I've just had my insurance renewal through and it's gone up to £47 a month!
This is for £5000 vets bill cover for a 10 year old cob worth £3000, who does hacking, schooling, riding club activities and local shows, and has been covered by the same insurers for 6 years with no claims - EVER! no public liability, loss of use, or personal accident included.
what cover do you guys have? how much do you pay and which insurers do you use?
This just seems extortionate!
thanks

Wow!

Mine is £42 per month... This is for 3!

They are all insured for max vet bills, one at a higher level then the other 2 as they are not ridden. No public liability / personal accident / tack etc included.

Who are you with?

Mine is £30 a month with Scottish Equestrian. That is for 6YO tb for RC activities. Purchase price £3000. I didn't bother with loss of use though as I am never convinced it is worth the extra cost.

Mine's £55 a month, it covers both Jazz and the trailer. Jazz is insured for purchase price £3,250, RC activities. No LOU as I only had a 2 stage vetting and, like EmmaC78, I'm not convinced LOU is worth what you pay for it.

Mines just gone up to £40 a month. for a rising 6 yr old, I have removed the public liability aspect as i have bhs cover. but my insurers have paid out over £5k in the last year, so for it to only be that much I was very impressed.

thanks for the replies - I'm with PetPlan. I heard they were good to pay out in the event of a claim.
Anyone ever tried ringing up and haggling? Just wondering how they calculate the premiums?

If it makes you feel any better, the NFU sent me an insurance renewal letter saying it would cost me £898 to insure a horse worth £2k for a year. Needless to say I went elsewhere to KBIS and pay just over £30 a month for same horse insured for £1k with £5k's vets fees.

Sasha is insured with animal friends, used to be amtrust but they changed underwriters and it shot up!
I pay £33 a month for death, straying, vet to £5000 PA one front leg excluded due to old injury , never been sick or lame while I've had her(sons Polocrosse horse)
Activities covered are RC/PC/hacking, Polocrosse , xc
Think we will be moving to veteran policy this renewal as she will be 16 in June.
Never made a claim

$60 a year with the OEF (Ontario equestrian federation) basically the same as BHS Gold, just covered for public liability. Insurance cover is mandatory here if you want to take a horse to the events I do, cards have to be produced at registration.

For vet bills, I pay as they come.

I am also with PetPlan, and yes they are very good at paying out.

I would give them a call and see what you can do!

Mines £51 a month with Stoneways for low level everything (BD to Medium/ BE to Novice/ BS to 120) think hunting is included? £5k vets fees with lower excess and horse insured for £3.5k.

I tried everyone to get it any cheaper and couldn't, without going with E&L.

NFU wouldn't even quote for my new horse because they asked for the medical history of my other horse (not insured with them) who has quite an extensive list of ailments (note not injurys!) and the broker i spoke to said i was a high risk client (?) despite the fact we had never made a claim on said horses insurance when she was insured!

Mine is £42 a month with Petplan, for 5k vets fees and he's insured for 1k. It excludes his back, back legs and tendons and ligaments (due to a lameness work up and had his back checked for KS - no problems found in back legs or back) It's a joke as i'm not covered for much but too scared to cancel it!!

Ive just cancelled mine. Paid £62 for the year for public liability with the BHS. Have set up a vet fees fund account.

We don't insure, I pay vet bills as they come in. I currently have 5 horses (well, 4 and a mule), and total vet bills for the last 10 years are €532.

I would be really careful about Animal Friends they are part of E& L ( google them) they are notorious for delaying parent some vets will not treat a horse insured by them unless you pay up front first

Well I can beat you all.....mine for one horse went up 25% this year from approx. £45 to £61 a month for death, theft and 5k vet cover. no liability as have that with BHS so it covers my non insured old girl too. That is with KBIS and I'm beginning to feel conned reading everyone's premiums!!!

I reckon they know I have a vet loving accident prone warm blood who I dare not drop cover on. I have claimed far more than I've paid out in 6 years of owning her and she's only 7!!!!!!

arent animal friends, e&l with a different name?

Yes, I think they are. There was a segment about them on Watchdog at the end of last year although from what I remember it was about their bad practices in relation to paying out on cat/dog claims rather than horses although it did put me off using them at renewal time.

