What do you think is the oldest you could put a mare in foal for for the first time?

Depends on the individual mare. I think most people would not put a mare in foal for the first time past about 14/15 years old, but I know of people who have put maiden mares of 17-19 in foal without any problems. Some older maiden mares can be difficult, and have limited fertility. Get the mare fully assessed by a repro vet, preferably with uterine biopsy, swabs and culture before making any decisions.

Really depends on the horse, i had one mare go in foal for the first time at 20 (an accident!! Yearling colt escaped that we did not know about) but you may find it hard to get them in foal after 15. Have a repo. vet check her out and see what he thinks.

Tills is 18 and preggers (first foal).
We had her assessed by a vet before we made any plans, but he gave her the all clear. She was AI'd with fresh and took first time.

I know of ex-competition mares who have been put in foal for the 1st time in their late teens, and gone on to have foals well into their 20s. As long as a mare is fit and well there should not be a problem.

Bloss is 14, will be 15 when she foals. I wouldnt go past 15 for first foal personally.

We had a 16yo maiden to my stallion this year - got in foal at the first attempt, using AI (chilled semen), absolutely no probems.
As AndyPandy says, it really depends very much on the individual mare - I don't think there are any hard-and-fast rules.
But if your mare is 14/15 or over, I would certainly be looking at putting her in foal sooner rather than later, if I were you!!

Dol is 21 and we are considering trying her in the spring!
Have taken much advice and as long as she is checked and everything healthy ie no cysts on her uterous we will go ahead with AI ing.
Take advice from people you trust and your vets, but at the end of it, she is your mare the decision is yours!

One of my mares has just had her first foal at 17. However, it took 3 years, 2 stallions, 9 inseminations......and great big vet and stud bills!

Cloud was not a maiden mare when I offered her to Ezzy, however she hadn't had a foal since she was 4 years old. I put a cap on this breeding - she had to become pregnant in her 13th year otherwise forget it. She did get pregnant and of course you know that Legacy was the outcome.

Our mare had her first foal this year, at the age of 18. Natural covering, needed a jab to come properly into season, no problems either (except her now being a right narky cow!) Foalie is just a couple of hours in this one...
