How warm are ski jackets compared with riding coats?

My Mountain Horse jacket is finally giving up the ghost. It's had a new zip & I've tried nic-waxing it in the washing machine, but I don't think it's going to do another winter. Riding coats all seem to be ££££, so I was thinking of getting something like this:

Would it be as warm as a good riding coat? Any other suggestions? I really can't face another winter in a leaky coat that's falling apart.

I got a Ski jacket for Christmas last year and it is so warm, kept me lovely and toasty all through the snowy weather!

Hey
I gave in last year and bought a ski coat due to the freezing conditions. I have been nothing but impressed with it! Really warm even in -14 like last winter. Was even brill to ride in. Would recommend one!!

We've been looking for one for D1 as she gets so cold.

Looked in TK Maxx :D. They have quite a few in now. The only thing you have to watch for is if you want it waterproof (taped seams) as well as very warm.

I started riding last tear after a break when I took up skiiing. When I went to get a winter riding jacket I was shocked at how thin, no hood, general quality and price. ended up using an old ski jacket as it as much better. Only problem was it it was pale blue and white, not the greatest when you are a person who attracts mud :D
just bought a new one, Primarni.... £19. its fab, if a bit to warm at the moment.

I rode out in Newmarket for 7 years and only wore ski jackets. The best ones to get, if your soft like me!, are the ones with the extra bit on the sleeve and you can put your thumb through stops your sleeves riding up and stops the draught going up your arms. I cant remember thetechnical name for them!

I wear sallopetes (sp) too they are comfy to ride in too

Well the only reason I did not buy a skiing coat when they were in Aldi's earlier this year is because it wasn't close enough to pay day! It felt beautifully warm and snug and its a marvelous idea.
In fact I am going to have to browse for a skiing coat on ebay too along with a new sofa and pine doors for the house! :D

Ski jackets are much warmer. I have both (as I snowboard and ride) and will change into my ski jacket at some point this winter.

The also good thing for keeping warm is smart-wool (may be one or two words, cant remember) products. They are made for skiing but really keep you warm. Slightly expensive but well worth the money. They do last.

I wear sallopetes (sp) too they are comfy to ride in too

Thats such a good idea. Must try that at some point this winter!

I've not brought a sky jacket but i would recommend a sky suit, they a brilliant for riding in on a cold day. Very warm and surprisingly comfortable to ride in. And much cheaper than riding clothes. I brought mine from Trespass.

This post has given me a great idea!! I bought a ski jacket a couple of years ago. It is similar to a motorcycle jacket and is fitted with back protectors and shoulder and elbow protectors and as I warm up, it moulds to my body........as I don't have a body protector and am a **** skier with no intention of skiing again I could use it for riding this winter!! Thanks everyone!

I ski in a Horsewear Ride 'n' Ski Jacket, but I don't think they do them anymore. It's a hybrid between the two & has a snow skirt & the thumb thingies mentioned above.

One thing I would advise is that riding coats usually have 2 way zips & ski jackets generally don't. I prefer to have a two way for riding.

Only thing with ski trousers is if you have a very spooky horse some can trousers can be a bit noisy. However i ride my spooky standardbred in them and rode yearlings in them

Seems lots of people in favour of Ski jackets.

I've never tried one, but did wear my mountain horse jacket for skiing and was too hot all of the time everywhere but the very top of the mountain.

A bit irrelevant I suppose.

I bought a harry hall winter coat in the sale at a local horsey shop and it only lasted 8 months before the zip went.....I then bought a ski jacket and have had it for over 2 years now and its great....its nice and warm and washes well (as and when required).

I bought it from Decathlon so it may be worth checking them out if you have a store near you as they have their own makes as well so cheaper....based on my experience the horsey winter coats are expensive and not very long lasting.....
