I have to go home for a couple of hours to be in for a delivery. My horse has to stay in for the duration. I've overslept, and my mare has had an unsettled night so the stable's a disgrace, so what is my priority?

Does my mare stand in her own muck for a further hour or so, but has clean water and fresh hay, or does she get fed and her stable tidied up a bit and make do with six of inches of hay strewn water and the remains of last night's haynet?

I believe that fresh forage and water come higher on the list of priorities than sorting out a dirty stable, (though obviously I wouldn't want my mare standing in wet and dirty straw for any longer than she had to), but some people disagree!

Luckily the above scenario is made up, but it conceivably could happen, so what do you think?

Only my opinion but def. fresh hay and water...... bed can be tided up a little later..... it won't hurt her she's stood in it all night!

Standing for an extra hour or two on a dirty bed is not good for feet, but in itself won't make too much difference.

Leaving the horse without forage and fresh water will make the horse uncomfortable, stressed and possibly dehydrated.

So, hay and water more of a priority. That and a new alarm clock.

Hay and water are the priority, as others have said.

The (presumably not hypothetical) people who are criticising should be offered the opportunity to muck out the stable if it upsets them that much!

...That and a new alarm clock.

Touche!

What got me thinking, and raising discussion at work and now here, is I actually really overslept this morning. I woke up at 8.20am. I work a 40 minute drive away, and have to be there for 9.30am and I needed petrol, (dead organised, me!) with a hungry horse stuck in the middle.

Instead of my usual panic (thus transferring nerves on to horse, inviting naughty, time wasting behaviour) I phoned work and explained the problem, fed and turned out horse, bought petrol and arrived at work just 10 minutes late - I swear everything slotted into place simply because I took the pressure off myself by phoning work!