This just reminds me that I really really need to do something about mine. I currently pay £100 a month to NFU for a 16 year old warmblood who has done not a lot other than eat and enjoy getting filthy for the last year!!

Ahh don't worry, I can make you feel better..I pay just over £70 a month with Petplan for my Wb valued at about £2k), only 3 legs covered, this is with £5k vet fees, LOU, tack and public liability. It is absolutely extortionate compared to some others and is mostly due to me panicking when faced with delivery of my very first horse. When renewal comes around I will be shopping around, going with BHS for PL, and removing LOU and tack as I've been advised by multiple people they're not really worth it?

Well I think I beat you all when my insurer (four counties) put my premiums up by 100% for 5k vets, tack and PL. back legs excluded. I told them to stuff their policy and went with pet plan for 3k vets, no PL, no tack and its £23 pm. Wonder what they will do at my first renewal with them in May??

Jake was diagnosed with stage 1 Wobblers when he was 2; he is now 8 (backed at 4) and has never had as much as a step out of line with it. This, understandably, makes life difficult insurance wise, but the conversation I had with NFU did make me laugh..

'What exclusions will there be' She goes off to talk to a vet..
'Wobblers'
'Anything a little more specific as that's quite a broad term' She goes off again...
'Back, all legs, ataxia, neurological problems, we can do public liability, and any falls or accidents.'
'So what exactly is he insured for then?'
'I'm not sure' :D And this was for 3k vets fees, 8yo warmblood, 17.3hh, no LOU, no tack, wont do PL, insured for £1000 at £75 A MONTH.

Needless to say that I am now with SEIB, have it in writing that the only exclusion is ataxia, 5k vets fees, no LOU, no PL (I have BHS gold), and a small-ish excess for £40.05 a month

I pay 30 a month for rising 3 for hacking etc (not that he has been but incase i take him out on the road I don't want them pulling the he's not insured for that if anything happened) 5k vets bills, Public Liability, loss of use I think thats it and he's insured for 850 with Petplan

When I shopped around for quotes last year most asked for an up to date vetting certificate. By the time I'd paid for one of them it worked out cheaper staying put!

I'm with Animal Friends and have been for 3 years or so. I pay £22 for mine to be insured for £500 but 5k of vets bills and the usually liability, tack etc, and I think £120 excess. The paid put for the last horse when I really wouldn't have done! I think I'd owned him a month possibly 6 weeks when he ran up over £1500 of vets bills for a deep seated thrush infection which clearly had to have been there prior to me buying him! They also paid out again for treatment to his hock, which had been flagged up 8 months before I bought him as being a problem. There is NO WAY they should have paid that! It was the same vet practice so they had all the medical history.

The only issue I had with them was charging me an excess twice, when the policy clocked over to the next year and the issue was close to the cut off point. Still not convinced that was right, but I didnt make a fuss considering what they paid out for! Oh, and there was some sort of issue with a less than £60 balance that didnt get paid for some reason. Not sure if that was the insurance or the vets though, as once the vets chased it on Christmas eve, it was then paid very quickly.

I might well live to regret using them, but I havent so far, and have always found the brilliant to deal with and substantially cheaper than other insurance companies :)

I was with pet plan who were brilliant when I had ponies, then when I got a horse (only 2inches bigger than the pony) they doubled the premium.

I moved to kbis, have their platinum policy so horse value is £3k, insured for £5k vet bills or or £7.5k colic, and it has a 15 month claim period not the normal 12 month. Costs £45 a month
They so far have paid out several huge bills with no quibble within a week of sending in the forms, though I do think we will probably reach the £5k limit with this one well before the 15 months is up since we are well over £3k at 7 months with another big bill coming at the end of the month

Not anymore. They used to be but are now underwritten by Red Sands

thanks again for all the replies - I can't believe there's so much variation, even within the same insurance company! I'm going to give petplan a ring later this afternoon and see if there's anything they can do, although I'm seriously considering self insuring at the moment. Just looked back and when I first insured Mason he was a 4YO nutjob who was far more likely to injure himself than the sensible(ish) 10YO he is now, and the premium then was £27 a month! it just seems bizarre, but then lots of insurance premiums seemed to have jumped up this year.
