How much did your horse/s cost? (what was your budget?)

Thorn my, Sec A was given to me by someone i used to loan a horse from.
He was 11.1hh, I'm 5ft 10 so obviously he was no good for me to ride so i showed him sucessfully until i was able to buy my own horse.

Fanta was bought as a yearling for £1800, my budget was £1500 and we had to travel from Sheffield to Southampton for her, so another £100 or so in diesel! Plus borrowed a friends trailer, had a blow out on the way home on the trailer so had to buy a tyre too!
 
I bought my boy for 400 advertised as a driving pony at 2, he wasn't what I was looking for at all but couldn't leave him as he was
Turned out that he was just about unhanded and had a lot of trust issues and had never seen grass!
But he's turning out to be a good little lad a year on
 
Well one of mine was free and then the youngster I recently got cost more than what I was initially wanting to spend on a horse, however I wanted him so much and really liked him as a foal and I had really liked his Dam (I rode her for her owners), so we ended up getting him at £2500.

But sometimes I dont think money is an issue if its something you really want and in my case he'll be with me all his life and hopefully be a horse of a lifetime. :)
 
Trixie - £750 2 years ago 15.2hh Cob x Arab coloured mare and the most genuine girl ever - Love her to bits. Budget £2000.

Willow - bought unseen as companion for T. £450 for a 13.2 then 2yr old wild Forest pony now just being backed and very easy happy little chap. Budget for companion pony £500.

Henna - Trixies little suprise for me ;0) Free apart from the £450 she cost me at 8 weeks old by slicing her heel open ........ Bless her. Will be about 16hh middle weight hunter type and is beautifully marked and very sweet , calm and kind. Budget 0 !!

As for what they are worth - As I always say something is only ever worth what someone is willing to pay for it. To me they are priceless and I hope never to have to sell any of them.

I always try 5 before I buy as a general rule ;0)
 
Old lady was £2.5K as an unbacked 4yo which was a lot at the time but she proved to be more than worth it as she evented then went on to compete up to Inter I level in affiliated dressage and has produced three top quality foals.

My little orlov was £1.2K as a green but backed 4yo, she went to PSG level and is in foal with her first, which is already spoken for.

My 5yo and yearling are both homebreds and will cost me a lot more than either of the other two in the long run. About £1.5K just to get them on the ground and registered and that is without factoring in the keep of the mares (I would have had them to keep anyway) or raising them from being foals. Equally both would have cost me way more if bought as weanlings.
 
Just bought a new one two months ago, had a budget of 6k they wanted 7k , got him for 6.5k, he a 4 year old Oldenburg gelding by Indoctro.
 
My youngster was bred by my mum and my aunt. I waited until 6 months to make the final decision but she cost me...my aunts share of getting her on the ground in cash and my mum swapped me her share for some furniture I had bought but not used from next :-)
 
I had a bugdet of £2000 when I was looking for a happy hacker, I bought my mare for £900 with all tack and rugs and lots of extras. This was in 2004, I got my shettie for £145 in 2003 bugdet was nil but then I was not looking for a pony he sort of found me. I bred from my mare with all stud fees. passport etc I am up to around £1000 and she is 14 month old. And I recently bought a coloured 2 year old pony gelding for £150, no budget again I just felt sorry for him.
 
No budget as mum was buying him as a pressie..so cheap as possible really (bless her she offered to buy me a horse but didn't look at prices...had a shock when I left some horses mags at hers and she saw them!!!)

Anyway I ended up going to Ireland because got fed up of liars and thieves and couldn't have made a better decision!! For €800 I got a 3 year old just back heavy cob, including delivery to UK, tack and rugs!!! I've had him 7 years now and he's utterly amazing!! We've had the most fun together, he's forward going and nuts but so perfect for me!! I would have spend ten times that amount if I'd have known what I was getting!!

