Buying babies is the thing to do; the right babies, with the right bloodlines. If you know what you are doing and you do it right, then you really do have a good chance at having a fantastic horse at the end of the process.
One thing I notice though, little ponies do just seem to get on with it because they have little kids for most of their lives doing bizarre things with them, so they really do become pretty used to everything. I think people with big horses do tend to molly coddle them somewhat and they won't play with their horses and do fun/silly stuff with them for fear of breaking them
