Just a random musing really, I was cleaning my dog's bowls out tonight and my sister asked why I do them so often (

) and I started wondering whether I clean them too much.

I've never really given it a second thought to be quite honest, I have always done it for my dog.

Hmmmm well after mis-reading the title of the post initially and wondering how on earth I was meant to do colonic irrigation on my dog....

I wash up the food bowls every time I feed them (twice daily) and the water bowl once daily when I put fresh water down in the morning

Used to put them in the dishwasher when I had one but its good old washing up liquid and water now

Whenever we go to stay at home with the folks as they complain! Henry doesn't leave much in there though, he's a good bowl cleaner too.

Dinner bowls - after every feed, the same I would my horse. Besides, my greyhound is fussy eater at the best of times - I think he'd certainly turn his nose up at eating from a less than sparkling plate!

Water bowl gets rinsed out and cleaned one a day.

My two clean there's out til they shine, then the littlest pug goes and cleans them both out a second time just to make sure

They get rinsed out every now and then.

My dog licks the bottom of her bowl clean but leaves the sides of it so I tend to wash it as often as I can.

Her water bowl isn't as bad, I always empty it in the morning, rinse and refill it and then do the same again in the evening but I do top it up during the day if she drinks from it.

When my sister asked why I cleaned them I asked whether she'd prefer me to serve her dinner on a filthy plate that's not been washed for days with a refreshing glass of water in a glass that has old lipstick marks and water that is a good few days old in it.

She gave me a funny look and walked away.

Only use bowls once a week but they clean them pretty well so I usually give them a rinse with hot water. Rest of the time I hand them a chunk of meat and bones!

I feed dry food so the bowl doesn't look that dirty. I rinse it once a week or so though.

Water bowls are rinsed out daily...well swilled out before re-filling.

They are occasionally either hand washed or goes in the dish washer and it usually feels kind of pointless, mostly they go in to the dish washer - sparkly clean and comes out - sparkly clean! The dogs sure doesn't seem to notice any difference between recently washed food bowl and not washed for a week food bowl.

Sometimes I even spread their food out over the floor to let them work a little more for it (there is a lot of sniffing to make sure they haven't missed any pieces of food within their designated area) and I've had no complaints about that either.

Water bowl on other hand is rinsed and re-filled daily and occasionally goes in the dish washer.

My 2 our on dried food so their plastic bowls don't get that mucky so maybe once a month and water bowl gets rinsed out everytime fresh water gets put out (usually twice a day) but we have ordered them nice new ceramic bowls for christmas so Ill probably wash those once a week.

It's interesting really, as my dog is quite fussy and she won't drink out of her water bowl if it's not been re-filled and she's similar with her dinner bowl. If it's a bit mucky she takes a while to go near it to start eating and she seems much happier and more eager to eat/drink when she's got clean bowls.

Not that often, just when they start looking a bit grubby.

Doesn't seem to bother the doggles - tbh, if they don't have a problem with swiping mouldy yoghurt pots from the bin I don't think they mind a less than spotless bowl.

I feed raw so I clean the bowl after every meal, although ped always takes the food (thinking gruesome looking chicken carcusses and raw fish) out of the bowl and drags it all around the kitchen floor before eating it, nice.

Oops miss read as how often do you cleans your dogs balls........was going to post never as he licks his own (well would if he hadn't had the snip), but guess my answer's the same for bowls anyway!!!!