I'm planning another trip to Ireland soon to buy a colt to bring on, not sure if he will be a ID or Connie or even another hairy cob but whatever I end up with he'll have along way to go to beat my bargain bucket cob!!!;)

Most of mine have been around £2k but wasnt even looking for a new horse and ended up spending 7k on one a few years ago (he was worth every penny though:))
 
Budget was around £3500 (nearly 11 years ago), pony was less than £1000 (I can't remember exactly, think she was £950) so I had some spare money to buy her nice tack : )

I don't think they really wanted her and were glad someone would take her.

She wasn't exactly what I was looking for as she was nervous, young and was a native x but I fell in love with her and she has been the best friend I have ever had!
 
My budget was £2500 ish. Horse was £3250 but I fell for him after the first viewing. Took him on trial for a month and ended up buying for £2750.

I only viewed a couple of horses and went back to him as I knew he was what I wanted.

I set out for a 16.2hh ish, mare/gelding, of a sport horse/warm blood type... Would have loved a chestnut.

Typically I got a 15.3hh 12yr old ish gelding... Dark bay haha. Worth every penny as he's quite the character :)
 
£150 for my boy (who i have now) in 2004
My ArabxWB was free because my friend moved to Aus and couldnt sell him in time.
My Shettie was free because he was going to be shot because the owners couldnt be bothered looking after him anymore!
 
£250...didn't have an exact budget but wouldnt have been more than about £1000

Both the horses we bought cost under £2k and both came from dealers. Both times I didn't want to pay over £1500, particularly with the 2nd one.

First one cost £1800, was 3yo ex racer, poor condition, big sand crack in hoof, chronic wind sucker, only basically reschooled, came only in a scraggy headcollar. Today, knowing what I know now I would have offered him max £1000 take it or leave it, well actually I wouldn't have bought my 16yo daughter a 3yo ex racer when she hadn't got the experience or support in place (at that time) - horse has so much potential and could have really been something in the right hands so it's a shame (for her) that we bought her. We've done alright because she taught us loads

Second cost £1500, also an ex racer but 11yo, he came with a shed load of tack (which I have so far made £150 on) I think he was an RS horse at one stage, other than that I am not sure what he did since leaving racing as a 3yo but this horse is a total diamond and I consider him to be the bargain of the century. Kind of makes up for the 1st one :D

Jack was advertised for £4500 but we bought him for £4000. (We not actually being me but the very lovely lady who owned the farm where I keep him [long story]). Unfortunately she passed away but I was extremely fortunate to inherit Jack from her. I will always be in her debt.

ETA: We bought him as an inexperienced 4YO.

First mare - 15.2 TB, bought her straight off the track as a 4 year old. They wanted £2500 for her, I got her for £1200

Second mare - 16.1 KWPN registered Dutch Warmblood mare (she was imported by previous owners). Very well bred, "Medium" evented" in Holland. Well put together, relatively sensable but a quirky ride. They wanted £4750, I got her for £4250. They wanted to sell her to me as I got on so well with her, she was worth every penny!
 
I bought K for £4500 in 2008 budget was £5k. No particular budget for the wee man, phoned up to ask how much and bought him for £3.5k

My mare was £3250 but she was advertised at £3500, came with nothing.
Our budget was £3000-£3500, looked at one was below that and one a bit above, but Bella was perfect so she came home with us :)
 
I sold for £3000 and stupidly spent most of it £500 on stud fee (mare lost foal twice, took that as a point) so never used.

£500 ona new saddle

I spend £850 on Samba and her Colt. Sold Colt as weanling for £350.


I have nothing to show for the rest of the money, im useless with money.
 
I didn't really have a budget tbh! Paid £9,000 for my 5yr old Dutch Warmblood gelding. Best £9k I've ever spent! Not that I've ever had that money to spend before....nor do I think I'll ever see that kind of money again! :rolleyes:
 
my 2 cost me £1 each as they were gifted to me, ;) daughters foal cost about £240, that was 4 years ago,there was no budget on that one;) little Ted cost £800, budget was 1k
 
My budget was £2000 and I spent £2500 in 2009. He came with nothing & so far I've spent about £1700 on tack (inc a saddle company custom made saddle) and rugs.
Best money I've ever spent tbh! :)
I searched for a year for him so went to see loads of others!
