hunters vs hedge hunters?

leading on from another post that starbucks has made got me thinking. if you have people that come for the jumping and people that come for the hunting how do you think the field masters should keep everyone happy?????

a field master that is there to jump 20 jumps in succession isnt always going to be any where near hounds and a field master that wants to watch hounds wont always jump 20 fences. but in my experience its the people that want to watch hounds that pay the subs year in year out.

So how does a field master handle this situation. for me the best jumping is always on the hunt or should i say trail where your adrenaline is running and for me i have to keep within range of the pack and the sound of the hounds hunting as im taking obstacles on is the best rush i can get"!!

So what do you think?
 
We have a field master who will jump anything. When the hounds aren't running he will entertain the field by taking them over hedges etc. I'm sure he would rather be with the hounds though. He does Sats which is more popular anyway but most people come out because he is field mastering.
But we have other field masters that want to be with the hounds and the field have a 'boring' day as they don't get to gallop about jumping.
 
I wouldn't pay to hunt if I didn't get guaranteed jumping. I couldn't give a fig what the hounds do, to be honest, I just want to gallop over fields and jump fences and hedges that I wouldn't be allowed to any other way.
 
I'm probably a hedge hunter - BUT I'm only really interested in jumping stuff if it's in the right direction! Totally does not do anything for trailing round 20 crappy hunt jumps for the sake of it.

I think FM should do what they used to - go where the hounds do and jump anything that's in the way! (obviously within reason and where we are allowed) :p

It's worth having crap jumping days if you get the odd really good one.
 
see for me if i went visiting a hunt I wouldnt care less if i jump a twig aslong as i see hounds work. plus i dont like jumpin unnesesarily(sp) incase i have to jump somehting big towards end of day i like my horse to still have some power in his engine.

im not saying a jumping and non jumping field masters but people who watch hounds wont always jump everything. my gf will regually stop and watch hounds while the field gallop round a field or she will hold my horse while im on foot but on the other hand will jump what she needs to when it comes to it. but you always get the people who are semi sinical about what she does, but as some people on here know she has a fab lil horse and if the hounds are going the jumps are jumped.

Tbf anyone who knows rockwood knows they will be jumping :D
 
I'm the same TBH Joe! i know I don't hold your horse.. but I'd rather not bother with the little jollies just for the sake of it.

I don't know what's wrong with the old style. :p

And Yes you do always get jumping with Rockwood. I think it's to do with the country more than anything.
 
tbh if i have anything to say about the jumping in our country i love how trappy it is and how you have to turn and jump its great :P
 
well why do you not just go to one of these cross country courses and stop wasting the hunts time and effort

Would you please tell me where the cross country course is that has open turf and a succession of five foot hedges, that will allow forty of us to go round at the same time?

And when you have told me about that one, can you find me nineteen others within 75 minutes journey of my home, so that I don't have to do the same course each time?

And then explain to my hunt why I am not paying a subscription and cap that they are increasingly keen to get their hands on?

Ooh, and perhaps you might apologise on my behalf to some of the people who hunt to watch hounds, but can't actually ride very well, that I will not be there to give them a lead over the fences that they are having trouble getting their horses over?

Really?
I assume then that you have not been hunting for a few weeks due to the rain reaching almost Biblical proportions?
I also assume that you are not a farmer or land-owner ?? !!
Please, do correct me if I am incorrect in my assumptions.
By the way, never "the" hounds - always just "hounds" please.
 
Mr Woof I love to see the dogs, I really do, but I wouldn't pay a hunt sub and cap to watch them.

I am a landowner. I have no idea what that has to do with this discussion though.
I am a fairweather hunter. I do not find it enjoyable to have to wring my knickers out at the end of the meet, but there, that's just me, I know I'm odd.

attitudes of folk hunting have disintegrated i'm afraid. there's nothing better than to follow hounds, watch them work, and enjoy a good ride as well- not to go hell for leather over fields and dales, jumping willy nilly!! i don't know, there is a serious dumbing down to hunting these days and its going to be more like the charge of the light brigade before long- with little knowledge of what hunting traditionally is all about!! pity-

No offence meant and I do hope none taken - but for once, you have, actually, said something sensible!
 
salimali I hunted twenty five years ago with the Beaufort and the Berkeley and I can't see the slightest change in hunting then and hunting now as regards going hell for leather across country over some good big walls, hedges or timber.

I have, though, seen a reduction in people who are hunting to be "seen to be hunting by the 'right' people" and an increase in good riders out for the joy of riding.

Mr Woof I would like to hear your answer to Starbucks' question as well.
 
Hunting has changed a lot. But then it has been banned! Don't think we are actually doing too bad!

BTW - me and my family are proper hunting people - I'm just trying to say that not everyone goes just to watch hounds work!

Being a farmer or landowner means that it is YOUR (sorry for "shouting") land which is being carved up in bad weather especially as so many people these days have no idea whatsoever what a headland is! You enjoy your FW Hunting - without landowners such as yourself, there would be very little hunting. A big thank you from those of us who are not.

That's my point though, I'm not an idiot, I've hunted all my life, and although I like to see hounds - that isn't the reason I go. I don't see what is wrong with that?

There is no other reason. If you want to go and have "a jolly" then go and crack round your local xc course. Words fail me.
 
personally i think there is room for both sets of people but thats not what i was asking at all and this is now the same arguement asin the other post :S
 
You can't say words fail you again!!!

I've just said that I'm not interested in razing round for the sake of it.. that is not my thing.

Following hounds in the correct manner can be fun you know! I have been guilty of having a jolly over the odd nice big hedge or wall (normally on my own!) but that's always on good ground.. so doesn't make a mess.

People who don't just go hunting to watch hounds doesn't equal a load of tossers who want to wreck farmers land and piss off hunt staff.

What's the problem in people enjoying it for the ride?
 
Starbuck's pack are my home pack and with them I certainly a hedge hunter because hounds are usually in 17different directions, doing as they please, under the watchful eye of hunt staff who are most unprofessional. Starbucks and I used to love hedge jumping and saddle flasks.
OH's hunt are completely different, its all about the hounds and I'm not overly keen on the jumping because dykes still give me the eeby jeebies and I only jump them because I am being bullied by the others in the field ;)
Anyone going solely for jumping really needs to rethink their options, but of course having a jump around is lovely.

My personal opinion (and we are talking about Rockwood here), is that I would prefer it if they went a bit more old skool. I was a kid back in Bob Mac, Angela days but they were soooo good. Proper hunting!!

I think the Rockwood has changed because they need to, and have no criticism what so ever.. but it is a shame.

I think you put that very well, I used to love being out when our Dad's were both out, but the rockwood was a very different place back then. I'm sure its changed for reasons, but I don't like them, I don't rate the day at all apart from the amazing country we have (and looking at the meet card its shrinking...) and I used to go out for that reason.
My mum said the other day the only good things left in the rockwood are the country, the Bucks and the Martins, I agree.
