How many times am I going to have to clip this year?! I have already clipped her twice this year and in another week or so is going to need her 3rd! :( - She is well rugged and fed, so cannot be cold but her coat still proceeds to grow at a ridiculous rate!

How many times have you all clipped so far this year? Her first clip was at the beginning on November.
 
Looking at number 3. However as we are expecting a really cold snap and work/turnout could well be restricted I am holding back on that one. Knowing my luck I will clip out and then have a horse standing in all the time. My old is a lovely lady. I have not bothered clipping her but she has hardly grown any coat at all.
 
Kind of twice. Mine were out 24/7 so just had low chasers early Nov. Then when they came in at night changed to full clips about a week ago, but not much regrowth where the chaser was. Will prob need redoing in a few weeks.
 
I will do my second clip over xmas, then I predict it will snow and freeze for at least a month as thats what has happened the last two times :cool:
 
The earlier you clip, the more you're going to have to do it. A first clip for me would be no earlier than the end of November - with another one done in January. (Unless the horse was hunting, and then of course it would be done much earlier, and I'd expect to have to clip about 4 times in total).
 
Yes, the earlier you start the more you do... but you would only clip earlier if you needed to surely?
My mare is already growing a thick coat by end of August and it doesn't stop until January, plus then the cat hairs need taking off after that.
If I didn't clip her until November she would be a sticky hot mess for 2 months of the year :D
 
One of the racers will get his 4th in a few days and most are on their 3rd but we keep them as trimmed as possible for the work they do and the fact that they race. I have done 65clips this year so far which isn't bad considering.

This! Only clipped mine on Saturday (1st of December) He lives out but is a chunky monkey and is in the heaviest Premier Equine Rug available.

He got a sort of High Chasery-thing clip...

Only clipped him because he was getting too sweaty in a 45 minute schooling session.
 
I've clipped my hairy ID x mare twice and she looks like a yeti again, she is wearing a heavy winter rug yet her coat will not stop growing. Glad I'm not the only one in this boat though :D

Worried I'd taken too much off, but the rug we've gotten him is AMAZINGLY warm. He needed that much off, he was sweating on the neck through his belly. A classic chaser wasn't enough, but a blanket was too much as we wanted him to keep his bum on... so took a deep breath and went from flank to face.

Think he looks rather dashing... if you excuse the pun lol.

I'm with you - weather forecast for 3rd week in December is looking really bad ..... even down South! I want to go hunting boxing day though so will probably clip couple of days before.
 
I never need to clip more than 2 - 3 times. My mare has the same clip as yours, Jenni. It's my favourite. Rugging and weather makes no difference to how much coat a horse will grow as it is totally dependent on the light. The only thing that a clipped horse being too cold will influence, is the growth of guard hairs, making for an unsightly prickly appearance. This is the only part of the coat that is influenced by temperature.
 
Talking of guard hairs - I saw a really interesting video on horse hero. It was the chief groom at Badminton House. He used (and still uses) a flame to burn off the guard hairs from hunters to tidy them up. Looks really dramatic and you would have thought the horses would freak but they don't seem to mind at all!
 
Surely it does actually depend on your beast too, F is concerned every year that I might throw him back on a welsh hillside and starts growing end of August if I'm lucky ;). I don't mind clipping early and having to clip as many times as necessary over the winter to keep him comfortable for whatever his current level of work is. Mums anglo needs much less clipping ;)
 
Atleast im not in this boat on my own! She has been fully clipped the past 2 times, but may go for a blanket the next time round looking at the weather report... But then I dont know if i trust it! Every winter seems to be ' The harshest winter since time began!'

Thanks Wagtail - To be honest, I didnt know their coat depended on light! You learn something everyday.

Yes, apparently you can stave off the winter coat by keeping them in brightly lit barns. Mind you, I think I'd rather clip than waste all that electricity.
 
Unfortunately the light trick doesn't work on Shetlands :-/ I tried on 2 of mine - stable rug and a dayglo bulb from 6am til 10pm every single day from the start of August onwards. I gave up in September when they had yeti like coats anyway - bloomin creatures!!
 
Out of the two I ride, one has been clipped once and is still okay but the other one has been clipped twice already and is looking like a yak already! They're both TB's, both out during the day and in at night. We don't want to have to clip the yak again already but he gets very sweaty and I feel so bad for him.
