How old are you and your horse?

51 - riding pony is 8 and companion mini is 18.

I do really need a third as mini is being left on her own for too long really. But can't decide what to get!

How old are you and your horse?

I am 52 and Bert is 6. I realised Bert will be only 21 when I reach retirement age so hope I will be well enough to continue working for many years beyond retirement. I really should have got an older horse. Although I was unfortunate to loose Homey at 20 I have friends with horses that are still going strong at 31. If he makes to 31 I will be 77.

My stepfather is in his early 70s and if he suggested buying a 6 year old now, I wouldn’t worry about it. We have friends in their 80s who are still out hunting.

I’ve had horses live to 35 and horses not live to 2. There are no guarantees but I take some assurance that I have a plan for my own horses if something happens to me at any age.

My parents are a constant reminder that life begins in your 60s and 70s. They seem to constantly travel, have an amazing social life, do charity work, sit on boards as non-executives, hike, sail, play tennis. My only consideration horses and retirement is whether having horses will mean I’m too restricted. I fully intend to move into ‘owner’ rather than rider category, but I’m already half way there at the moment given how little time I have to ride myself.

61, 18 and 4. My plan was for the 18 year old to last me out, but then I needed a companion, didn't want 2 ridden horses and didn't want 2 oldies so I bought a 2 year old (now 4). I've always known I can't keep the younger one forever - I hope I have many years of riding left, but I don't want to be looking for a home for him when he's old and I'm in no position to be choosey. I hope to find him a nice home with someone who will love and enjoy him for many years, as I have with my older horse. But not yet ..

40 and the girls are 14, 14 and 7.

Having lost a few ponies young (the Diva was only 10), I see 20 as a pretty acceptable (still very sad and devastating though) age to lose them, personally. I suppose our own experiences shape how we view things. I’d have done anything to have had Diva til she was 20.

That said, I have a feeling Polly is going to stick around til she’s about 30, just because 🤣

I'm 38 and my horses are (soon-to-become) 19 and 6. The 19yo I've had since he was 5yo, and got the youngster when he was just 8mo. Realistically, I don't think my future holds buying another horse.... But who knows! I'm still dreaming about a liver chestnut Polish Arab. 😅

You are absolutely right of course. I lost Homey at 20 and we all thought he was a really tough pony who would be around for many years to come he was to be my last horse. He had no metabolic issues and was sound it was his stomach that stopped working sadly.

I hope Bert and I have many years together I love him so much but there is no guarantees.
