How heavy a rider would my boy be comfortable carrying?

He is a 16.2hh, 14 years old TB. As far as I know he is healthy and is reasonably fit.

Some piccy's

it might be a little about the body carrying you but its all about the legs, because they have to carrie the horses weight plus yours plus a saddle so you are riding 1stone over you actualy weight so if hs legs are quite strong then i would say no more than 14/15 stone.

Well think of the likes of WFP, I'm not saying he's fat but he's 6ft 6 or something stupid so must weigh at least 14stone and that for travelling cross country so for "lesser" activities I'd defo say 15stone. Saying that they usually tell you when someone's too heavy

That's what I'm worried about

I nearly had a heart attack when I got on the scales last night (haven't weighed myself for ages)

I'm just wondering if my weight gain could explain why he is getting increasingly nappy!

If you have recently put a bit of weight on, could that have altered the way the saddle is sitting on his back/shoulders? Just a thought

i was thinking the exact ame as the others. And if thats you in your siggy pictures, then theres no way you could be too heavy. maybe as YorksG said it might be a saddle issue?

Im 5ft 10 ride a 16hh3" tb almost identical to your boy and im 13stone..... (tell anyone and il kill ya!)

He is fine, and can do everything, so my weight is obv not a problem..... does he have a sore back? foot? anything like htat?

it is not only the riders weight that counts but how that weight behaves in the saddle, & the work being expected.

a millennium ago when i did my training a very good trainer told us this....

imagine you are giving a kid a piggy back...imagine the kid is still and not wriggling = no problem OK?

now imagine the same brat wriggling about = suddenly its a lot more difficult right?

same principal a light weight beginner/poor rider who does not control their posture is 'heavier' to carry than a chunky who knows whats what,

assuming you are an ok rider, doing moderate/medium work, i would say 14-15 stone is ok,
his napping might just be one of those things nothing to do with you being a bit more than you used to be.....
BUT could you now find your slightly more roly poly means you are reaching for your stirrups and thus falling a little forward? i know i tended to do this when i rode while preggy, if so try upping a hole or 2?

nice horse by the way, bye

you are build like me and strangely you horse is build like my boy, he has hind issues now due to getting on a bit (17yrs) and he happierly carrys me, he is also a full TB. i would say 15st max but would be more comfortable with 12/13stone.

Thanks guys, You've put my mind at rest for now at least!

I'm not going to say how much I weigh but I am heavier then I look

For now I will be fine going by what you all think he can carry weight wise but think I need to cut back on the biscuits to make sure I don't get any heavier
