And do you wish you could comfortably ride smaller or bigger horses?

I'm 5'1 and my current horse is 14.2. I don't feel comfortable (physically) riding anything bigger, unless they're very fine. I like being able to get my legs around something, and a horse's trot just feels so... slow!

I've ridden bigger horses and I feel like a pea on a mountain up there. I like being small because I get to ride the fun small ones, but there is a part of me that would love a big Warmblood. Would I look ridiculous? :D

I am 5ft7 and my horse is 16'1, we fit okay but I do feel better on a bigger horse (16'2 upward) I would like to be able to ride ponies but I do look a bit big, but I do feel much less safe on a pony so its a good excuse that I am too big ;)

I have the opposite problem - I'm 5'11 (tall and slim-ish, not too heavy) and my mare is a 16.3 chunky ISH. I feel the right size on her, and not too Thellwell-pony-esque. I'd love to be able to ride something a bit smaller as I feel so much more confident on smaller horses, but feel that the feet-dragging-on-the-ground look isn't too clever! I'm destined to ride the giants of the horse-world :-)

We all want what we can't have...

5'5" and my current one is a 14.2 Welsh D, and he's not particularly heavy for his breed. Before I had a 16.2 (that's all I'm admitting to, though it may have been tricky getting him under a stick at that!) RID who was a substantial type compared to a lot of the lighter IDs around. I'm probably slightly underhorsed on the Welsh, not that he seems to find it a problem, and was definitely overhorsed on the ID. I preferred the ID, his stride pattern was far easier to ride & I always felt at home on him, but there was never any doubt that he could deck me any time he chose!

I'm 5'6 and my Connemara is 15h and 3/4 of an inch! Very important that 3/4 of an inch.

It's a combination of height and build. I have happily ridden a 13.2hh highland but not a show pony build. Just as I'd be grand on an 18hh TB but wouldn't necessarily want a 18hh chunk

I'm 5'1 and my horse is 14.3/15hh, may be a bit taller when she's filled out. I feel comfy on her, small enough to comfortably get on and off. I wish I could ride tall leggy horses but I'm just too short.
I'm well suited to my mare I think, both of us are small and slightly round :D

I'm 5ft4 and I have a 33 ins, 35 ins, 11hh, 11.1hh, 13.1hh and 13.2hh. Obviously I don't ride them all! The 13.1hh is an Exmoor x New Forest, she is in her 20s and retired now, but I did used to ride her. The 13.2hh is a reg New Forest pony. I don't look really big on her, although I probably would look too big on a very fine 13.2hh. In an ideal world I would be short enough and light enough to ride the 11hh and 11.1hh but even if I was light enough I'm too tall.
The biggest I've ridden was 17.3hh and the biggest I've owned was 15.2hh. If/when I buy another I would probably look for something around 14.2hh-15.2hh.

5'7 and 1/4 and my 15.1 and 1/4 hh Connie is actually just the right size for me.

However, if she were any finer (bear in mind she can hold 6 G&Ts in two rows along her back as she is traditionally built), my feet would be tickling her knees. I look okay on things bigger, of course, but I am bottoming out at 16.2hh, I have decided.

It's quite far enough to the ground. Whilst falling off my fat Connie has only ever happened once, and that was because my lycra-clad arse and her bare back were incompatible and I was extremely glad no one saw me leap off an XC jump in the field, and go straight over and down the other side, it did make me think that I was getting too old and had too many responsibilities to do silly things like ride an enormous horse. Besides, I think I can only afford vets' bills up to 16.2.

I'm 5"9/5"10 with all of my height in my legs so anything without a bit of a barrel means I have to either ride like a jockey or I can touch my toes under the girth! My boy is 16.2hh (though I have to admit I thought he was bigger for a while!) he's got a bit of chunk as in IDxISH (probably a bit of Welsh D in there as well)

Have to admit even at my super skinniest (which I most certainly am not now) I've never felt I looked right on anything under 15.3hh and feel too heavy for anything that isn't well muscled/stocky and any skinny TB types are a no go whatever their height.

5'3.5" and I have two, 16.3hh who I still ride and a retired 15.2hh. I prefer bigger horses although I do look better size wise on a small horse (15.1hh ish).

5'8ish, two highlands, both 14,1, and a quarter horse who's about 15,2 (*cough*3*cough*). Probably look a bit better on the quarter horse, but the highlands are stocky wee *******. Wouldn't want to ride anything too fine at their height!

I am 5' 6" and have two cobs - the lighter of the two is 14:3hh and she does feel a bit small but we look ok. I am 10 stone and she carries me no problem. The other one is 14hh and built like a tank. She feels bigger to ride. The horses I used to have were nearer 16hh but now I am older I don't mind being a bit nearer the ground.

My friend is 5' 1" and she rides a 16hh - she does look a bit small on him and struggles to get her leg on properly when things get a bit interesting.

