Left my clipped cob in one tonight for first time ever ( its due to get down to minus 7 tonight)
Im at home really worrying now though - hes in his stable and im just so worried he will get it caught or something

Do you use them? Do you think they are safe?

What type of neck cover?

Snuggy Hood/lycra type or rug neck?

Either way mine are wearing the lot, though I never leave them turned out with anything around the face (I cut the face off my snuggy hoods before they actually started making one without face)

its a neck cover that fastens onto any rug - has clips on to attach. Only thing he could get caught on (i think) are his haynets which are fastened to baling twine -

Mine wears them regularly, have never had a problem with them, it's just an extension of the rug really so is just as 'safe' :)

I prefer detachable neck covers as makes the rugs much more flexible in autumn and spring. I've used them on all my horses for years with no problems.

Honestly don't think you need to worry!

stop worrying! I do sort of worry about rug clips getting caught on things too in the stable, but they never ever have, and in any case if they ever did, something has to give and it would either be the haynet or the clip!

yes your right - hes a big strong cob - he could soon snap those straps if needed! (this is him who chews through doubled up haynets) ty :)

Thanks for posting this :)

I was about to post the same, as we are in for a lot of cold and snow tomorrow ( or so they say, will believe it when I see it) and was worried about leaving his full neck rug on

From Mrs rug OCD

Its an acceptable risk, especially if no haynets etc. Big strong horses can pretty much snap anything. My vet told me to just buy cheaper rugs if I was worried and there maybe something in that. My bugbear is rugging foals who weigh less than 100Kg. Then hanging is a real issue.

^^This. No need to worry, I've seen clips give way, my lad took a clip off the back of his rug (rambo duo - hope I can say this - so not a cheap rug), no idea how or what he got it caught on, but I went to change his rug one day, and it had vanished, the metal had given way, as the rug wasn't torn.

I'm forever worrying about rugs getting caught. Ethel managed to get hers stuck in a bit of bailing twine that was attached to a tie ring outside her stable when she was in the stable  I've rescued a couple of horses that were stuck in their hay nets and one filly who had been pulling at her rugs and got the strap stuck in her teeth. Bless her, she just stood there waiting for someone to rescue her! None of them were wearing necks though and I too think that the clip or net would break before your horse does :)
