I have done alot of research on both these breeds, and have found it hard to decide between the two, so I was hoping you guys could help if I describe the kind of lifestyle i would give it.

So, I mainly work from home and the only hour or two that I leave is to either go to the stables or the gym. I would be able to woalk it, at least twice a day, we have great places to go for good long walks, so exercise should not be a problem. I understand these kind of breeds are best not off the lead, I don't have a problem with that, but have read that something like a lunge line is acceptable to walk them in.

I would definetely do dog training classes and also if i could would love to join in with the husky/malumute societies so we could learn how to race etc.

I have previously owned a lovely GSDxHusky who was interesting to say the least, but he is sorely missed and the house although clean again has no personality in it.

I think i would prefer a puppy to start from scratch with but I am not familiar with who the good breeders are etc

Any info would be much appreciated.

Thank you

OP, don't do it, you have to be mental to own either!:eek::eek:

...if you are mental, husky all the way. :D As regards walks you will soon acquire a full arsenal of lunge lines in different materials and lengths, bungee lines, harnesses, walky belts, backpacks and bike attachments.

In my limited experience a husky is everybody's friend (not always a good thing) and malamutes tend to be more aloof, though I'm sure Cyrus will illustrate the differences a lot better than that. :)

lol lol

I gave plus and minus points of both the breeds especially the ones that will factor in the OPs life

I believe the OP will now be going to both breed clubs show/fun days with in the next month to get some up close and personal time before making her final desison

:D

Haha you sound more and more like a sibe owner everytime you post :D

I`m still giving you a year or two and you`ll introduce number 2 :p

What, slightly more unhinged every time? :p

I'd have another one in a heartbeat.... when I win the lottery and can erect a 12ft fence around a few acres for them to hoon about on. ;)

Bought madam a new waist belt and bungee for jogging/pulling me up mountains today to add to the 25ft long line, 50ft long line, 1m lead, padded training harness, Walkydog and Halti headcollar. CC will be glad to hear that the flexi lead has given up the ghost and been binned, it couldn't stand up to an adolescent sibe. OP, you have been warned. :p

BC you do sound like you are slowly loosing it ;)

Have decided to go to some fun shows to get a good idea of what the breeds are like, and then take it from there. Cyrus thank you for your *very* helpful advice.

I will be back soon, maybe with photos :)

OP Well done for doing your research BTW sadly far too many don't!! Yes you are all mad, personally like kids I like to give them back to their owners and go home to my Auzzies!!!

Cyrus, perhaps you could be a founder of the "sled dog try before you buy club", give someone a really cute sled dog or better still 2 for the day and if they can stand them wrecking the house, digging gigantic holes and eating the plants in the garden before escaping the 6' "Sturdy" garden fences and pulling them down the street on their belly to get the paper, then they get one if not you've saved another from rescue!

Mals!! Mine is the cuddliest and gentlest friend I could ask for. We went for a Mal over the Hasky as they tend to be thicker set- which is what we wanted, ours is super off the lead- but as is often the case she is same sex aggresive- fine with boys- hates girls- but we are working on it. She never howls or makes noise but has enough hair to make a new carpet- daily! Ive only known one Husky properly and he was as crazy as a spangle- but bigger and hairier! But Im no pro on these dogs- and might just have been lucky with Tass- but she is the best!

I met a MAHOOSIVE Malamute on a hike at the weekend and wished I had been walking with him and not the ever-so-polite lab who point blank refused to pull me uphill :p
He had such a heavy coat and his owner was in his 70s and was using two leads - but it was nice to see him in his element in the wilderness!

That about sums it up, except with spangles you can generally let them off the lead to burn some excess energy. With huskies you're always being dragged 25ft behind the crazy. :p

RIP flexi-lead, we hardly knew thee. What a tragedy your ratchet wotsit couldn't cope with the constant back and forth of an adolescent furry maniac.

not a fan of dog sledding..

as I tried it on holiday. Not the lovely romantic scene I had pictured when signing up. Blooming hard work (I was the sled runner to start) over fresh snow. Lost the sled and my friend twice when falling over. Only consolation was that my friend (lying tucked up in the sled) had to deal with the constant flow of dog poo as they "just keep going" !!

Its the greatest fun ever and the most amazing feeling moving through a quiet forest in the early mornings with the only noise that of your dogs breathing, watching their ears flicking back and forwards listening to their surroundings waiting for your next command theres nothing like it

my Sibe is a total loon (nought odd there then) id love to sled but she would get on & wait for me to pull the damned thing.

mind you she is great for getting SWA up the ramp, give her the end of his rope & tell her up, she is way stronger than him & more bloody minded i just wait at the front for them to arrive & tie him up.
