How to tactfully...

Just a point but its important not to overplay the view that "they are boasting about which horses they ride etc..". It might just be standard boasting with nothing real behind it; ergo they are just being normal.

It's only a problem if they get pushy or abusive toward others or each other in that atmosphere. Otherwise its just normal.

Thanks again everyone :)

It's nice to see some of the others ride him as he goes really well for them and I think it's good that he's well rounded and other people can ride him. So it's a shame, but I'm just going to stop the rides all together. It's not like it's often or for very long, but I can't be bothered with the hassle! As some of you guys have pointed out, it was a dangerous situation and I'm certainly not keen on it happening again...even if my horse did seem to enjoy himself (a little too much!!)

There's definitely a problem with it at the minute. There's a few not being very nice to the others about being able to ride horses they can't. I'm certainly not keen to encourage it.

I understand your predicament. I only let people ride my horse if I know they will listen to what I tell them, I know him best after all. The 1 time I let someone who thinks she knows it all on him, he bucked her off!! This is sooo out of character, he's a horse that rarely puts a hoof wrong in any situation. I felt terrible and she will never ride him again, he hated her! I will happily let my 2 best friends ride him and he goes nicely for them. I also let the yo's 14yo daughter ride him occasionally. She rides him really nicely but it would only ever be under supervision. I like to see how he's going from the ground so it's good to have a few trusted people. A few other people from the yard have asked me if they can ride him and I always say "not today" or " maybe some day" and that day will never come. I do feel bad but I feel too bad to say an outright no and feel I have to justify it etc. If things ever got complicated with yo daughter I'd just pull the plug on it, not worth the hassle.

Don't feel too bad about it. I only let people I have seen ride on my boy because while he is a good horse he is young and might do something bad you never know. I never expected him to do a bucking bronco thing with a professional rider I mean he has let novices ride him with no issue. Wasn't like he has never been told what to do either i can be firm with him if needed and other people who school him are too. He just took a disliking to that guy. Horses are just weird.

It's best not to get yourself into a situation where someone gets hurt and you are then liable.

I'm to selfish to let others ride my boy :p I want him all to myself... And to be honest he likes it that way too <3 ... Yes of course my trainer has sat on him a few times ... But like I said .. I don't like to share :p :p

As for the op .. Just don't offer again .. Simples :)

...tell someone you don't want them to ride your horse anymore!?

Person in question is quite abit younger than me. I've let them have a sit on my horse a few times and a small jump (my god it was terrifying to watch, never again).

Do I need to say something? They're not loaning/sharing him. I guess I feel like I have to since other teens on the yard have ridden (and am happy for them to continue occasionally) him when their horses are off it etc...

Use insurance as a get out. You could be sued if there was an accident so if you are not happy then say no.

Should add I have used this a few times when I have been asked to give lessons, do livery etc. I just say i am not insured so can't do it. I will help people I know and let good riders ride my horse under supervision but it is difficult. Maybe just say you have checked your insurance policy and you can't let them ride.
