How often do you REALLY worm/shoe/teeth ?

worming - every 4-5 months (yard schedule so i'm not certain I just worm when the tube appears in my stable!)

shoes - every 8 weeks

teeth - every 6 months

My horse is wormed 4 times per year.
Shod every 5-6 weeks without fail.
Teeth done every 6-9 months on advice of EDT.
Saddle checked every 6 months.
Equine osteo every 3 months without fail.
Vaccinations yearly.

I won't scrimp on his health and welfare. He's a TB, he works hard for me and he deserves the best :).

For those that worm every 6 weeks can I ask why? It seems to me to be rather a lot and putting all those chemicals into your horse every 6 weeks can't be good for the horse surely? Also do you not think maybe you are adding to the problem of the worms becoming resistant?

dentist - was every six months, but now he's five, every year.

wormer - pramox/equest programme (4 times a year - but on vet advice cutting down from now, using egg counts)

feet - farrier every 8 - 12 weeks, for check up and trim. I rasp with riders rasp every week or so.

Do I sound very square

Farrier: every 6 weeks, possibly 5 if needed on occasions

Worming: 2 x a year for red & tape (also worm count once too)

Teeth: checked twice yearly as BF & TF are around 6 months apart with vaccinations, TF needs doing every 6 months, tho attention usually only required once a year for BF

Vaccinations: up to date & kept so.

I find it quite worrying that a lot off people are saying we worm by the results of worm counts and tape once a year. Tape yes fine, but what about pinworm, encyested, bots which none are shown on worm counts? Iv known a few horses now have problem by owners relieing on worm counts and horses going down with colic. Worm counts I believe only pick up on one certain type off worm so I don't see the point. I see worm counts as a waste of time until they can find a way of picking up on all the worms.

I also agree that worming every 6 weeks is OTT and so many people don't know their horses weights and under dose them, that is what will help build up resistance. A tube off equest say will treat up to 575kg, that is NOT very much really. My 16.2hh tb is over that and 1 tube is not enough for him, but so many horses just say a tube will do!! That's where the problems lie

Current regime is ......

Farrier every 5 weeks
Teeth every 9 months
Worm count every 6 months and double dose Strongid P in March/April
Saddler every 3 months (he's in remedial saddle at the mo)
Back lady every 2 weeks

Feet done every 5-6 weeks
Teeth every 6 months
Back every 6 months or more if needed ( Saddle also checked at this point)
Worming 4 times a year, with the seasons. Horse is on individual grazing which is poo picked every day so I don't see the need to worm any more than x 4.

I've realised that I've changed what I do, over the years.

Worming - used to be either yard rules (generally every 2mths), or if no rule I'd do my own thing worming according to maximum dosage interval on the packet and using correct wormer for time if year. Now we cross graze with other animals so I only worm 4x a year.

Teeth - used to have vet every year, but every other year they'd say horse is fine. Now only have them looked at every 2yrs.

Hooves - used to have farrier every 3mths, horse is now self trimming and I take a rasp to them maybe once or twice a year.

Vaccination - used to be annually until I accidentally went over date. Now its tetanus every 2yrs. I may start the flu up again at some point.

Back - physiotherapy etc, never (unless there was a problem and vet recommended). Had a saddler out once to reflock two saddles I already had, but don't have any more. No one for about 10yrs. Had saddler last year who told me the saddle horse loves doesn't fit (it doesn't, I use a riser and shim as necessary), told me to use another of my saddles instead (which horse hates and constantly bucks). Won't be bothering again.

I'm surprised by the number of people I've met who don't carry out any basic care beyond feeding, shoeing when they fall off, throwing a rug on in winter and calling a vet if its an emergency. I thought an almost complete lack of basic care would be a false economy, but maybe not :/
