Mine is 18mm, had it about 5 years and it's still brilliant. I only have it on the front of my stable which has no bedding on it, that's where my horse stands to eat her hay/feed and look over the door, so it's been in pretty constant use the whole time.
One of the stables on the yard has thinner stuff which is rubbish - it's too light so it moves around a bit and the bedding can get underneath.
Mine is really thick, honestly, it's truly stupid, refuses to learn anything useful, just lays there letting the horses walk all over it, it's never going to win Mastermind...
17-18mm thick matting is fine for horses, don't get any thinner though. Thinner may be ok for ponies but with the weight & twisting & turning a horse does in a stable you may find that it will rip under the movement.
