring her passport over. The auction owner said he wouldn't have given her up so easily if she hadn't been mine as he bought her in good faith!! Charming.

I revisited the sale a few weeks later (I used to go every week) the auction owner told me I owed him money as he lost £140 on my pony, I've never graced his sale again and refuse to as long as he is ever anything to do with it.

Pony went to live with a friend and is still there ooh must be at least 12 years ago, thieves were identified, vehicle reg and home address given to police, no action taken!!!! Ridiculous.

Off the top of my head i know 3 people who have had them out right stolen. Two miniatures, one a mare in foal, the other a foal. Horse was a heinz, and not even a show horse type just a bog standard pet horse.
