Hi there,
I'm just doing a bit of market research at the moment as I'm looking to loan (and possibly buy) my first horse later in the year (3 or so months from now). I'm just finalising the maths side of things and am just wondering how much people are paying for livery (DIY or grass - wouldn't want anything more than that!)?

And equally, how much are you all paying, say on a monthly basis, for the full deal - livery/rent + hay + feed + farrier + insurance, etc....

Just wanting to confirm I've not massively underestimated anything before I take the plunge!

I pay £15 a week for stable and grass and then buy hay and bedding from the yard;
usually 1 bale of hay a week at £3.25
and Bedding is ecoflax (alternative to shavings) is £6.75 every couple of weeks.
Usually my weekly bill is around £22.
Then I get through a bag of feed every 3-4 weeks at £11 and my insurance is £15 a month. So each month its around £121.

Thought I best point out that my yard is one of the best value around though! I know a yard about 10 minutes away that would have been around £50 a week DIY with bedding and hay so they do vary ALOT.

Thanks for that! That is the sort of figure I was working on (relief!). I am finding that about livery yrds - despite being "DIY" I'm finding some charging extra for services that isn't "DIY" at all and I'd rather they didn't do (but they're supposedly compulsory...) All rather odd!

I've put up a post asking if anyone knows of any DIY or even just grass liveries anywhere near me but sadly no replies to that post yet! I see some ads going up in my local tack shops and farm stores!!

My nearst livery charges £60/week for DIY and all you get for that is obviously the grazing and use of a stable and use of an outdoor menage but that is it - for £60/week??!! Scary!
 
I know! It's ridiculou what some yards charge! I was very lucky to find such a friendly yard that doesn't cost the earth but heard about it from word of mouth.

Crikey i've got the wrong horse!! No livery costs as keep at home but my 16.2h ID x goes through about 5 bales of hay a week @ £3.00 a bale and 2/3 bales of shavings @ £7.50 each. He is only on Hifi Lite at about a bag a month and a hand full of conditioning cubes so maybe 1/2 bag a month so hard feed = £18.00.

Think it depends allot on what horse you are buying but I have never managed to get through only one bale of hay with any horse, please tell me how it is done!!
 
Yes my sister keeps her horse on

20 a week for stable and indiv field
2 bales of hay a week ~£6 (3quid each)
1 straw a week ~£3.50 (she is also on rubber matting)
feed ~ hifi lasts about 1month £8
~pony nuts 1.5 bags a month (5.50 a bag) £8
~oil/carrots etc
farrier ~ 65 quid every 6 weeks
insurance ~ 40

and this is REALLY cheap with no added supplements and on cheapest feed. There are no extras like rugs needed.....

you need to consider physio twice a year (if not more) saddle fittings...vets fees

I keep my mare on full livery atm so she cost about 700 quid a month and this was unplanned as she had to have surgery and then needed rehab...i hadnt budgetted for that so be prepared! make sure you have a full vetting and dont trust that she might just have a sore back because of ill fitting saddle etc.

My horse is on DIY livery, currently stabled at night and out during the day but will switch to 24hr turnout in the summer.

I pay £26/week livery which includes 1 bale shavings - enough for me

Feed - hardly feed anything but £9 mix every 2 weeks and just started feeding speedibeet (£8 every 3 weeks I expect). And Redcell £10/month to top up vits and minerals

Hay - I'm paying £15 for a big bale which is lasting about 3 weeks at the moment but will go longer when she's out more

Farrier £55/6 weeks

Insurance ~£20/month I think

Dentist £35 annual
Jabs £40 ish annual (depends on how many of us split the call out)
Worming, say £15 every 3 months +/- worm counts
Physio/back check £45 annual unless there is a problem
Saddle reflocking £25-50 depending on how much needs doing
TO rug reproofing £15 each (I wash my own stable rugs cos I'm mean)

I *think* that's most of the routine stuff, but tbh I can easily double the expenditure if I included horse registration for competitions, entries, diesel, new tack blah blah blah, but that's all 'fun stuff' and could survive without it

full livery- inc. feed, hay and straw, put on the walker, put out etc. etc. etc! only £11 a day- i do him at the w/es so only £55 a week! not bad i think!
 
I pay £10 per week per horse (have 3) on grass livery.
Over winter I buy hay for in the field - usually approx £20 a week between them but depends on the weather (went through twice as much when we had snow).
I've never worked it out properly (probably should!) but think I pay approx £30 a month for feed for the three of them.
Farrier every 10 weeks £20 each (all barefoot atm).
Dentist every 6 months for the boys £50 each. Welsh mare has great teeth and is done every other year.
Vaccs around £40 each.
Worming probably averages at around £5 per month each.
Then there are numerous extras - saddles checked, physio, rugs cleaned etc which tend to be as they're needed but all add up over the year.
 
Part livery, all services but riding, I pay for hay/feed/bedding. £390 a month. Adding in shoes, insurance and other things, I spend about £600 a month.

In winter i would say it can be up to 300pounds a month, everything all in, from feed to farrier

In summer up to 200pounds

Sometimes i think you can add it all up but i find i seem to spend more some how! But i think the figures above are a good and true estimate
 
my horse is on DIY is the southwest..... ive just added up how much she has cost me each month and it worked out on average £280 pcm. The livery is fairly expensive as it has great facilitites and regular competitions.

I pay £26pw for stable/grazing and facilities
£10 pw for ad lib hay
£7 per bale for shavings
£60 for shoes

and includes other costs like vaccinations, physio, dentist, feed and supplements but does not include competitions, travel expenses, new tack or rugs

I'm pleased to see that (if I manage to actually find a grass livery or reasonably priced DIY livery yard), it'll work out about what I was expecting it to be. Hurrah! I'm very relieved about that! :-D

Still looking around for that livery yard though....!!
