How many rugs?

Hunter clipped IDxTB has on a 250g full neck TO while turned out, and YO has probably put hiw LW full neck TO underneath. At night he's in a 250g full neck stable rug with 110g (also full neck) stable rug over the top. Was a bit too warm under that TBH as well! Horses can keep themselves warmer than we give them credit for as long as they have enough to eat

Do you mean you have two rugs on your horse, a heavy weight AND and medium weight Marinita? My WB mare who is like a TB anyway has a HW turnout on ( 350g) and she has a mw stable rug at night with a neck cover. My Con x TB only ever wears a mw turnout and a mw stable. Neither of them are clipped though.
 
D is wearing a hw with neck at the moment. She has a blanket clip but it's coming back through again and the unclipped bits are very hairy.
 
29 yr old unclipped TBx is wearing a HW Rhino turnout during the day (370g with neck cover). At night (stabled) she's wearing a summer sheet with lightweight poly on top, and leg warmers on her back legs. She's been plenty warm enough so far, but forecast for -10 tonight so will be stepping up to her heavy weight in the stable tonight!
 
My lot are fully clipped and have lightweight bottom rugs, a quilt under rug that goes up the neck and HW top rug, and bandages.
 
Scoob's just got his middle/light weight turnout on, no neck or anything.

I felt really sorry for him, but the YO said "he's not cold, trust me" and when I felt him he's actually perfectly warm.

He is a hairy beast though - he was fully clipped a couple of months ago, but you wouldn't guess it now! And his mane is keeping one side of his neck toasty warm.

The less hardy ponies are more well-wrapped - the old Arab x is wearing two m/w rugs, those who are clipped are also layered. The rest are just in h/w turnouts, most with necks. Scoobs is definitely the least covered, but he doesn't mind.
 
I'm surprised that some of your horses can stand up with the amount of rugs they have on! Personally I think too many people over rug their horses! Modern rugs are designed to be lightweight but warm and that's why they come in different togs so you dont have to put so many on! I know all horses are different but for goodness sake a HW, a LW and a fleece all at once!

She had her HW stable rug on last night as it was ICY!
 
My nearly 29 yo has 400g Duo on during day, 350g WB combo stable at night with his little string vest underneath (old cooler). When it's really cold he has his leg warmers on all round as he gets a bit stiff and has old knee injury.

I like him to be warm enough but not overdo it. It's worse for a horse to be too hot than a little on the chilly side. I'd rather slightly under rug and feed more hay.

There are some people on my yard that put on two heavy weight rugs, horse can hardly move and they feed hardly any hay - that, in my opinion is the wrong way round.........
 
My mare had colic last night and was standing out in a freezing field, got her a stable for the winter now

last night she was in with a woolen blanket, thermatex, quilt and her HW with neck rug.........yes i know 4 rugs!!!! BUT she wasnt well and she was cold. Today shes much better, now in with woolen blanket, thermatex and a LW quilt.
Shes a TB who has recently lost weight and coindition and she feels the cold

if it goes really cold again tonight - ie -3 (-6 last night) then will put on her HW too. Waiting for her MW stable quilt to come
 
30yo tb living out, unclipped - HW (300g) with neck TO
12yo tb living out, hunter clipped - MW (200g) with neck TO, 150g quilt underneath.

I may put Monty's (old boy) fleece underneath or maybe his light under rug if he seems cold. They are both out with loads of hay though and I want to save something for January when it's really cold!
 
Part-clipped TB with non-fluffy hairy bits:

In at night: 100g full neck under rug with 200g full neck stable rug on top.

Out by day: 360g full neck.

Might take the 200g full-neck stable rug off and replace with 360g no-neck stable rug tonight, as it says minus 6 tonight and I'm worried he'll be chilly.
 
The TB is in a LW stable rug with a MW turnout rug with neck over the top. He is fully clipped and has ad lib hay- in all the time at the moment due to frozen fields.
 
welshie blanket clipped last week out in 200g turnout and quite happy. chaser clipped anglo out in the same though she might have a no fill neck if mum wants her clean.

in at night 300g rug for the anglo, 370 for the welshie.
 
i have a 17 year old idxtb, he has a hunter clip and is wareing a Hw duvet rug, with half neck a HW stable rug with a neck cover and a MW rug with a half neck. and he is toasty
 
Turned out in a lw but has a fleece lining and stabled with a lw. Think I might change to a mw stable rug tonight though as it supposed to be -5. Feel like I'm under rugging him as I'm used to being up on the freezing cold moors where he would be in a HW by now. I keep having to tell myself he is an unclipped welshie so is more than likely fine and it's just me thats cold!
 
I have a thin skinned arab who doesnt get fluffy and really feels the cold, she is in foal and has lost weight this winter and she wears:-

At Night- vest, fleece, mt under rug, rhino wug plus, heavy masta stable rug and thermatex leg wraps.

During day when out- vest, shires stormbreaker, mw amigo, heavy mt combo and snuggy hood head.

Currently on box rest at mo as now has mud fever and suspect strained check ligament from tramping in mud so she is wearing
-vest, fleece rug, fleece face and neck hood, mt under rug and masta regal rug plus bandages all round.

Her companion who stays in with her is a welsh b wears a waffle cooler and a heavy half neck nz day and night.

I rug my horses to keep them warm, the barn the stables are in is very cold and they cant move when stood in. My mare is very stressy hence companion that goes with her in field and shares her stable during the day if they stay in else she weaves and box walks and drops a lot of weight.
Luckily my horses are the only diy's on a part and full yard so am blessed to be able to keep myself to myself and mostly avoid the other owners and staff so dont get people interfering and telling me that my horses wear too many rugs when it is nothing to do with them!
 
450g PE with full neck TO.

Last night a fleece, a LW full neck 150g amigo stable with a 250g on top (no neck).

She's clipped and I only added the fleece last night as the wind was whistling straight into her stable and she was cool not warm... probably not helped that she'd obviously been running around in the mud as she was half covered and damp

Thinking of putting her in her fleece lined monster (masta ballistic 480g) rug tonight, it used to be her TO until I got her her premier equine TO. So she'll be in 1 rug with a neck cover at night.

And no, she isn't over rugged, she's not hot..... just comfortably warm... I know my YM would soon tell me if she was hot plus she doesn't sweat up...

It gives them some good exercise... weight lifting.. anyhoo my girls 3 rugs of last night do not weigh HALF of what the monster masta rug does... hence why I try not to use it, my YM is dinky and she hates the thing !!

My blanket clipped WB is out 24/7 and refused to come in last night despite the snow so he had a hot feed and is wearing a 150g stable rug with a 300g turnout with neck. Its well below freezing and metcheck says it will feel like -8 tonight brrrrr! When the snow stops he will just have a fleece under his t/o if that.
 
TB-fully clipped and in full work, is in 2 x 350 rugs, one with a full neck and a thermatex whether in or out.

ISH-fully clipped-1 x 350 normal neck, 1 x 450 full neck, thermatex.

shetland-unclipped-full neck 350g with lightweight underneath when out, at night has a thermatex, wool blanket and stable rug.

native X pony-fully clipped, has 2x 350 full neck rugs plus a 120gm under rug on when in, and another 350g full neck on top when out.
 
now each to their own but this is where I get stuck

why does an unclipped shetland need a 350g rug on plus a lightweight so guessing an extra 100g
