Hunting is in a spot of bother

Can someone remind me again why my local hunt can’t be more specific on their whereabouts?. Meet at 10.30am a mile up the road from us. Husband gets a message at 9am - they “might” be coming in our direction. Surely by 9am of the morning meet, they have a plan on where the trail will be laid, or at least in which direction ? 😡

Simply because they dont know where the " trail" will run! That should tell you all you need to know about the farce that is trail hunting. If it were actually trail hunting they would know exactly where they were going would they not?????

*whispers*.

They can if they’re trail hunting.

They can’t if they’re fox hunting.

Simples

I've asked our local hunts this many times!! They can never answer. We hear on the grapevine later how many foxes they have got. I still can't understand why they haven't been caught out yet!

Little update. Not only have they just been to our area - the hounds have ran rampage through our back field onto the stable yard and across our north field. No access to the hunt horses to get in from that side so the huntsman are in a neighbours field trying to get them back - but those hounds were on cry to something and I’ve been following them around our property videoing for 20minutes before they went back to the hunt. I am furious. Horses are beside themselves. How do hunts get away from the “out of control dogs” law !

It’s definitely worth phoning it in to the police on the non urgent line, is it 101?

If your local police are on the ball they can use it to help build up a picture of an out of control trespassing hunt causing a nuisance.

I found the on line reporting too clunky but others have successfully got an incident number for similar when phoning in.

Thanks TP, I was just going to ask if there was anything I can do to make them accountable.

Had them round our way again today too. Another day of hypervigilant, upset horses sh1tting through the eye of a needle all afternoon and charging around the turnout as hounds pass behind in the woods on the North side in full cry, while huntsmen canter all the way down the road on the South side. Our property is very long and narrow (500m x 25m, I know, crazy!) so they basically split and come both sides.

Even the pro hunters seem to have given up on trying to defend it now. The **** show going on with Warwickshire police and the "Secret deal" they had with Warwickshire hunt is a on going disgrace.

What other organisation would have the option of a hours notice that police would attend?

Any complaints made to the Police were allegedly sent to hunting's governing body rather than being delt with by the Police.
No wonder the Warwickshire thought they were above the law. They clearly were.

TBF no pro hunter has ever tried to defend things like this. Palo who is a very staunch defender of hunting has been very clear that this sort of thing is not something she participates in or condones.

Its a shame the hunts obeying the law haven't come out to condem this sort of thing. Sadly for them the lack of action is going to mean the death of hunting for them and the law breakers.

I'm not far from there and Thames Valley Police are throwing considerable resources at hare coursers so the same should be done here if that's what happened. But is it definitely a hare? How on earth does a beagle catch a hare? My similar sized but hugely faster whippet would have his work cut out catching up with a hare so I just cant imagine a beagle being able to?

that's what beagle packs were for.... Before the ban and after the ban they swapped to hunting "rabbits".

Eta. The member of public went over to see what they had killed and found the hare still warm, there are photos in thr article.

Ex-Huntsman Sam Staniland Convicted of Animal Cruelty

26 February 2025

Today, Sam Staniland, the former huntsman of the Essex & Suffolk Hunt, appeared at Ipswich Magistrates’ Court facing six charges related to animal cruelty, including allowing dogs to fight with badgers and foxes.

The case was brought by the RSPCA and Suffolk Police Rural Crime Team, following evidence discovered when police seized Staniland’s phone during an investigation into a separate fox hunting incident. This evidence led to an RSPCA raid on the kennels in January 2023. The offences occurred between 2020 and 2023 in Hadleigh and St Osyth in Essex.

As a result of the raid, six men were arrested and 22 terriers were seized. The investigation implicated huntsmen from three different hunts, including Staniland, who had previously been convicted of illegal hunting while serving as huntsman for the now-defunct Meynell & South Staffs Hunt. Following these revelations, the British Hound Sports Association (BHSA) suspended Staniland and others, leading to them being sacked by their respective hunts.

Charges Against Staniland

- Causing unnecessary suffering to a foxhound by failing to prevent it from fighting a fox (17th October 2022).

-Causing animal fighting to take place (17th October 2022).

- Failing to protect a female Patterdale terrier from suffering between 6th and 21st April 2023. The terrier had injuries to her skin, muzzle, and nose.

- Failing to prevent three Patterdale terriers from fighting foxes and badgers between 21st March and 23rd April 2023.

- Failing to prevent dogs from fighting a badger (11th February 2021).

- Failing to prevent two black lurcher dogs from fighting a badger (17th October 2022).

Convictions and Outcome

Staniland pleaded guilty to three charges, while the remaining charges were dismissed. He was found guilty of:

- Failing to meet the welfare needs of three Patterdale terriers – Scandal, Vice, and Roxy – by allowing them to fight badgers and foxes (21st March – 21st April 2023).

- Causing suffering to a foxhound by failing to prevent it from fighting a fox (17th October 2022).

- Causing suffering to a second foxhound under the same circumstances (17th October 2022).

- Failing to ensure the welfare needs of two lurcher-type dogs, allowing them to fight a badger (17th October 2022).

The prosecution did not proceed with the remaining charges, leading to their dismissal.

Staniland left the court with a smirk, holding a Bag for Life he had filled with his belongings, in case he was remanded in custody.
He is due to be sentenced at Norwich Magistrates’ Court on 10th April 2025, with all sentencing options still under consideration.

The new huntsman of the Essex & Suffolk Hunt, John Henty, and former Whipper-in Jamie Price, are both due in court 11th March 2025 for a Section 1 Hunting Offence from footage captured by Suffolk Action For Wildlife.

A most interesting development. Don’t recall hearing of similar before.

Three men have been summoned to court to face animal welfare charges.

Following an investigation by Cheshire Police' Rural Crime Team, the Crown Prosecution Service has authorised for Peter Jones, 66, of Birds Lane, Bunbury, John Simpson, 61, of Huxley Lane, Chester, and David Woolley, 67, of Hatton Hall Lane, Chester, to be charged with duty of person responsible for animal to ensure welfare - Animal Welfare Act 2006.

The charges relate to an incident which occurred on Saturday 9 November 2024, in the Haughton area of Tarporley, that involved concerns over animal welfare.

The men are due to stand trial at Chester Magistrates’ Court on Monday 8 September.

Also reported in local rag.

I’ve posted before how pro active the Cheshire Police Rural Crime Team are. This is not a charge re illegal hunting, it’s to do with the care of hounds.

The three individuals facing trial are all current or recent directors of the Cheshire Hounds. Hounds were seen by police milling apparently unattended by any representative of the hunt on a public road, something that happens very regularly throughout the season every year, whether antis are present or not. I’ve lost count of all the lost hounds on the roads that I’ve flagged down traffic for over the years.

It’s not safe for the hounds or for the public. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out.

This does seem fair enough. They can hardly argue hounds are under control when there's no one present.

That's astonishing! He's even served time for it. How can a man with a conviction like that be given the lead role in any public activity, never mind one where such a huge proportion of the field are women?
