We have only had our 13 year old dog a few months. I don't mind if he gets on the sofa or bed (although he has got a couple of his own beds around the house). The problem is that he feels he has to ask by whining until you pat the bed (hes quite deaf) to invite him up - this is a problem when OH and I are asleep as he likes to get on and off the bed quite a few times in the night to have a cough, go out to the garden etc so we get woken about 4 times a night to invite him onto the bed. Yesterday we both fell asleep on the sofa and were woken reasonably often for the same reason. If hes shut out of the room he barks really loudly to be let in.
Given his age and illness is he likely to get the idea and just jump up or is it so ingrained by now that we just have to accept it?