I'm 5ft7 with proportionally short legs and seem to sit comfortably on anything 14.2hh (Perhaps even smaller) and up as my leg gets taken up on the smaller ones but the height in my upper body stops the pea on a drum look on the bigger ones. I have versatile conformation!

Current riding horse is a 16hh chunk and she's a really good fit. Retired horse is 15.2hh, finer build but still a well sprung rib cage and I still look fine on her but part of the retirement is I do feel too heavy now but that's really down to her dreadful conformation and arthritis starting rather than height and build.

I'm 5'6 and ride a chunky 15hh Arab, i love the size of him, perfect height to do everything i need and nearer to the ground when i fall off.
I also ride the OH 's 16.3 PRE and i find him too high and annoying to handle, especially when he puts his nose in the air .A friend used to ride him who was 4ft9 and she looked a bit daft on him in my opinion and couldn't reach to get his tack on and could never get off to open gates cos she couldn't get back on him again, bit silly that, i can hop on and off my horse any time i want even in my slightly creaky middle age!

I'm 5'8 and unfortunately a rather heavy build, despite not being fat per say (I'm about 10st10 atm), and my main riding horse is a big lump of a 16.2hh. On him I feel comfortable, and his huge amount of neck and smooth travelling paces has rather spoilt me since I've had him - hacking anything else now just seems like a damned uncomfortable idea. But my two youngsters are smaller. One finely built who I think will top out around 16hh, and I'm really hoping will chunk up a bit, and one connemara chunk who will probably finish around 14.2hh. Size wise I think I will be OK riding them both, but whether I want to or not is another matter :p

I do wish I was one of those small people who could jump on all the fun looking ponies though.

There's a dressage rider around me about your height OP, who has a string of nice warm bloods around the 15.3-16hh mark and she looks fine on all of them (and does very well competing)

I'm about 5'81/2" and my cob and my previous horse are/were 16hh. I have had bigger horses (Shire/Clydesdale/ID) and enjoyed riding them but the cob takes up the leg. I used to ride our R&D 14.3hh cob, who also took up the leg but prefer something bigger.

Short and round and weigh a million pound haha.

A bit under 5'4 on a 16/16.1h ID. He's quite narrow through the shoulder so doesn't feel too wide but he is a bit big for me - I didn't want to worry about (my) weight though. My legs don't stretch very far so he has to put up with me giving an aid somewhere up his ribs! Friend is 5'4 on a 17.2 and is a bit 'pea on a mountain'. Other friend however is about 5'5/6 and looks great on her 17.2 but she's got long legs which helps.

I'm 5'9 and ride a 16.3 ID mare and she feels just right for me. I've always ridden smaller horses in the past (first was a 14.3 Highland cross, than a 15.1 Anglo, followed by 15.2 Welsh D) but I have to admit I do love the feel of a bigger horse - longer stride, comfy trot and super armchair canter!!

I am 5'7" and I feel most comfortable on horses that are 16hh plus. That said, I'm very light (8 stone) so I was comfortably riding my 14.1hh Arab mare until her retirement several years ago. I had her from the age of 11, and sadly she did not grow as I did!

Ive always had a "horse" head on. In lessons my chosen horses were a 16hh mare or a 17hh gelding, nothing smaller would do. When i was full grown i was 5'8 and my 16hh TB felt tiny to me sometimes, and my friends 15.2 cob definitely felt too small. My boy is 17hh and he feels perfect for me.

I am 5'6 and have a 15h and a 15.3 they feel just right but I have had a 16.3 she did feel big but got used to her and she was a very good girl so never felt over horsed and have rode smaller as I am only 9.5 stone

I'm 5'10 and most of my horses have been around 16.2 although build is more important than height when it comes to looking "right" imo. My gelding is 17.2 (possibly 17.3) but has just been retired so I'm riding the pony who is only 13.2. However she is a chunky Fell so it's not too horrendous. I look about right on the big man as he's not massively wide although on the ground I've had silly comments about having such a big horse...well he wasn't meant to make that height! His replacement will most likely be a Dales, though I'd prefer an over height one to take up as much leg as possible.

5'5 and ride a 13.2 1/2h Fell pony.

I wish I were smaller actually, then I would ride the Exmoor and buy the 12.3h Fell I've had my eye on for a year lol.

when I was younger, the bigger the better although my own horses have been at the 15.1/15.3h height previously. I like the pony brain though and appreciate their hardiness.

I'm 5'4" and regularly ride anything between 15.2hh and 17.2hh at work. My own at home range from 41"-17.2hh with a bit of everything in between that I sit on. I don't ride the ponies regularly nor for any more than 10mins at a time.

My next riding horse/pony will be a Fell. I miss my lad and he was the perfect size to do anything with! I'm not bringing any more home from work. I'll not have another tb again. As much as I love them they are too hard work! And mine live more like natives!
