that is horrible, poor boy, hope he does start to heal up ok

Do you have a pic of a similar gate latch or link to one? just struggling to think what sort would manage that. I would like to keep an eye out for problematic ones if possible.

That is awful, poor horsey, sending lots of ((((Hugs)))), U done very well in a bad situation.
Hoping for a quick recovery

Oooooh..nasty, poor animal. So sorry for you all to have to experience that. Fingers crossed horse will be OK and the rider and your nerves recover.

Hugs to all involved and vibes for a speedy recovery for the poor horse, that certainly is one hell of an injury. Certainly will make me much more cautious of gates. Like others, in the past I have either only just had my leg and/or stirrup catch on a gate latch, no actual damage done except the odd bruise.

ester - just sent a link to eaglestone who is about to upload pic of scarily similar latch - oh and through talking just realised its the same gate latch that a horse she rides got his stirrup snapped off on - is that right C?

Picture of similar gate latch

TWH .... it was Chaos, when I was riding Punch ..... Chaos caught his stirrup in the upright bit, used to open this latch and snapped the strirrup leather, but thankfully we were all ok, after shortening the stirrup

Off to look for a pic of the upright bit

Here it is ...... horrid horrid horrid handles, combined with the impaling latch = danger and destruction

well done C for finding that pic

hho members - the latch on the offending gate is alot higher so while trying to pull the jamming long handled latch (on your left) and stopping your reins getting wrapped round it and stirrups you've then got the latch itself (on your right) ripping your horse open

awful, poor poor horse, well coped. hope he makes a full recovery.
i HATE those latches. they were on bridleways where i used to live in Staffs, hunting gates on 1 side of narrow wooden bridges, 1 of mine got her reins caught over the top and fought and fought it for about a minute once with me clinging on, until she stopped and i was able to unhook her. terrifying.
fwiw i cut all those types of latch off my gates at home, i won't have them near a horse, they are SO dangerous.

Oh gosh!! That sounds awful!!! Glad you were able to keep a level head!

If it's any help, a horse I knew reared over backwards into a barn door and ripped her back open to the spine. Ripped out a chunk of muscle and chipped bone from the spine. It's been a couple of years, but the vets think she'll be rideable.

They're pretty resilient creatures. But hugs to all involved reguardless!

God that sounds so terrible the poor horse, hopefully will make a full recovery.

Those latches are so dangerous I went to open one got my reins caught by accident my horse pulled back and went up and over and luckly the reins broke else im not sure ehat would have happened. Are they not considered horse safe gates though for bridle ways????

xxxHUGSxxxx

Poor chap - hope he recovers without any infection setting in - looks like he's going to be so sore for a while

There is one like that near us - but on a higher gate - thankfully my lad was not injured, but my half-chaps on that side were torn off and my calf muscle bruised and very swolen for a week!

OH was trying to open one of these gates and as he went up to it the horse got its bit ring over the handle. Luckily he managed to get the ring off without panicking his horse.

OMG - that is awful.

Pales Rosie's stable door wound into insignificance.

Hope the horsey is better soon and you're friend not TOO upset by it

x

Thank you for the pictures of the gate latch.

What a strange device it is. I can honestly say I've never seen anything like it. Most or our bridleways here just just have small horse stiles, next to larger gates for other "traffic" which are padlocked.

I can't imagine trying to open one of those on horseback (although clearly I do appreciate that's what they're intended for).

Massive hugs to the owner and OP and healing vibes for the horse. What a horrific injury to have to tend to out on a hack.

Oh my word!!! That must have been a horrendous experience for you! Not nice at all! Sending lots of (((hugs))) and healing vibes to all those involved! xxxxx

On a more positive note, my horse had a very similar injury and he healed like you wouldn't believe!!!! So try not be too concerned. I appreciate all injuries and horses are different, but I think you will be surprised how quick they heal!

My horse Sammi did it in the end of May 2005 (I think). Our stable doors are on latches, and there was wet in front of my stable, he slipped, fell on the door way and impaled himself on the latches peg where his girth was, he leapt forward and gashed his side open. The hole was bigger then a mans hand.

He had punctured a muscle which was approximately an index finger depth and had gone through an artery. He lost alot of blood and it was touch and go for a while. He had the muscle stitched, inner layers stitched and outer layer of skin stitched. 10 - 14 days later he had his stitches taken out. A few days after this the wound broke open and the vet said it probably happened because the injury was so deep and needed to heal inside out. His body also formed it's own drain to get rid of excess fluid. He healed EXTREMELY fast and well!
grin.gif

By July I was told to start riding him to keep the elasticity in the muscle so the scar tissue didn't really set in and restrict the muscle in later life. I was encouraged to jump him quickly too

as much as I wanted to leave it for several months. The vet and physio said I would damage him more if I waited! Said the scar tissue would be that deep, if I left it for months, when I did jump, it possibly would rip the muscle inside!
shocked.gif

From the encouragement and advice of Sammi's physio, I took him round a novice xc in early September 2005 (approximately 3 months after the accident)!!!!.

I was scared as hell I was going to hurt him, much to my surprise, he flew round without issue or problems! The injury has never affected his ability whatsoever! He just has a small white patch and an indent. On the photos of the injury it looks alot higher up then it is because of the amount of fluid underneath the wound!

Here's the photo's.... nothing too gorey.... but look away if you're squeamish....

Hope the healing process is as fast and goes as well as it did for Sammi xxxxx

Please do report this incident to both the local council and the BHS.

Those latches are installed on gates on bridleways as they are supposed to be "horse friendly" I have had my reservations for sometime, especially when they are accompanied by a gate on a spring. We need to make it clear to all authorities that these latches are not safe and that something better needs to be installed.

Personally I'd prefer a loop over the top of the gate post.

Update. He was happier today and whinnied when he saw me and when I left (only for carrots I realise haha) and owners seems happier as he may even be home this week YIPPPEEE and I have updated pics to add of the gorgeous man himself later. Thanks everyone
smile.gif
Would you all be prepared to sign a petition / campaign if we start one to use "horse-friendly gates"?

Glad to hear he seems brighter today. I had a similar accident many years ago with a gate latch, except it impaled itself in the horse's hindquarters rather than the ribs. Was made worse because as the horse struggled to free itself it pulled the gate more tightly shut and pushed the latch even harder into the flesh.

The wound was just as horrific looking as the one you have posted, but thankfully it actually healed extremely well and left the horse with no side effects bar a funny sweat patch where the nerves had been damaged.

I hope your friend's horse makes a similarly good recovery.

That's truly shocking. So sorry for the horse, you and your friend, can only imagine how terrifying it must have been at the time.

Phew, that was horrible, but at least he's coming home to mend. There are some dodgy gate where I ride, and I've been mocked for getting off to open them. I'm glad I do now. Even if I then have to search about for something to mount up from (I can't do the from the ground thing these days).
I'll send a bit of healing for the lad. If that's not too "fluffy bunny" for HH forum.
