Dont ask why but we hogged Mo (bay in sig) a few weeks ago. It had been chewed a lot by her boyfriend and was really messy & uneven, so we just clipped it all off!!! So how do we go about training it to lie flat once it starts to grow? It's a 1cm mohican at the moment!

How long do these things take to grow back?
Also, if i were to attend an unaff. dressage test over the winter, would a mohican be frowned upon?!

Starting to regret it now!
Anybody think hogged manes look good on warmbloods....??

A mane grows at about 1 inch a month. As soon as itgets to the flopping over point, use a water brush to encourage itto lay the correct way. You could also use one of those lycra hoods.

As soon as you can get a band round it, train it over the right way.

I would guess it would take about 6 months to get it back to being plaitable. You would also need to pull or solo comb it to thin it down.

Re-hog it!!!
Two of mine are hogged, one is a cob and one a part bred connemara.Looks good on both.It saves alot of time on a hunting morning!!

My coloured had a hogged mane when she was brought in December, it was plaitable by May. Lycra hoods, wok well and as soon as it is long enough, plait it over for a few days, you will probably need to pull it too to stop it coming through too thick.

Thanks everyone! I wish i could keep her hogged - it would be SO much easier, but i've never seen a hogged warmblood.

Although saying that, it's not like we compete a lot or anything! I'll see what it's like by the time the show season starts up again, then either re-hog or get a hood!

Keep it hogged!

My TB's are usually hogged. They are polocrosse ponies so I started off doing it because it made sense, but now I just can't be arsed with plaiting and pulling, so might lop it all off regardless of whether they play or not!

As long as the topline is there it looks fine

Oh they carry it off so well!! I am actually used to Mo's hog now, but i wasnt sure what judges at shows/dressage would think! Oooh, we might just leave it hogged then! Thank you! x
