horse going to camp next week and using shavings /bedmax as she eats straw.at home we have rubber matting so only a small bed but at camp floor is concrete.how many bales will i need to make a good deep bed as they will be in 24hrs apart from ridden 2x daily

Blimey, this could get expensive! Is it for a week's stay? Depends if you want/need to cover the whole floor, rather than just say, the back 2/3rds. And if you want it deep enough to be cosy or just enough to absorb pee/poo and prevent capped hocks. If you want the whole floor covered to a depth of say 3 inches, you'll be looking at 6 bales at least. At £8 a bale, that's almost £50 just for one week - deoending on how long ned is there, you'd probably need one bale each additional week, and you can't take the clean stuff home with you at the end!

Ours used to always have paper for camp. Its far cheaper ( we had our own so free for us) and easier to bed down in the short term. We actually had to use paper as camp was at the local racetrack.

Hi debs

Can you take up some of your rubber matting and take it with you? That's what I was going to do if T took Toby and then just put a few shavings on. But as she's now taking Manni he can go on the straw. I was planning to lay the mats in the middle of the stable and not worry too much about the edges - filling in with some shavings.

What about using the straw but spraying it with disinfectant to stop her eating it?

Also, if you do take shavings don't foget to save your bags so you can take some of the clean stuff home with you - I am always amazed at the end of camp how much 'good' shavings are on the muck heap - what a waste!

Luckily Our bedding is always provided when we go to camp but in answer to your question I would use 5 bales of shaving to start a bed off.

Are you able to take the clean shavings home with you when you leave?

My daughter is going to the same camp as debsflo's daughter.

Our PC do provide bedding for free - straw. But if you want anything different then you have to take it yourself.

Ahh right, that explains it then

My Ponio will eat her straw as well so we are spraying it with Cribbing Spray and giving her a bigger hay net then usual to stop her Box walking /eating the straw!

a lot of camps now provide shavings instead which would be better for us.it is expensive not to mention a pain but dont want to risk colic or coughs .will have to think about taking matting its just the logistics of lifting them and cleaning them to bring.
