We have only had our 13 year old dog a few months. I don't mind if he gets on the sofa or bed (although he has got a couple of his own beds around the house). The problem is that he feels he has to ask by whining until you pat the bed (hes quite deaf) to invite him up - this is a problem when OH and I are asleep as he likes to get on and off the bed quite a few times in the night to have a cough, go out to the garden etc so we get woken about 4 times a night to invite him onto the bed. Yesterday we both fell asleep on the sofa and were woken reasonably often for the same reason. If hes shut out of the room he barks really loudly to be let in.

Given his age and illness is he likely to get the idea and just jump up or is it so ingrained by now that we just have to accept it?

I hadn't thought about that - he does have a routine with the bed that he only gets up on OHs side, although he has to run around and look at my side first - I had put this down to arthritus in one front leg. So maybe I should be grateful for only having to sit up and pat the bed if I now have to get out of bed and lift him up

What breed, size is he? Could you fashion a little step or a ramp?

Or he might just be demanding

when my boy was in the house recuperating from an op he would stand by my bed and bark in my face if he wanted out for a pee

Hes a medium size Corgi cross - and I'll have a think about a step. LOL to barking in your face - it makes me jump a mile when he suddenly barks because its time for a walk or dinner
