Do you have to be compared to your pony to be a real squisher.

I am just under 5ft8 riding a 13.2 welsh cxd. I don't feel under horsed bizarrely in fact she is a very sharp and fun ride who carries me effortlessly. People tell me I don't look too big but I have this nagging doubt :o

So any pics of comparitive squishers?

I bought this pony for my daughter but she is seriously not a child's ride so not sure she will ever manage her but I LOVE her :D

6'2" on a 14.2hh probably makes me a pony squisher, although he's not mine I just ride him so maybe it doesn't count! Ponies rock :D

Anything under 12.2hh (except proper stocky 12.2 natives) makes me feel a bit mean - I'm 5'4 but slight. Anything 13.2hh plus feels absolutely fine, but then so does the 17.2 I ride

Forget about what other people think. A nicely deep barrelled cxd is very much a 'horse' to ride, and unless you are very heavy I don't see how there would possibly be a problem. Have a look at affiliated m&m showing, there are people my size riding Shetlands!

I am 5ft7 & a pony squisher :D

This is me on my 14.2

Depends more on build, of both horse & rider than height. I'm 5'10 with 36" legs & lightly built. On a 13.2 native with a short neck & decent barrel I look fine with jumping stirrups. Even with long stirrups & my legs too long, because my upper body doesn't look too bad, its only when I dismount people notice my height. Whereas a long, fine narrow barreled 14.2 I look a bit silly on. Mines a 14.2 connie x tb. My legs are too long really, but as I was a tall teen I've always been used to riding her, & never hindered us competing & hunting. Unless jumping I ride v long so if anything that emphasises my height. Cos I was very light before my daughter & as a tall teen, by default I usually was the one that ended up schooling/ riding small fizzy/green/unbroken ponies so I think I'm just used to it. I will get on a stocky 12.2 if its necessary but not just for fun. And when daughter moves onto mine in 18mnths, I plan on getting another 14.2 connie x tb or full connie, unbroken & spending 2 yrs or so bringing it on for daughter to move onto when mine slows down. Which will include competing it a bit too, & hunting. I'm 9stone in full riding gear, so its more my weight I consider now. Tbh though heightwise as long as it isn't affecting the pony I don't give a stuff what anyone thinks.

As long as the pony can manage you fine then there isn't a problem. I'm 5ft 9 and i own a heavyweight 14.1hh gypsy cob and i am fine on her as she takes my leg up nicely.

I think I over-squish you all! I'm 5"8 and I sometimes ride a 13.1 new forest :D I wouldn't go out in public on her for fear of being told I'm too big!

Elsiecat I think you are on a par with me!!

Mine is quite fine so doesn't really take up my leg lol. I know I am not too heavy for her but ....

I don't want to buy anything bigger but I am really keen to join the RC and things and not sure if I dare.

I hope I'm not too heavy for mine :o I'm the only one that can keep her collected enough to get into a nice canter so I'm hoping thats because I keep her calm and not that I squash her into submission

If grown men ride New forests I'm sure I'm fine :D

As long as your height doesn't have a negative impact & you are fine weightwise then really don't worry about it. My legs are as long as most 6' plus men's, & I have done rc level stuff on 13.2s plenty of times. And on my 14.2 I did loads of affiliated without negative comments. Only rude remarks I've had were from those types who were also slagging everyone & everything for everything, eg I was too tall, someone else's horse was too big, not a nice colour, trailer, etc. Or polite hints that I might like to sell/loan pony to them. And when daughters 9 she'll move onto her & look like a pea on a mountain (can't afford a 13.2 of my girls standard & why have second best lol) & some people might not like that. But as long as I know what I'm doing is right, I really don't care what the odd busybody may or may not think.

Thanks littlelegs and everyone.

I have been iut of horses for about ten years and I initially bought her just to bring on for my daughter and thought I might hack her out a bit and be able to lead my daughter off her etc.

But now I have her I am sooo into riding her and we are doing loads together. I only have time to ride one so if I wanted to get a bigger one wouldn't have a jockey for her if that makes sense so I would like to do it all with her for the next 3 years then buy something to make 14.2-15hh for me when my daughter takes her over. If I am still as keen that is.

I am having a saddle specially made to fit us both and help distribute my weight evenly. As I said I don't think she has a problem carrying me at all.

Thanks for the replies :)

I'm 5'10 with legs to match. I used to regularly ride a 13.2hh. Judging by the way he'd take off with me, he could carry me fine! Miss that wee man :)

My own little lad is 14.2hh, he coped fine with me and took up my leg ok.

Ponies are fab :D

I'm 5 ft 7 and I used to ride a 13hh welshie. He was far too green and sharp for younger riders and threw such a huge leap into canter that a couple of smaller riders fell off the back!

I used to get a few odd looks out hacking, particularly if I was with shorter girls on bigger horses! I just ignored it and carried on, he carried me easily for hours out hacking.

In fact he was the most fun pony/horse I had ever ridden and I would have bought him in a heartbeat had he been for sale!
