Maybe it is the ranking system that needs overhauling and not the class. You can be jumping some big classes on Grade Cs and none of that counts towards the rankings
I've never really understood why the rankings for this sort of class aren't done by TOTAL rider winnings - across all grades / classes - surely this would weed out the pro's?
Having read everyones views and ideas i agree with dieseldog i think. By going purely on the rankings list it will knock all of the pro's out on their grade A/B horses that are jumping in the big classes. I only have one horse at the 1.20m level but i wouldnt say restricting people to only being able to jump one horse in a class would be good for the class or the sport really. Yes i agree people with more than one horse at that level could be at a slight advantage as getting more than one through in to the jump off takes the pressure off and also give you a practice run however it doesnt mean that they arnt a proper amateur and still deserve to qualify. Also i know how much it gets to me travelling long distance to some of the qualifiers with only one horse on board, its much more cost effective if you have two!
Ive just read the Summerhouse HOYS qualifier report in H & H this week and the coursebuilder summed the class up by saying quote ' This qualifier is always a difficult task, I needed to cater for the strong contingent of professional pairs, but at the same time not kill off the true amateurs'
