how much do you weigh and how big is your horse

My haffy has lifted me off the ground when he is having a strop on, if a light weight rider gets on him , you can almost see him laughing.
He is strong enough to take the pee and he will, my oh is 6 foot and he rides him as well taking your leg really is not a problem with him, on the back side my 7 year old can ride him, because she takes no c11p from him.

i'm just over 8 and a half stone and my pony is 13.3. i wouldnt put any more than 9 and a half on him since my friend's daughter who weighs that, rode him. he was out of character napping with her and didnt seem very happy. altho its a very good reason for me to keep my weight down coz if i dont ride him no one will, i'm too fussy!!

crikey theres some horses/ponys expected to carry alot of weight
sorry but if you are for example as said 16 stone you will not ride like 13 stone ?
you will ride exactly as you are 16 stone !!!
im not judging anyone just truly shocked at how much some people weigh and what they ride

I'm 5'4 and weigh 8st 8lbs, although want to get down to 8st.

Currently I ride my old 15hh chunky tb and sisters 16hh kwpn.

I've ridden anything from a 14.1hh heavyweight cob to a 17.2hh irish/tb- I did look like a pea on a mountain though on the 17.2hh, it was a long way down, and took what felt like forever to get my feet to reach the ground when dismounting!

I prefer to ride 15hh-15.2 though.

Never weigh myself size clothes 14 some times get down to a 12 never any smaller I ride 2 14.1hh welsh x's

I also ride 2 18hh ID

Would be interested in what evidence there is out there regarding riders weight etc

Just under 7st, my horse is 14.3 but I ride horses from about 10hh above. Heres one og the littleys I've been riding:

Theres loads of research out there, is all very interesting!

Theres the 20% rule which is popular, and also the one where you measure the amount of bone, and do a wee caluculation. Ive found both have a reasonably similar outcome. Ive also found people would be suprised at just how much thier horse can comfortably carry!

Not true, and if you want proof of that you will need acess to a small child.
The 1 stone 8 bag of cat litter nearly cripples me on a 10 min walk home,3 and half stone child can be carried on my back or shoulders up and down hill for hours- if you are able to carry yourself you feel less of a burden then dead weight so ability DOES have a massive impact.

That of course assumes that your weight is not above what the horse can carry, going by the 20% rule a 500kg horse would be able to carry around 15 stone 10-apply common sense for a baby/oldie/unfit horse ;)

I'm 5"3 and weigh between 12.5 and 14 stone, it just depends on when. My 16hd SFx doesn't seem to notice if going by tonight performance. She thought she was at Aintree and on the last furlong!!

And also, ask yourselves this question ladies before you worry about the weight your poor horsey has to carry.

How much does a full grown man weigh do you think when he's out hunting on his x raceing TB for the day?????

When we had cavalry regiments the average horse was 15.2, weight of man and his pack, 20 stones. Correctly balanced a fit army horse would have no problem in shouldering this weight.

5ft9 10st9 (should be 10st7) I ride a 17hh IDxTB, 16.3hh Trakenher, 16.2hh IDxTB, 16.1hh BWB, 16hh TB, 15.3hh TB, 15hh Con X (I ride for my job dont just own crazy number of horses :-))

I'm 5'2ish and weigh about 9.5 stone and my boy is 17'1 ish Irish draught x TB i think if he hadn't been bred for me and broken in by me he'd be far too much for me but he's a superstar
