For one horse.
Trying to get proper winter sorted for my new horse. Currently out at night, but weather will probably change the routine sooner rather than later.
Different weights/ neck covers.... it's all changed since I last had a horse in work during the winter!

My ridden horse has 2 light weights, a 50g, 100g and 250g all with removable necks and loops for liners. This is probably less than any of my others had but figure it means I can have or make up any weight and have a replacement of any weight.

Mines are unclipped, for the thin coated ones I have 2 turnouts each, a no fill and a 200g. I have 2 or 3 stable rugs and a cooler/cotton sheet that can go under the no fill if needed (I only ever use 1 rug under the no fill, I don't layer them up).
I don't use necks as I find they get too warm underneath.

Below with detachable neck

Rain sheet
100g
250g

Combo (dont use much)
200g

I also have the below liners

50g (on order)
100g
200g

Once we need 200g he stays in the 100g liner with the 100g over the top and when it really drops he just swaps the 100g outer for either the 200g or 250g outer.

I have ordered the 50g liner as i have found this past week he needs something in between the rain sheet and 100g
He is fully clipped and normally a cold horse but going into the colder weather this year is staying warm.

Mine all live in their turnouts unless feilds are shut then he has the 100g and 200g (with detachable neck)

Peggy has a 100g with a massive rip along the side so bought a no full which she did exactly the same with. Also has a 220g half neck and a 200g full neck. All her rugs are ancient but so is she so don’t really want to replace any if I can. That sounds harsh ?

Tali has a no fill, a 200g with detachable neck and a 220g half neck. She may need a insulator or heavier full neck but will see how we get on.

Turn our rug wise I own a 0g and a 50g. Both with detachable neck covers that I've never used.

A couple more stable rugs: 2 x Thermatex coolers, 1 thinner waffle cooler and a (probably 50g) stable rug I've only ever needed to use once.

He's a partially clipped native that I don't really rug unless weather is particularly vile, I'm trying to keep him clean for a mid week lesson/an outing at the weekend or he's gotten sweaty working and just needs a wicking rug to stop him getting a chill.

I have one each for three of them and none for the others. Less hardy TB had one of each weight when she was in ridden work.

One 0g rain sheet and one 100g with detachahle neck (with optional 100g/200g liners).

Fully clipped ISH in full work and daily turnout unless weather absolutely dire.

He basically lives in them unless we are competing. His only other rugs are a fleece, a medium stable rug and a fly rug.

Clipped (hunter clip) Connemaras, living out full time in a windy area, in work, each have:

1 x no fill
1x medium weight (100g-150g)
(plus a no-fill neck cover that attaches to either of the above)
1x heavy weight (200g-250g)

The escape artist also has 1 x high-neck medium weight as he can't be trusted with a hood very often as he uses it to push the electric fencing down. They are good doers and I have to restrict grazing year-round, including through the winter, so they seem to have evolved to heat themselves effectively.

I have only had to use the heavy-weight rugs maybe 10 days in total since I bought them in 2009, they haven't been needed at all the last few winters. I live in the south/south west so the winters aren't harsh; there were several nights where it dropped to -5c last winter but no snow, and the cold spells were interspersed with mild weather. We mainly get lots of rain and wind.

I have an unreasonable amount of rugs, especially as my two are both 6ft so very easy to collect!

Have just bought the DefenceX with liner system because it seemed cheaper than getting all my other rugs washed ? 50g outer with detachable neck, 100g and 300g liners. I'll probably buy 200g liner in addition. Was a total bargain though as bought that, a thermatex dupe quarter sheet and thermatex dupe cooler for £210...so I was sold.

To answer the question properly, I probably have 40 or so rugs across both horses. Fly rugs, Summer sheets, fleeces, lw, mw, hw....but only 1 100g stable rug between them ?

I have a high neck no fill turnout rug. Very basic. Just for keeping dry if we get extended periods of rain and wind when she doesn't have her winter coat or if I want to keep her clean-ish for riding.

Two 0gs for summer.
One fly-rug.
One Mediumweight half-neck.
(I layer stable rugs underneath the medium weight when it gets really cold)
She also has mud boots for winter

I've found she likes it on in the morning when it's cold and then likes an hour or two with the sun on her back in Winter.
Now's she's not in work and isn't clipped she's just nakey 24/7.

two, weatherbeatas one 50gm with detachable no fill neck and a no fill. Then 50gm, 100gm, 150gm, 200gm, 250gm, 300gm and 400gm liners. I find liners so much better. They are light, easy to wash and fold down to store easily. I have them all in bags with the weight on and just grab the one I want

Fly sheets, 2 that are in regular use.
One 50/50 (half fly sheet and half waterproof)
One 50g
One 200g
One 400g

I also have a couple of liners that fit all proper turnouts, and 2 necks.

TBF, the 400g was one I had already so doesn't really count.

Each of mine has a no fill, a 100g and a 200g. Over the years I’ve accumulated a standard neck and combo neck version of each (probably wouldn’t be so fussed about the combo necks except they’re both grey!) I’ve never needed anything heavier.

I have far too many rugs, I tend to make an inventory of winter rugs in the spring, and buy new ones in the sales - this saves a lot. If I change the question from 'how many do I have', to 'how many do I need' the answer would probably be:

Rainsheet with 'netting' inside
50 g
100 g
200 g

I do have 300 g rugs, I seldom use them, and could probably make do with a fleece under, but I like to have them, and for old lady pony I would say that I probably do need them. I also have, and use often, the fleece lined rugs which are very useful for Autumn.

I have all without necks or with detachable necks. For the ones without their own detachable necks I have the Decathalon ones in 0 and 200 g fill and I have 'D-rings' sewn on in the proper places on the rugs to enable them to be attached. Not sure if this would be a good idea if they were out 24 hours in the rain, but where I am the cold is more of an issue than the rain, and they are inside with rugs hung overnight in a heated room to dry. So far adding the D-rings does not seem to have allowed them to become wet inside.

The only rug that I can say was a complete waste of money was a heavyweight 450g which has never been used.

Homey had 3 x LW turnouts, 1 MW and 1 HW.

He normally had a full clip.

4 of them are rambos 1 a rhino. 1 LW was a rambo with a liner system and he used to wear that with 100g liner underneath mainly. 3 are wug style.

The liner system I think is the way to go buy one good quality rambo and then use the liners. I had him for 15 years and the rambos really are still in good condition and hopefully when I get a another new forest will fit them too.

I have 3 Rambo Duos. One as a 100g (no liner) , one as a 200g (100g liner) and one set up as a 400g (300g liner). I know, it seems extravagant but the first two are old and tatty, I was gonna Chuck but, even after 18 years of use, they’re still waterproof so i decided to use all 3 so I don’t have to faff with changing liners.

I also have a couple of 50g turnouts - they’re being used now - while it wet but still quite warm.

Don’t bother with no fill rugs - they’re never waterproof in heavy rain and if it’s light rain or just the occasional heavy showers… well, she has a field shelter ?

1 x no fill with detachable neck - you can buy different liners to attach to it that go underneath so I might do this as it’s a great rug and fits him really well.
1 x 100g combo
2 x 200g combo
1 x 350g combo
1 x waterproof fly sheet

1 x no fill, 1 x 50g & 1x 100g with detachable neck covers, 1 x 100g combo. I then use liners underneath as needed.
